Chapter 1
It's not an understatement that all Nogi Takumi had was music. He sucked at academic and too clumsy to be good at athletic. Music was the only thing that he could be proud of. Even though he looked plain and had a rather gloomy personality, as soon as he opened his mouth to sing, everyone would instantly look at him in awe.
But it was also not an understatement that music was his curse. Music had a value when it had listeners. A song that nobody heard of was pretty much a hidden treasure that would turn to junk if it was kept hidden too long. Just as Takumi's golden voice. It was useless if it was let out in an empty room. Only echoes could be heard afterwards, not the thunderous sound of clapping that every performer dreamed of.
Yes, Takumi cursed the fact that he was blessed with the voice of an angel, but somehow God forgot to bless him with the skill to ward off his number one hurdle: Stage fright.
Fifteen year-old Takumi scrambled out of his classroom as soon as the bell rang. It was lunch time. He'd rather eat at the empty rooftop than having to get squished by the crowd in the cafeteria. It wasn't like he had any friend to eat lunch with anyway, with new high school and all. He was definitely not the type who was able to make friends on the first few weeks of school. Besides, the spring breeze felt so nice up there. Not to mention the warm sunlight. With those thoughts in mind, Takumi whistled merrily and fasten his steps on the stairs heading for the roof. A lunch box made by his mother was held tightly on his right hand, while his left was snuggled comfortably in his plaid trouser pocket.
Right in front of the rooftop door, Takumi stopped. He strained his ear, focusing on a faint melody that was heard from the other side of the door.
Someone is singing, He thought. And what a wonderful voice it was. Not wanting to surprise the singer, the glasses boy pressed the door handle slowly and let the door opened little by little. He popped his head in and peeked. A boy with an almost shoulder-length dyed red hair was standing on the edge of the roof railing. His back was facing Takumi, but he was sure the boy was the one singing since there was nobody else there. Takumi wasn't familiar with the song, but his ears welcomed this new melody immediately. He supposed it helped that the singer had a wonderful voice.
Takumi stepped into the roof as stealthy as he possibly could. He closed the door behind him with no sound, and then leaned back on it. Eyes closed, ears working, lunch forgotten. The song sounded a bit repetitive, so in no time he was able to follow with simple 'nanana's. True to its 'Attention Graber' nickname, dubbed by his family, Takumi's voice immediately attracted the other boy. He stopped singing and turned his head to see the newcomer. Takumi instantly clammed up and opened his eyes.
Two earth-colored eyes met. One with curiosity and amazement, while the other with fear and embarrassment.
"Some voice you got there," The red haired boy said while walking towards Takumi. A big smile was plastered on his face. Takumi couldn't help but noticed that this boy was one of those pretty boy types that could easily pass as a girl with the right makeup and outfits. And he thought that they only existed in manga.
"Hey, hey, let me hear you sing some more!" The boy was getting more excited as he became closer. He stopped just a few feet in front of Takumi.
Takumi could feel his palms started to become sweaty. He always felt like this in the presence of new people. "No, sorry," He replied coldly and turned his body around to open the door behind him. The door was only half open when it was slammed shut again by a foot. Reflex, Takumi turned back to face the proprietor with an angry glare.
"Oya, oya…you thought that was a request?" The stranger grinned dangerously as he moved his face closer to Takumi's. His right foot stayed firmly on the door. "Maybe the name Miyashita Kaoru might make you sing?"
Takumi gulped. Miyashita Kaoru. Of course he knew that name. Miyashita was notorious for being the leader of a gang full of delinquents. He was strong and fast, the best combination as a fighter. Takumi couldn't believe the seemingly slender and effeminate guy in front of him now was that Miyashita.
"Well?" Miyashita raised one eyebrow.
Takumi could only pray that his voice would be willing to come out. It's only one audience, He told himself. I can do this.
Takumi adjusted his black-rimmed glasses, took a deep breath, and…
Puked all over Miyashita.
