"Alright boys. Ready?" He asked settling into the drivers seat. They all nodded and Gino, who sat next to him, loaded his gun.
"What's the deal boss?" Nick asked.
"We need to talk to Mario, find out who else talked to the cops." He told them tightening his grip on the steering wheel.
"What if he doesn't know nothing?" Tony asked.
"He knows something." Gino said. "And we'll find out what." He said fingering his gun lovingly.
"I don't want no one doing anything rash alright!" Frank said looking in the rear view. "We gotta cover our tracks on this one. No mob signs, no rituals. We make it look like murder."
"I always liked Mario. Wish we didn't hafta kill him." Tony said. "He was the one who swore me in you know."
"That's the life we live. He betrayed the Family Antonio." Gino said kindly. "He has to pay."
"Speaking of paying. How much you dish out on that slut before you got her into bed huh?" Nick asked leaning forward in the back seat and placing his hand on Frankie's shoulder. He shoved Nick's hand off of him.
"She wasn't no slut!" He yelled. "You got that? She was a good girl. Nothing happened." He said and Nick held his hands up.
"Sorry man." He said. "Didn't think she was important."
"Well she is. I'm gonna see her again. You show her the same respect you'd show yuh motha" He said sharply.
"Sorry." Nick said looking like a beaten dog. "Didn't know."
"Do you think it is ok to call him today?" Crysta asked. She was sprawled out on her couch, her friend in the chair neck to her, staring at "Frankie A. Marullo's" number.
"I say wait a little bit. Men like that like the chase." She said. "Did he really take you to La Bella Luna?" She asked.
"Oh my Lord yes. It was beautiful Jesse, just beautiful." She said with a deep sigh. She shut her eyes and thought about her date. "He was so sweet, he paid, he held doors open for me, he lent me his coat, he pulled out chairs…"
"All this and he didn't lay a hand on you? I don't buy it. He sounds to good to be true." She said and Crysta leaned forward slightly.
"Well. There is one thing…" She said.
"You promise you wont be mad?"
"No tell me." She said and Crysta winced.
"There's a possibility he is in the Italian Mafia-."
"What!" She yelled. "Crysta!"
"He never came out and said it!" She explained. "He just never denied it either."
"You aren't seriously thinking of going back out with him?" She snapped.
"Well, he was so sweet-"
"Crysta I know you had that little obsession with Mobsters, but I mean come on. This isn't Tony Soprano, or the Godfather. This is real life. They are murderers." She said. Crysta frowned and looked down. She was going to tell her about the incident with the detective but stopped herself.
"I guess your right." She said softly.
"I am." Jesse glanced at the clock. "Look, I'm late ok. I've got to go, but I will talk to you later. Look Crysta I know he was nice, but for real. Throw out that number." She said. "It will only end badly. Trust me."
Crysta nodded and shut the door behind her. She stared at the number and went over to the garbage can and went to throw it out but could drop it in. She looked over her shoulder, and placed it in her pocket.
Frankie walked up the steps to the large lake house and knocked on the door loudly. It opened and Mario stood there with a large smile on his face, obviously not expecting anything. "Frankie my boy." Said the older man. "Come in, come in, all of you." He said warmly, and led them into his living room. "What can I do for you."
"We want to ask you a few questions Mario. Wont last to long." Nick told him sitting down.
"We need to talk about the bank Job." Gino added.
"That you botched." Tony said.
"And got yourself arrested." Nick put in.
"And walked." Frankie said slowly and it donned on Mario. His skin went pale, and his pupils dilated.
"You don't think, that I-"
"Oh we do." Frankie said. "And we need to know, who else in your crew talked."
"You're going to kill me." He said softly looked at them all in the eyes. Tony looked away and to the side, but said nothing.
"Sorry, Mario. But you'd do the same. You killed your brother in law remember?" He asked. "Now, we can do this two ways. You tell us who the others were, and we give you an honorable bullet to the head. Fast and clean, or you don't."
"And if I don't?" Mario asked, knowing the answer.
"Then we carve it out of your skin." Gino said pulled out a long dagger, from inside his coat.
Mario nodded and looked at them, before spitting crudely on Frankie's shoes.
