Taste My Beat
"Sari! Weren't you listening at all to what I just said?" my best friend complained in my ear; I, Sari Nozuka, had better things to do than to listen to the idiotic drama of other high school girls, including the high school drama from my besties.
"Sorry, Jamie, I spaced again," I apologized halfheartedly.
"Ah, it's okay. I know you're probably thinking about what you're gonna do when you get back up to Vermont when your Christmas break is over," Jamie guessed incorrectly. As a matter-of-fact, that was the farthest thing from my mind. We set off at an easy pace down the three-mile road to civilization, leaving behind the little woodland creatures that we had taken an immediate liking to.
Halfway down the road, an uneasy feeling settled over me; it felt like we were being followed. "Jamie, do you feel that? Like something is following us?" I inquired softly, slowing our fast gait as I began to hear the soft footfalls behind us. She nodded and mumbled back just as softly.
"As soon as you said something, I felt unnerved. Did you create it, or is it someone you know?"
I shook my head negatively. "None of the above." Slowly but surely our stalker was getting closer and closer with each step we took. Soon, it was right on top of us.
I wheeled around to face our predator and found myself seeing stars on the ground. Jamie's screaming voice was the last thing I heard before I felt myself being lifted up and carried away. Then, I blacked out.
