Chapter Eighteen

The DJ put a slow song on, so Ben dragged me out on the dance floor. He had begged me to at least dance one slow song with him. I agreed, but only one song.

Ben rested his hands lightly on my waist. I put my around his neck. We swayed back and forth slowly while spinning around in a circle. He was actually a pretty good dancer. When the song was over, we went back over to where our stuff was. I sat down to rest my feet.

Jeez. These heels really hurt. I should have worn flats. Too late for that now, though. When I sat down, I saw Sam standing by the door that led into the science wing. Stephanie was with him of course. She was practically glued to his side. Sam looked over in my direction. An expression of sadness filled his face when he saw me with Ben.

I looked away from him and over at Ben who had been talking to me. I heard footsteps come up behind my chair. I looked up and behind me, and there was Sam. In the flesh and everything. "Hi, Heather." Sam tried to smile, but it wasn't really a smile.

"Hi Sam." I said. He looked amazing all dressed up. He smelled really nice too, I just wanted to jump up and throw my arms around him. To inhale his smell and imprint it into my memory. The DJ came onto the loud speaker calling the Homecoming court up to the DJ booth. Stephanie walked over and grabbed Sam's hand.

"C'mon Sam, we need to go." Stephanie said. She glared at me, and then pulled Sam off towards the booth. A few minutes later, they cleared the dance floor for the Homecoming Court. Ben and I stood there watching and listening. To my horror, but not to my surprise, Sam won Homecoming King.

I watched in pain as Sam and Stephanie danced together for an entire song. I just felt like running up there and punching Stephanie in the face. I turned away from them, and walked back to the table.

"That hurt, didn't it?" Ben asked me. A tear rolled down my cheek as I shook my head. Ben pulled me into his arms and kissed my cheek. "It's alright. You're too good for him anyway." Ben said softly. I cried on Ben's shoulder for most of the night. At some point he pulled me onto his lap and almost rocked me back and forth.

"Heather, what happened?!" I heard Rachel, Daymian and Emily say. I looked up at them and wiped my eyes.

"She didn't exactly take seeing Sam dance with Stephanie very well." Ben said. Daymian leaned down towards me and looked into my eyes.

"It's alright Heather. They probably won't last very long anyway. It's not worth your time." Daymian whispered. Rachel came over and gave me a tissue.

"Wipe your make up off. It looks terrible." She said. The DJ announced the final dance. It was a slow song of course. Ben took my hand and pulled me onto the dance floor.

"Hey, you said only one slow song." I argued.

"I know, but this is the last dance. C'mon, please?" he begged. I sighed then allowed him to dance with me. In the middle of the song, someone came over towards us.

"May I cut in?" he asked. I looked up, and it…it was… it was Sam! Ben glanced down at me, and I nodded in response.

"Alright, but if you hurt her, we're going to have a problem." Ben said. Sam put his hands on my waist and I put my arms around his neck like I had done with Ben.

"What brings you over to dance with me?" I asked him.

"I thought I would dance with you…. It wasn't much fun dancing with Stephanie. You're a better dancer than her anyways. Besides. I love you, not her." He whispered into my ear.

"Oh?" I asked. He nodded. "You're an ok dancer. Other than the fact that you keep stepping on my foot." I laughed then held him closer to my body.

"Sorry. I know I'm a klutz." Sam's eyes dropped, and I saw a hint of blush on his cheeks. "Can I ask you something?" he said. I nodded.

"Do you think we could start over? I don't want Stephanie, and I saw you crying after we danced. I don't think you want me to be with her either. So, please, can we get back together. I want us to be together…" he said.

I looked deep into the crystal blue eyes that I had missed so much. I nodded slowly. Sam's broke into a complete total grin, as did mine.

"Thank you so much." He let go of my waist and pulled me into a really tight embrace.

"Um, Sam. Can't breathe." I gasped.

"Sorry." Sam loosened his grip then leaned his face in towards mine. The moment I had been longing for, was finally going to happen. Sam's lips pressed slowly against mine at first, then pressed harder. Our lips were fused together until the end of the song.

"Sam." I said softly when the kiss ended.

"Yes, Heather."

"I love you."

"I love you too." He whispered as he pressed his lips against mine again.
