A/N: Hi everyone! For those of you who read Forgive Me Before You Go, welcome back! For those of you who didn't, I'm AmazingGrace91, and this is my second story! This is my first attempt at a first-person POV story, so I hope you like it!
The full title of this story is "I'm in Love With a Professional Heartbreaker: How Adam Met Eve", but it was too long to fit the fictionpress limit. Look in my profile for the actual summary. Now, I know I said earlier that I was planning on writing that other story I mentioned in chapter 60 of FMBYG, but I decided to wait and give this story a try first. Mind you, this is just a test run. I don't know how long it'll take me to update this one, but I hope it's liked enough for you guys to want me to continue it. I plan on switching the POV between Adam and Eve, but I might add Sean's POV in there, too. Yeah, you guys don't know who the hell these three people are right now, but you'll find out soon!
Okay, enough blabbing. You guys probably want to start reading the story now. Before I continue, though, I want to give a shout-out to some awesome people who reviewed the final chapters of FMBYG!
Live4Lolz, thenutrunningthenuthouse, Randomness11, xxsourgirlxx, sakat38, and a special thanks to tf2185 for reviewing and for adding me to their favorites list!
Alright, let's get started! Enjoy Chapter 1! :]
Chapter 1: Literally Falling for You
I hate snow.
I honestly don't understand the logic of those people who love it. Yeah, the love it until they're forced to stand in it for 45 minutes straight! I've been standing here for ages wrapped up in my hoodie that's three sizes too big and a denim skirt with black leggings. Since I'm such a genius, I failed to bring my coat to school today, but I wasn't too bothered by it. After all, DawnMarie was going to pick me up. Was going to pick me up. The idiot most likely forgot.
So here I am, digging the stiletto heels of my black boots into the snow as I progressively lose feeling in my ears and nose. Maybe I'll just stand here until I die from hypothermia. Then when somebody finds my ice-encrusted body, DawnMarie will miraculously form a soul and feel bad about stranding me in front of the high school. Like that'll ever happen…
I attempted to growl in frustration, but all I ended up doing was coughing my brains out. The 32 degree temperature prevented me from making any other sort of noise. That was enough to finally convince me to move; that is…if my feet weren't frozen to the sidewalk.
Luckily, I was still able to move. Shivers continuously ran down my spine as I started to make my way down the ice-covered sidewalk away from the school. Do you know how hard it is to walk in freaking stiletto heels in general, let alone on ice? Ugh!
DawnMarie and I don't like each other very much. I guess it's due to how we were brought together. She's not my actual sister; she's my step-sister. I know that step-siblings bond and act like full-blood siblings a lot of the time, but that isn't the case with us. My mom married her dad, and I guess the story behind how my parents split up scared her; sorry, scares her. She never fails to mention it at any given moment during our "sibling" fights.
I really hate talking about my biological father. My mom and I have this mutual agreement to avoid the topic whenever it's brought up. But for some reason, I can't avoid the memory at the moment.
When I was a baby, my father…well…he killed someone. It was an accident, but it was a horrible period of time for my family. He went to court and was found guilty under the charge of manslaughter. My mom never told me the amount of years he was sentenced to prison, but truthfully, I really don't want to know. All my mom told me was he was in a fight and he killed the guy by accident. I'm not sure why, but part of me thinks that it wasn't an accident. I've seen pictures of him that my mom thought she was hiding from me and he looks scary as hell. He's built like a professional wrestler and he's covered in tattoos. Not the type of guy I'd want to get in a fight with.
After he was arrested, it really took a toll on my mother. She just wandered around the house like a lost soul until I was ten years old. After one particularly horrible sob-fest on my dad's birthday, I suggested finding a new man for her. She didn't like it, but after some extreme coaxing, she finally gave in. E-harmony unfortunately wasn't created at the time, so we used this website called "Cupid'sArrowRightInTheBackside". Google is such a wondrous thing. I don't know if that still exists, but God bless anyone who still uses it.
Anyway…so we went on the website. After making her a profile that over-exaggerated how sexy she was, we waited. And waited. And waited some more. Finally, a month later, somebody responded. His name was Lance Mayfield. They started talking via internet for a while until he finally asked her on a date. That was the first day my mother let me stay alone in our house. That is, after the whole "if you fall and break your hip, or the house spontaneously combusts or the dog gets hit by a runaway clown car, make sure to call me!" lecture. We didn't even HAVE a dog!
So my mom promised me that she'd be home by 10. Guess what? She didn't come home until 2 in the morning! I was asleep on our living room carpet when she walked in smelling like cologne and some other foreign smell that I didn't have the guts to ask about what it was or where it came from. She was all giggly and told me that they set another date. Needless to say, I was excited myself. After going about 8 and a half years without a father, the prospect of finally having one made me extremely happy.
So, as you probably guessed by now, they ended up getting married about a year after they started dating. I was 11 years old and my mom's maid of honor in the wedding. One thing I found out that day that I didn't know previously was Lance was married at a time, too, and he had a daughter. She's my age, and her name was DawnMarie. You want to know what's scary? My name is Evelyn, which, when shortened, is "Eve". DawnMarie and Eve. Talk about a coincidence from hell.
