Someone was lifting her up, and her eyes wouldn't open. She felt as though her body had been sucked dry, and there was no strength left. Her wolf didn't like that feeling, but she was tired too. Tired and heartbroken—a feeling which, for once, they didn't differ on.
No, no, nonononono. She didn't want to get up.
"Chaney, come on."
Whoa…hey…wait a minute. That voice sounded familiar—but the scent was familiar and strange at the same time. So sweet, so delicious, but wilder now. More robust than it had been. Her eyes opened slowly, and he slipped a hand behind her head to support her.
"Guess I should think twice before I try that again," Alexis said softly, and suddenly she realized why he smelled different. He smelled like a wolf.
Suddenly the ache in her chest was an ache of a different sort. Happiness, maybe. Love, certainly. She reached up with what strength she could find and wrapped her arms around his neck. "If you ever do that again, I'll kill you for real," she said.
"I believe you. I can smell the other guy's blood all over you. By the way, it's a good thing he's dead, because otherwise I'd be up there shredding through his guts right now. Still might have to show the rest some serious ass kicking."
She smiled. "Go show 'em who's boss."
Alexis chuckled. "Literally," he said, because he knew the truth of his new nature instinctively. His kind of wolf always did. They didn't get to be in charge by second guessing themselves.
She'd always known he'd be an alpha.