"Go fuck your mother." He said and Frankie back handed him across the face. He placed three more punches to his temple before he was pulled off.
"We cant kill him Frankie Boy, not yet, calm down." Tony whispered in his ear. Frankie nodded and was released. Mario was lying on the floor, holding his head moaning, and Frankie straightened himself out.
"Get a chair, and the rope. Tie him up." He said and his orders were followed out. Nick went into the kitchen and grabbed a chair from the table while Gino pulled out the rope he brought with him. Tony lifted Mario up and held him to the chair while the others tied. "Give me the knife." He said and held out his hand. A jagged hunting knife was placed in his hand and he sliced the slide of Mario's cheek open.
"We just need the names Uncle Mario." Tony said. "Please don't make us hurt you like this."
"I'm not going to just lay down and let you punks kill me. I was in the game before you little shits were even ideas!" He spat. "You wanna get the information, you gotta do the leg work. Like in the old days." He said and Frankie punched him in the face again.
"What should I take off first then?" Frankie asked. "Gino?"
"I say we cut off his thumb. A little motivation." Frankie moved the knife towards his thumb, but Mario stayed silent. Fear was evident in his eyes, but nothing was said. Frankie cut cleanly threw the bone and tossed the thumb into a plastic bag. He didn't want to leave any evidence or finger prints behind. The other three all had on leather gloves.
"Uh oh Frankie. That's bleeding pretty bad." He said over Mario's crying.
"you're right, I'd better stop it." He said and went for the ass tray. He pressed it into the bloody stump and Mario cried out in pain. "Get me a match." He called to Tony and he brought him a lighter instead.
"All I could find." He said but Frankie didn't care. He held the bloody stump over the flame, melting the skin together and stopped the bleeding.
"Want to tell us those names now Mario?" He asked and Mario looked at him, his eyes on fire. "Guess not." Frankie murmured. "Another finger?" He asked and got a vicious shake of the head. "No? Then talk." A wad of spit and flem landed on his face and he bristled, wiping away the spit. He grabbed his hand and cut off his middle and pointer finger. Mario screamed in pain as Frankie held the flame over it.
"Careful Frankie Boy. We don't want him to pass out on us." Nick cautioned. Frankie took a step back and wiped his bloody hands on his pants.
"Talk to us Mario and it will all stop."
"No." He cried and Frankie frowned. He leaned down to cut another finger off when his phone rang. He pulled it out, much to everyone's shock and picked it up.
"Frankie did you just pick your phone up during a-"
"Shut up!" He yelled at him. "Everyone quiet!" At first everyone thought it was the Godfather and so stayed deathly silent. His next words shocked them. "I had a good time last night too." He said smiling like an idiot.
"Frankie!" Gino yelled and Frankie looked up.
"What! I'm talking to my girl here." He said and on the other side of the phone Crysta blushed deeply.
"I can call back." She murmured and he smiled.
"Call me back tonight, around five?" He said. "Ok, baby, bye." He hung up, his phone now covered in blood.
"You are unbelievable." Tony laughed as Frankie turned serious again.
"Just tell us Mario. It kills me to have to do this." He said. Frankie sliced through his clothes when he said nothing, and stripped his clothes off. Leaving him naked. He carved into his chest, and drops of blood ran down his skin. "I can make it stop." He said and dragged the knife, still embedded in his skin down over his nipple and to his belly button.
Mario's black charred stubs throbbed with incredible pain and the searing pain in his chest would not cease. He cried loudly now, but still did not want to give in, he would give in to his wounds soon, and not tell them anything. He felt a hand on his member and gasped. "Fine, lets see how you do with out this." The cool steel was placed against his skin and he panicked.
"No!" He cried.
"No?" Frankie asked.
"Just give me the names Mario." he said and He broke.
"Eddy." He cried. "Eddy, Dino, Mick, and Johnny." He cried.
"Just them?" He asked and pressed the knife harder into his skin.
"Just them!" He cried. Tony raised his arms and squeezed the trigger releasing three bullets into his head. He slumped over, dead and silence filled the room.
"Untie him." Frankie said numbly. Gino cut through the rope and pulled it together. "No one touched anything correct? Not before they had the gloves on."
