I walked through the school hallway silently. I smiled at people if they waved or said hi. On my way to government, someone stopped me in my tracks.
"Heather, wait up!" I couldn't believe what I had just heard. There was no way that the most popular boy in school actually wanted to walk with me to class. Let alone talk. The blood rushed to my cheeks and I looked down at the floor while I waited for him. He must have been running. By the time he got to me, he had to catch his breath.
"Do you always walk that fast?" he asked me between breaths. I simply shrugged. "I felt like I was running a marathon." He laughed slightly but stopped when he noticed how uncomfortable I seemed. "What's wrong?" I stayed silent. "Are you going to talk to me at all, Heather?" Silence. "Whatever. I wanted to ask you something… But I guess not."
He started walking away. I watched him. Before he turned the corner, he looked back at me. It was a look of sadness? I wasn't entirely sure. That was Samuel. He prefers to be called Sam, though. He was gorgeous. Blond hair and blue eyes. He was a little taller than me as well. Then again, a lot of people are taller than me.
Compared to Sam, I'm very plain, brown hair and brown eyes. My hair goes to about three inches below my shoulders. My clothes are average. And unlike Sam, I'm not popular at all. Of course I had friends. Just not as many as Sam does… I've liked him since the 8th grade, but I've never had the courage to tell him. Then there was always the issue of him being a senior and me a sophomore… I never have won in the game of love.
I continued my walk to Government class deep in thought. I wondered what Sam had wanted to ask me. I made it just in time for Government. Sam had held me up by about three minutes. I had to practically run to make it on time. I was the last person to walk into the class room. Everyone stared at me. I smiled then took my seat next to Daymian.
"Way to be on time." Daymian whispered. I glared at him. He simply laughed.
"It's not my fault I got held up in the hallway. I was talking to someone for once." I said. Daymian gasped then laughed quietly again. "Oh be quiet." I whispered.
"I'm sorry. It's just that you never talk to people. Except for me, Emily, Ben, Kevin, and Rachel."
"I apologize for not having many friends." I said. A girl named Kaitlin then turned around and shushed us. Daymian and I ended our conversation. The rest of class we spent in silence.
After Government was lunch. I had the same lunch shift as all of my friends. It was also the same lunch shift that Sam was on. I sat down at the table to find Sam sitting next to me. I stared at him for a moment.
"What are you doing here?" I finally asked. He smiled.
"She speaks!" Sam said happily. Daymian laughed at me.
"Oh yeah, Heather. You were being real social with him in the hallway." Daymian said.
"Back to Heather's question" said Rachel, "what are you doing here?"
"Yeah. People are staring." Said Emily.
"Your friends are so welcoming." Sam said. "If you must know, I'm here to get to know Heather." I was shocked. I felt my mouth drop open.
"Get to know me?" I asked in disbelief. "Why?"
"Well… How 'bout if I stop by your house after school? Then I'll answer your question." He said.
"Um…" I said. Rachel kicked me from under the table and Emily nudged me. I sighed. "Sure." I said. Emily and Rachel smiled at each other. Daymian winked at me. Ben just sat there with a blank look on his face. I on the other hand shut up and blushed. Then Sam smiled at me.
"You're so cute when you blush like that." Sam said sweetly. Emily giggled at that comment. I ate my lunch in silence.
Sam got up at the exact same time I did to take his lunch tray up. It was kind of creepy. I stopped and turned on him. "What is your problem?" I asked.
"I have no problem." He said. "I just simply want to hang out with you."
"But why? I'm like the most anti-social girl in the entire school! And you're the most popular boy. We don't match up at all." I said.
"What's your point?" Sam asked. I sighed out of frustration and walked away. "Wait up! Must you always walk so fast?" He started running after me. I just went straight to my fourth period.
Fourth period is my favorite period of the day. Sweet, sweet band class. I was playing the Trumpet this year. It was great. We're in the middle of our marching season. We're working really hard to make it to ACC's.
Band was my favorite class because it was, like a safe haven from Sam and my other friends. Well, except for Ben and Rachel. Ben played the trumpet, while Rachel played the Clarinet. Of course when class was over, Sam sought me out yet again.
"Sam." I said.
"Heather. Let's talk." Sam said.
"I don't care if our social statuses don't match."
"What?" I asked. "How can't you care? Isn't hanging out with me bad for your image?"
"Well… Yes it is bad for image. But I don't care. I do care about spending time with you before I graduate and head off to college." Sam said softly. I stared at him. "I've kinda had a crush on you since we were in the same German class last year.
"I know it's such a shock. The popular senior falling for the anti-social sophomore. But it's true. And you know what else? Homecoming is in two weeks. I'd like you to go with me."
Three words flashed into my thoughts, OH MY GOSH! He really asked to Homecoming! Holy cow!