I tried my best to be DM's friend; trust me, I really did. I suddenly felt like I was catapulted into my own effed-up version of Cinderella. I had a psycho step-sister, so all I needed was an over-controlling bitch of a step-parent. By some small miracle, Lance turned out to be an awesome guy. He even adopted me and treats me like an actual daughter! Now my name is Eve Mayfield.
Okay, so maybe DawnMarie and I don't like each other, but at least there's Chastity. Chastity is our half-sister, and she's eight years old. DawnMarie and I are 17. One would think having a sibling who's 9 years younger than you would be a drag, but it isn't for me. She's the epitome of a sweetheart. Her name's a bit strange, but it's still pretty nice in its own special way.
So I lived happily with my step-family and mother for a few years until another tragedy struck. Four years ago, Lance was in a motorcycle accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Now he's permanently stuck in a wheelchair. That was yet another tragic time for my family, but he seems to be okay with it now. He didn't let a few scars and the fact that he can no longer move his legs get in the way of his loyalty to us.
I sighed and shook the memories out of my head. The action made my skull ache, so I stopped immediately. I didn't realize that I wandered off my usual path and ended up in a part of town I didn't recognize. Great. This was an epic fail on my part.
I looked around me and shivered again. I wasn't sure if the shivering was due to the cold atmosphere or the unnerving feeling I got about this graffiti-covered street.
I pinned my black hair behind my ear and blew a breath of warm air out in front of me. I watched the small cloud formed by my breath float for a second before it disappeared. I needed to get out of here. I pulled my hoodie even closer against my body as I started to walk towards the other end of the street. I was moving a lot faster than I was before and I ended up hitting a section of black ice. I was flat on my face within a second. The sudden fall didn't even register in my brain until I heard someone approach me from behind.
Automatically consumed with fear over who was walking towards me, I spun around and attempted to stand up. I ended up getting half-way into a standing position before I slipped again; this time I ended up on my ass.
"Hey! Are you okay?" a male voice asked from his spot a few feet away.
"Oh God, he's probably a rapist or a murderer or- " I opened my eyes and gasped. "Or an amazingly hot guy!"
The guy was a little over six feet tall with long black hair. It had this interesting dark red tint to it; I wondered if it was natural or some sort of interesting hair dye. He looked at me curiously with the most amazing light blue eyes I've ever seen as he pulled his hands out of the pockets of his black hoodie.
He gave me a strange look. "…Are you okay?" he repeated again in a much slower tone.
I didn't realize that I was staring at him with what probably looked like a drugged-up expression on my face. "Oh, yeah! Yeah, I'm fine!" I said with a nervous laugh. I attempted to stand up again, but my instincts told me to sit back down before I bruised my ass again.
The guy's eyes suddenly adverted onto the frayed hem of my skirt. My face blushed hot enough to melt the ice I was sitting on as I attempted to pull my skirt down as far as I could. Unlike some girls, I actually tried to cover the parts of my body I'd rather not expose to a guy I don't know.
He suddenly turned red, which took me by surprise. "Sorry!" he said quickly. "You cut your knee," he continued, motioning towards my legs.
I looked down at my knee. "Oh," I said stupidly as I looked at the hole in the knee area of my leggings. I coughed to avoid talking to the guy as I rubbed my knee with my hand. All that accomplished was covering my hand in a thin layer of blood.
"Here," the guy said, reaching out his hand to me. I looked at it like it was about to attack me, which made him laugh.
"I'm just going to help you up," he said reassuringly. "I won't do anything else; I promise."
I hesitated for a second before I reached my blood-free hand out and wrapped it around his. He stepped onto the ice as carefully as he could before he pulled me up and grabbed onto my wrists to keep me in a standing position.
"Thanks," I said as I blushed for the billionth time in the past 5 minutes. That's when I noticed something strange.
"What happened to your fingers?" I asked. Two of his fingers on his left hand were taped together.
"Oh," he said as he followed my gaze onto his hand. "I broke two of my fingers. It's not that big of a deal."
"Does it hurt?" I asked, looking back up at his face.
"Not really. Well, it doesn't now. It hurt a lot at first."
"How did you break them?" I asked. Wow, my curiosity suddenly made me creepy. The fact that I don't know this guy, yet I'm asking him about something he probably doesn't want to talk about, really wasn't like me.
"My brother slammed my hand in a car door," he said. He smiled. "It was an accident. I can't stay mad at him for long. He has one of those faces you can't hate when you want to kill him." He laughed in a very light way that completely contradicted his style.
"That's not the case with my step-sister," I said. "Her face makes me angrier when I'm forced to look at it!"
"I sense you don't like her very much," he said, raising one of his eyebrows. That's when I noticed he has his eyebrow pierced. The piercing was small and almost unnoticeable, but I guess the angle we were both on made it more visible.
"No, not really," I replied, not taking my eyes off his eyebrow. I think I creeped him out a bit, because he let go of my wrists and backed off a few feet.