"We all put the gloves on in the car." he said. He collected the back of fingers and through it in the fire place, burning away any fingerprints with it.
"no one left anything behind?" He asked again. He was worried for them, they were his soldiers after all, and he had to look out for them, just as they would him.
"Nothing sir." They scanned the house and left nothing.
"Let's cut out his tongue." Gino said before they left.
"Dad said no rituals." he said. "They'd link him to the Family." He said softly. Gino nodded and looked back at the body.
"Bye Uncle Mario." They all said and left the house.
Frankie, Gino, Nick and Tony drove down to an abandoned car lot and got out. Frankie pulled the keys out of the ignition and through them into the forest. Gino had opened the trunk and was pulling the bleach bottles from the back and handing them to Nick and Tony. They doused the car, the seats, the steering wheel, dash board. If anyone saw them drive up in that car, they'd never be able to prove they were in that car.
"Where's the other car?" Gino asked.
"Around the other side." Frankie said. "Vincent drove it up with Danny last night."
"We got the car pretty good." Tony said stepping back.
"Get the door handles?" Frankie asked knowingly and Tony stared at him a moment.
"No." Tony said and went for the handle.
"Dumb ass." Nick said under his breath, humor apparent in his voice.
"I was gonna get it ok!" Tony yelled. Gino walked over to Frankie and poured some over his hands and tossed him a cloth. He wiped it off, his hands clean and changed his clothes with a bag they brought. He changed into jeans and a white shirt.
"Burn the clothes." Nick said and they tossed them on the ground, along with the cloth and used the lighter from Mario's to light them. After it was burned through they stamped out the remains and covered and separated it.
When they were confident they covered their tracks they got into the new car. Once they were on the road Frankie pulled out his phone and went through his received calls.
"Alright everyone keep your mouth shut." He said and placed the phone to his ear.
"It's Frankie," He said and smiled.
"Hi." She said shyly. "I'm sorry for disturbing you earlier."
"Oh not at all. I was just with my friends." He said.
"Oh, I see. I was worried I called to soon." She blushed.
"No, no not at all. I would like to see you again." He said and heard her giggle. The others made kissing faces at him and he scowled, hitting Gino in the chest with his fist.
"I would like to see you too." She said un sure what to say.
"Can I come over today?" He asked.
"Yeah, yes, of course." She said. "I'd like that."
"When can I come over?" He asked.
"Um…two hours?" She asked.
"Sounds good. I will be there." He said.
"Great! I mean, good. Awesome." She said rambling. "I'll be waiting."
"Ok I will talk to you later. Bye." He said and hung up. "I am going to kill you guys." He said.
"Oh come on. What's so great about her." Tony asked.
"I don't know. I like her." He said.
"You didn't tell her nothing right." Gino asked.
"She suspects, but I didn't deny nor confirm." He told them.
"Well as long as she don't know nothing I don't care what you do with her." Nick said.
Frankie showed up at Crysta's a few hours later. He wore plain jeans and a casual button up shirt. When she opened the door her cheeks were flushed pink and she looked surprised.
"Hello Beautiful." He said and showed her the roses he had gotten her. Her mouth opened slightly in surprise and she took hold of the roses.
"They are beautiful Frankie!" She said and stepped aside so he could step inside. He followed her into the kitchen where she put the roses in a vase and water. She walked over to him to speak but his arm wrapped around her waist and pulled her against him. His mouth lowered down on hers and she gasped. He slipped his tongue into her mouth and deepened the kiss. His hands fell to her bottom with he squeezed. She squeaked but wrapped her arms around his neck.
He pushed her harder into him and picked her up. She wrapped her legs around his waist and kissed him back, not noticing where he was bringing her. He brought her into the living room and tossed her down on the couch. He came down on top of her and she giggled, running her hands through his hair. He placed tender kisses on her neck. Her hands trailed over his back softly and he didn't think anything of it as he continued to kiss her.
Her hands got to his belt and she innocently moved her hands around to feel his body and she came in contact with a foreign object. She felt the strange object a moment before it clicked what it was.
"Why do you have a gun?" She asked and he pulled back. He stared at her a moment before getting off of her and standing.
"I'm sorry?" He asked placing his hand behind him on the gun, pushing it farther between his belt and himself.
