I know, I know, it's been too long since I updated. I'm sorry. Forgive me?
It had been two days since the full moon and most of us were sitting in the large center room by the fire after a small supper. I looked around and didn't see Kathleen. I glanced out the window and saw her walking down one of the paths through the orchard. I walked outside but couldn't see her anymore. I wandered down the path I had seen her on until I reached a fork. I saw her standing beneath a flowering pear tree. She looked beautiful. Her long black hair was glistening in the moonlight and some petals from the flowering tree had gotten caught in her hair.
"Hey Kat," I whispered as I walked up behind her and touched her arm. She turned slowly to look at me.
"What are you doing out here by yourself?"
"I was looking around. Isn't this place beautiful?"
"It is." We locked eyes as I said this. Then we both turned as we heard music coming from the house.
"Sounds like someone is having fun." She said.
"I love this song."
"I don't really know any songs but this sounds nice."
"It's called Every Time We Touch. Want to dance." I asked holding my hand out to her.
"I don't know how."
"It doesn't matter; I'll lead and teach you." I grabbed her hands and placed them around my neck, and then I grabbed her waist. "Here, you move like this." I wasn't teaching her anything complicated just a box-step slow dance.
After a minute she stopped looking at her feet and looked up. She reached up and brushed a petal out of my hair. She froze for a moment as she realized how close we now were. I leaned down and pressed my lips to hers, she kissed back with more force than I was expecting. When we broke apart she laid her head on my shoulder and we continued dancing like that for some time.
"Will you be my girlfriend?" She took her head off my shoulder and we stopped dancing. Then she looked me in the eye.
"I'm not entirely sure what that means. But if it means spending time with you and being with you, then yes." I laughed and then she started laughing.
"Yes that's pretty much what that means. I keep forgetting that being human is new to you. You don't act like it is."
"I try not to actually. And most of it I've watched before even if I haven't done it." A new song began playing I recognized it with the first few notes. She listened carefully to the words.
And every long lost dream
Led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart
They were like northern stars
Pointing me on my way
Into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That god bless the broken road
That led me straight to you
"I like this one, it's sweet." She smiled up at me. "What's it called?"
"God Bless the Broken Road." I said hugging her close. "And it's pretty much how I feel about you." I loosened my grip and she leaned up and kissed me. When that song was over we went and sat on the stone bench beneath the tree. She leaned up against me as I wrapped my arms around her.
"Tell me about your family." She asked.
"The only family I have left is Alana. Both of our parents died when we were young. They died fighting, we don't really know how or why. They were both Halloweens as well. Our mother was a vampire though not a bat like Alana, and my father was a fire elemental. We've lived up in the mountains since I was three. When my parents died I had to take care of myself and Alana. It hasn't always been easy but we're close so that made it a bit simpler." I looked down at her, she looked thoughtful.
"You have one more family member." She said, putting her hand to my face. I looked at her confused. "You have me." I looked at this girl, whom I'd only known for nine days. I think I love her. Would she even know what that meant if I said it? Probably not. But I could learn to say it in Crow, she would know what I meant then.
"I'm glad" I smiled at her then leaned in and kissed her again." What about your family?"
"My pack was my family. I don't remember ever being with humans. The wolf that was Alpha when I was a pup was a female named Taila, meaning wolf. She was a good leader. She died when I was seven. The next alpha, the one who I have grown up with and been led by since then is Zo which means Spiritual Leader. He has been a good friend and a good leader. I have been second to only him since we were ten. I have had friends but after what happened to Kerri I distanced myself from everyone so it couldn't happen again."
"That must have been lonely."
"It was a bit, but I always had Zo. There was no danger of me hurting him because as Alpha he would never be my guard."
"What was your wolf name? I know you told us the day we met but I've forgotten."
"Kachina, which means spirit."
"You have a strong spirit." She smiled at me and laughed.
"As do you. Teach me another dance." She said as a new song came on. It was upbeat and fast though I didn't recognize the words. So I started to spin her and swing. We spun round and round, first just her then both of us. At the end as the song wound down I spun her away and she twirled and twirled then finally came to a stop on her toes with her arms raised high. Her eyes were sparkling and she was grinning.
"What's that called?"
"I don't know the technical term for it, we just call it Spin dancing."
"It's fun!" I laughed at her as she twirled back to me. Then grabbed her and held her close as another slow song started.
"What's this one?" I listened and recognized it after a bit.
"It sounds kind of sad."
"It sort of is."