"You look like you're freezing," he said. "Where do you live? I can drive you home if you'd like."
His offer took me by surprise, so I stood like an idiot for a full minute before I found the response I wanted. "You look pretty cold, too," I said, stepping off the sidewalk to avoid slipping on more ice.
"I am. I'm freezing my ass off," he said with a laugh.
"Where's your car?" I asked. I didn't remember seeing a car anywhere along the street.
"Down there," he said, motioning behind him towards a black convertible.
"Oh," I replied stupidly. Why do I always act like a complete idiot around cute guys? I had to work on my flirting skills. I could always ask DawnMarie since she's pretty much a bimbo, but that option would be a last resort. The very last resort.
"I got out of my car when I saw you slip. I just wanted to make sure you weren't hurt," he said.
He smiled his care-free smile and brushed my side-swept bangs behind my ear. "I like your hair," he said.
Now it was my turn to smile. My hair was black with the exception of my bangs. My bangs were dyed dark blue. My mom absolutely hates it, but hey, it's my hair. Let me do what I want with it! I also wore incredibly dorky glasses with thick black rims that I hate with a burning passion. After a massive amount of begging, my mom bought contacts for me for my 15th birthday. Thank God I was wearing my contacts now!
He stared into my dark blue eyes and tilted his head to one side. "You're going to have a bruise there," he said. He brushed the fingers on his good hand across the side of my face.
"Wonderful," I murmured. Just what I wanted. Now I gave the guys at school yet another reason to laugh at me.
"Anyway, can I give you a ride?" he asked again. "I don't want you to freeze out here."
My mind was screaming "YES!", but my instincts were screaming "NO!". As much as I wanted to go with this guy, I didn't know him, and getting in his car with him had "bad idea" written all over it. That idea was covered in more bad words than the vandalized walls around me.
"Um, I'm sorry but…I don't know you. I don't know if I can trust you. I'll be alright," I said.
The guy frowned at me, but he nodded in understanding. "Alright; if you're sure," he said hesitantly. "I really don't want to leave you here, though. Can you call someone to pick you up? Do you have a cell phone?"
Shit. My cell phone.
"Well, yeah, but I think I left it in my locker," I said. "But don't worry! I'll be fine!" I quickly added on as the guy gave me a worried look.
"Are you absolutely positive?" the guy said. "I don't want to turn on the news and hear that you got hurt or killed or something."
Way to make me feel safe, dude. If he wasn't so cute, I probably would've slapped him.
"I'm sure," I said with a forced note of finality in my voice.
He sighed and nodded again. "Fine," he said. "Please be careful."
"I will," I said for what felt like the hundredth time. Seriously, who was this guy? My dad?
…No. If he was my dad, he'd kill me and get sent to prison.
I decided to avoid those memories again. I was so busy avoiding my own thoughts that I didn't hear the guy say good-bye. By the time I looked up, he was already at his car. Great. Now I feel like a huge ass.
Speaking of asses, mine still stung from my less-than-graceful fall to the sidewalk. I groaned in annoyance and rubbed my lower spine as I watched the guy drive away.
That guy. Why didn't I ask him what his name was? I'm such an idiot! Now I was legitimately mad at myself. Maybe he went to my school. If he did, he wasn't a junior because I haven't seen him in any of my classes. He looked older than me; maybe he wasn't in high school anymore.
I sighed and pushed my dark blue bangs behind my ear. They somehow fell loose from the time the guy pushed them out of my face to now. Since I didn't have my phone, I had no idea what time it was. I better hurry the hell up before my parents think I was kidnapped by a group of thugs or something.
I walked to the end of the street, avoiding anything that looked like ice in my path. Once I turned down another street, I recognized the park where Chastity and I hung out together every summer. Good. I know how to get home from here.
"Finally," I mumbled to myself. My house was on the other side of the park, so I made my way through the snow-covered grass and passed all the covered swings and slides as I thought back to the past few minutes.
At that point, I didn't realize just how important that guy would be to me in the upcoming year. If I thought hormones were bad now, I haven't seen anything yet. That, and if you told me now that I would be looking down the barrel of a gun in the near future, I'd most likely laugh. Let me tell you, I definitely wasn't laughing when it actually happened…
A/N: So, what do you think? Love it? Hate it? Do you want me to die a horrific, painful death? Let me know!
And for all of you who love my first story, I wrote the first two chapters of the sequel, but I'm having a hard time making the plotline believable. I'm also debating on if I should kill a character from the first story or not. We'll see. So far, it involves Emma having a nightmare about Tim and a guy who's apparently stalking her. Yay! Oh yeah, and remember that character I told you about in FMBYG who resembles Demetri? Well, now you know who I'm talking about! I created this character before Demetri, though, so technically, Demetri stole his looks!
Unlike the first story, there won't be a fun fact at the end of every chapter, since I just thought of this story idea this past summer while, shockingly, walking around Wal-Mart! xD
Chapter 2 will hopefully be posted soon! I'll try to update this as soon as I possibly can!