"You have a gun." She said slightly scared. "Why do you have a gun?" She asked.
"It's a…it's not important darling." He said and she put her hand up.
"No, why do you have a gun?" She asked standing up and watched his hesitation. "Oh my God you are in the Mob!" She cried and he wasn't sure how to react. He hadn't planned on jumping on her like that, but she was so perfect he couldn't help it. Now she found his gun, which he was going to leave at home, but he for some reason had this feeling to bring it.
"Don't be silly." He said. "it's for protection, that's all." Not a lie…technically.
"I'm dating a member of the Mafia." She said and placed a hand over her forehead. "Not that my family would care actually." She scrunched her forehead together and Frankie kept back a laugh. "Since you're Italian."
"That's always good." He said. She kept a coffee table between them and he raised his hands. "I'm not gonna hurt you Crysta."
"But…you're a murderer."
"Just because I'm Italian doesn't mean I'm a murderer." He said, his voice low.
"I never said that! You're in the mob!" She cried. He walked around the other side of the table and collected her shaking body in his arms.
"As long as you don't talk to the cops, nothing will happen to you." He said and kissed the top of her head. "I like you."
"So you are in the mob?" She asked and looked up at him. He didn't say anything. "Please, I just want you to be honest with me." He nodded his head slowly and she closed her eyes and looked down.
"Oh Good Lord." She whispered.
"It's ok doll face." He said. "Will you still have me?" He asked. She looked at him and nodded slowly.
"My friend would kill me if she finds out."
"No one can find out." he said sharply. "I mean people know, but people don't go talking about it."
"What type of things do your Family do?" She asked and he touched her face.
"Can't talk about that stuff baby." He said and sat down on the couch with her. "Let's just go back to normal ok." He said and she placed a hand on his chest.
"I shouldn't. I should kick you out right now and never look back." She said and looked up at him. "But I like you too much." She said, and he leaned down and pressed his lips to hers.
"You're getting pretty serious about this girl aren't you?" Gino asked, sitting in the bar.
"I guess so." Frankie said and lit his cigar.
"Does she know." Nick asked leaning closer. "She has to expect."
"What, know, or expect?" Tony said leaning forward.
"Expect." Frankie said, lying. "She found my gun the other day."
"What!" They all said together.
"Don't worry, she didn't ask many questions. She knows when to keep her mouth shut." Frankie said.
"You get her into bed yet?" Tony asked, sitting on the bar stool, leaning backward onto the bar.
"Is that any of your business?" Frankie asked annoyed.
"She met your mother yet?" Tony.
"Does she want to." Nick.
"Do you want her too?" Gino.
"Why haven't you?" Tony.
"God dammit you guys!" He yelled.
"We wanna know Frankie!" Tony cried.
"She is coming over for dinner on Friday." He said.
"You are bringing her to your birthday dinner! Oh poor girl. She doesn't know what you are about to throw her into." Tony laughed.
"You are going to warn her right?" Gino asked.
"She has an Italian family." He said, and the others nodded. Frankie had a bored expression on his face, and he wasn't sure what to do with himself.
"I'd like to meet her." Tony said.
"She isn't coming anywhere near you." Frankie said. "You don't know how to keep your mouth shut yet."
"I aint no snitch!" he yelled getting defensive.
"And I didn't call you one did I!" He yelled. "You let things slip though, to non-cops." He said. "I never called you no snitch." Tony was the baby of Frankie's crew. He was older than Nick and Gino at thirty five, but the others had mobster fathers. Tony had never been apart of organized crime before he met Marcello. He started off an associate, but his Italian blood and his keen mind got him to the status of soldier, where he was placed under Frankie.
"Come one, I want to meet her too." Gino said. "Invite her to dinner with us tonight." Frankie said nothing, but took a sip of his beer.
"I don't know." Frankie said.
"Come on." Tony said. "Who can you introduce her to if not your brothers." He said and held his hands out. Frankie smiled at him
"I suppose." He said.
"Call her." Tony said pulling out his phone and placing it to his hands. Frankie scowled but called her. They had been seeing each other for about three weeks now. Seeing each other every night, and she hadn't asked many questions about his role in the Mafia. He'd bring her out for expensive dinners, take her shopping, buy her nice jewelry. He wanted to move her into a nicer apartment, maybe even buy her a house, but she refused.