"I still like it though." She rested her head on my shoulder and closed her eyes as we danced. I looked back at the house and saw my sister standing in the window smirking at me. I realized she had been purposefully playing these particular songs. I just shook my head at her, I couldn't tell for sure but she seemed to be laughing now.
"We should probably go back, It's getting late." I said when the song ended.
"Okay." I grabbed her hand and held it in mine as we walked back to the house.
When we got back to the house the others were all still sitting by the fire talking. When Kathleen and I walked in everyone gathered together and Chris came up to us.
"We've decided on something." I gave him a weird look what was he talking about. "We've decided on who the Alphas will be."
"You decided without us?" I asked.
"Yes, because we decided it was you, both of you." I was shocked about me but not about Kathleen, though she looked shocked as well.
"Very good!" Chris smiled, he must have guessed that the voice would comment on their choice. "You have found your Alphas, your leaders. You have chosen well. I know you two don't think that you are the correct choice but that is why you are the correct choice. You don't see yourself as better than everyone else at everything. True leaders must know when to delegate. Do not worry, you will help each other through it all, and you will have the help of your new family. And those of you who are not so sure that they are the right choice will soon realize that they are, and that you really don't want the responsibility that they will have to bare together. Kat and I looked at each other, we were both unsure of ourselves but not of the other, we would hold each other up well. "Goodnight Halloweens." The voice said laughing.
The next day was a Sunday and we had all agreed that Sundays would be free days to spend as we wished. I decided to go to the library to see if I could find anything about the Crow Indian Tribe. I learned that the real tribe name was Apsaalooke which correctly translated meant children of the large-beaked bird. I was having difficulties finding anything much about their language.
"Trying to look stuff up about me?" Kat laughed as I jumped in surprise. She had come up behind me silently.
"You scared me!" She laughed
"So I noticed."
"Well yes that is sort of what I'm doing. Although I'm finding it hard to come across anything in English, most of it is in un-translated Crow."
"That's because our language isn't well known to outsiders. I'm actually surprised you found anything in English."
"It was translated by a Halloween from the past who was also Crow. One of the original Halloweens actually."
"I didn't know there had been another of the tribe. What was her power? Does it say?"
"It does. It says she was a black Fire Horse."
"It seems odd to me that I never heard even a single story about her."
"It says here she was best friends with a Ghost Fairy."
"Does it say what that is?"
"It has descriptions for both. A Fire Horse looks like a normal horse except that its mane and tail are flames and sometimes depending on the breed of horse so are their feathers. A Ghost Fairy is similar to a fairy but they are see-through as a ghost and are often sad. They also often end up staying behind as spirits for a purpose after death."
"Why is that interesting?"
"I have an idea that's all. Does it say what their names were?"
"Yes, Anang, which means star, was her tribe name and she was called Anna. And her friend was Alima, which means wise."
"What are you thinking?"
"I'm not saying yet."
"Because I am not sure."
"Let's go down for dinner." She grabbed my hand and whisked me away. When we got downstairs I could see Seera and Evan sitting in a corner together and everyone else scattered about the room except for Alana and Natalia who had dinner duty today. Then just as we were about to sit down on the sofa they walked in with the food.
"Dinner's ready." Alana said setting it down on the table. We all sat down to eat. I noticed the large difference between this dinner and our first, there was a lot more talking and laughing. We were becoming a family. When we were all finished Kat stood up.
"May I ask you some questions?"
"You may ask but I do not promise answers."
"Are you a ghost?"
"Did you live here when you were alive?"
"Yes."I still could not figure out what Kat was getting at.
"Were you Alima?" I was shocked, I had never even thought of that, though now that I did it kind of made sense.
"Yes. How did you know that?"
"I read it, or rather Alex read it. In the book that Anang left behind. Will we ever see you?"
"Maybe" The voice said laughing.
"Why did you choose to stay behind?"
"That story is for another day. Goodnight Halloweens."
"How did you know that?" Alana asked.
"I read it in a book that I found in the library and I guess Kathleen figured it out. How did you think of that?"
"I don't know. I've been wondering who she was and why she is here and when you read about what a ghost fairy was it just sort of came to me that maybe that's what she is."
"So what do we want to do tonight?" Alana asked
"We could play a game. I bet Kathleen's never played any card or board games." I suggested
"True. I have not."
"Do we have any here though?" Narcissa asked.
"We can look." We looked around and actually found a closet full of games. We played monopoly with teams of 2 and then played uno for a few hours. It took a little while to get Kat to understand both games but she seemed to enjoy learning them and didn't mind that everyone else laughed when she screwed up and was confused, she just laughed with them and asked what was wrong. When we all finally decided to go to bed it had been a fun filled interesting day.
