last night i sat with you
on the sandy shoreline
and watched,
as lightning bugs traced lazy constellations
through the jet-black midnight clouds

i sat, and i smiled
while a million and one dragonflies
erupted into puffs of blue and white
and spilled, like ashes
upon the seaside floor,
while waves
of every shape and size
tumbled around you as you lay sleeping,
your eyes drawn closed to the night.