It took him long enough to convince her to accept his gifts. He took to leaving them at her house, and buying them for her without her consent, but eventually she accepted them, but always told him she felt bad afterward.
"I don't want you to think I'm using you." She'd tell him running her fingers through his black hair. "Don't spend so much money on me." She said and he smiled.
"But I want to." He would tell her, burying his face in his neck.
"I wont sleep with you." She told him.
"That's not what I want." He'd tell her. If he wasn't with her so much, she would think he was being unfaithful. He came back to reality when he heard her voice.
"Hello?" She asked. "Whose this?"
"It's me." He said.
"Whose phone is that?" She asked. "Where are you calling from?"
"Tony's phone. Hey, do you wanna go out to eat with me tonight?" He asked and Tony and Nick exchanged glances. "I'd like you to meet some friends of mine." He said and heard her hesitation.
"What did I say about cell phones." He snapped.
"Oh, sorry," She said softly. "Are they in your Family?" She asked, phrasing her questions the way he had told her.
"They are." he said and looked over at Gino.
"I don't know…"
"It will be ok Crysta, I'll be with you. Nothing will happened to you." He said and Tony rolled his eyes.
"I'll come get you." He said. "Eight?" He said and looked at the boys, who all nodded.
"Sounds good." She said. "I'll see you then?"
"Sure thing Doll. Buh-bye." He said and hung up the phone.
"Frankie when are we gonna take care of those snitches?" He asked.
"Next week. I got it all planned out." He said. "We are taking out Johnny first." They all fell silent.
"My nephew got a baseball game next week." Tony said. "When we making the hit?"
"When's his game."
"Tuesday." Tony said but it came out, "tues-dee."
"Wednesday then." He said. "We bring him up to the gorge." The others nodded.
"You look beautiful." He said with a warm smiled, holding his hand out for her.
"This is ok?" She asked softly and he pulled her against him roughly.
"Perfect." He whispered and kissed her mouth roughly, right in the hallway of her apartment. A searing kiss was cut short when Frankie felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned to see Jacob Johnson standing behind him, with another detective and three cops. "Can I help you? I am on a date." He said wrapping an arm around her waist possessively. Crysta looked at the cops nervously, and leaned closer to Frankie.
"Pretty brave, hanging around the scene of the crime still."
"I believe the crime scene was a floor up." Frankie said coldly.
"I know you did it, Frank." He said stepping up closer to him. "You suckered that kid into murdering Joseph Ragetti, and then you killed that boy in the stairwell. I know you did it." He said again and Crysta looked up at Frankie's cold face, frightened. Her stomach dropped into her feet when he took a step closer to the cop and stared at him, before whispering coldly.
"Prove it." He gripped Crysta's waist tighter and she avoided the detective's gaze. "So tell me, what's with the cops. Going to arrest me?" He asked, holding up his wrists.
"We found Mario Cantilatto. Did you cut his fingers off or did you have one of your soldiers do it?" He asked. Frankie heard Crysta's intake of breath and began to worry now. Not for his freedom, he knew they had no evidence of him, but he knew Crysta was still shaky about his mob connections, he didn't want Jacob to scare her away.
"Is this anything to be talking about in front of a lady?" He asked. "We will be going." He said but Jacob stood in his way.
"We cant put you at the cabin, but we will. You don't have a lot of time you know. You'll mess up soon, and I'll be there when you do." He spat. He looked down at Crysta and saw her frightened features and his eyes softened. "If I were you, miss, I'd get rid of this guy, he will bring you nothing but trouble.-" Frankie grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and the cops moved to pull him off. Crysta got there first and got in between Frankie and the cop and he released him.
"Frankie, calm down." She whispered and touched his face.
"If that's all." Frankie said and grabbed onto Crysta's hand, pulling her passed them. He got her into the car and said nothing, speeding through the streets, his knuckles were white on the steering wheel.
"Frankie." She asked, looking at him slightly differently now. Her stomach turned at the thought of what, 'cutting off fingers' entailed. Did he torture someone?
"Don't you listen to them." he said roughly. "Don't you listen to a word. I'm a good man." He barked.
"I never said you weren't Frankie." She whispered. "Did you do it Frankie? Did you kill Joey?"
"No." He snapped. "I didn't."
"But that boy-"
"I didn't kill nobody!" He snapped. He stopped the car outside of the restaurant and turned to look at her. "Do you believe me?" He asked, taking her face in his hands. She hesitated, but nodded. "I didn't do nothing wrong." He said. "Nothing."
"Ok Frankie." She said and placed her smaller hands over his. "I believe you."
"Good." He said and got out of the car, opening her door. "You'll like my friends." he said, smiling now. His grip on her changed since the run in with the police. He was tighter with her now, wouldn't let her get to far, and kept a possessive arm around her. He walked into the restaurant walking passes the greeter and seater and walked into a back room.
Smoke filled the room and a few men sat around a table playing cards, with cigars in their mouths. They looked up when they walked in and stood.
"So this is the lovely lady." Tony said and grabbed her hands, bring them to his lips. "just as beautiful as he has said." Crysta blushed deeply and looked up at Frankie who smiled proudly, his hand still on her hip.
"nice to meet you." She said softly and Gino took her hand and kissed it, nick only shook it.
"Don't mind these guys." He said bringing her over to the table.
"How'd you get such a beautiful lady Frankie boy." Tony asked. "I think she is more suited for someone like me." He said flirtatiously and sat down next to Crysta. She giggled with a blush and Frankie kept a blank face on. "What do you do beautiful?"
"I still go to school." She said.
"Majoring in History." Frankie said and reached for some food that was on the table, and made Crysta a plate.
"Very good." Gino said. "Are you specializing in anything?" He asked.
"Roman Empire." She said and blushed. Frankie placed a strand of her hair behind her ear.
Half way through the dinner Crysta decided she liked them, Tony being her favorite. Frankie was still tense and Crysta couldn't bring herself to calm him down. She was afraid of him at the moment. Suddenly he turned to her. "Crysta, can you step outside for a moment?" he asked.
"What?" She asked confused and the others looked at each other.
"I need to talk to them."
"About what happened?" She asked and the others looked at her surprised. What did she know exactly?
"It's not your concern darling." he said.
"I don't want to stand out there alone. Can I please stay here. Please?" She asked and Frankie looked at the others who shrugged.
"Never mind. I will talk to them later." He said and Crysta looked down.
"You don't trust me." She whispered.
"You have no reason to not talk." He said.
"About the man whose fingers you cut off." She snapped and the others looked at Frankie, waiting for his reaction. He looked at her sharply and raised a finger.
"Not another word." He said.
"Or about the boy you killed."
"That cop didn't know what he was talking about ok. I didn't do nothing." he said getting angry.
"I just want you to be honest." She told him gripping his hands. "I know you don't all sit around here singing kumbiya and holding hands!" She cried.
"If you don't shut your mouth." he warned.
"You'll what?" She snapped. Suddenly he backhanded her across the face to everyone's shock. Crysta held her red cheek in shock. Tears pricked from her eyes and she grabbed her bag and ran from the room.
"Frankie-" Tony said and Frankie sighed loudly, hit the table and stood chasing after her. She was on the road when he found her trying to get a cab. Her eyes were red and puffy and he would see the red mark on her face.
"Crysta come here, I'll drive you home." He said softly.
"No!" She cried pushing at him. "You don't want me to talk I wont! I will leave you alone and you never have to hear me talk again!" She cut off a sob.
"It wasn't that baby. With these people, if you know to much you will get hurt." He said. "I have to protect myself also."
"I wont tell the cops anything Frankie I promise." She sniffed and let him wrap his arms around her.
"I know bambina." He said. "I am sorry for hitting you."
"I just don't want to be left in the dark." She said. "I really like you Frankie." She said and ran her knuckles over his face.
"That's why I don't want to tell you." He told her softly. "You are a good girl. If you know you may run. And if you don't…well I don't want to corrupt you." Crysta nodded.
"I would still like to know." She said.
"In time." He whispered, and leaned down to kiss her.
"OK." She said against his lips.
"Let's go home."
