Chapter 2
I blinked totally not getting the joke. I can't be dead and that's not denial talking, I literally cannot be dead; I'm right here-alive. I looked up at the nurse's face and there was no sign of joking there so I started to get out of bed to go and find somebody sane.
"Where are you going?" she asked innocently fidgeting with the flowers.
"Away from you, obviously," I replied adjusting my hospital gown on my way out. The hallways were super busy; doctors and hopefully mentally stable nurses were hustling around from room to room. They didn't seem to notice me as I wandered around.
Soon I came across a phone and decided to call my parents and to ask them where the hell they were. I dialed the number and it automatically went to the answering machine. The number you are trying to reach currently does not exist. To try again press 1, to connect to our operators press 2. I did the second option. "Angel City operator here, how may I help you?" Angel City? "Hello? Hello?" the woman said when I didn't say anything.
I hung up the phone and really started to panic. Nothing here is right- I must still be dreaming. I squeezed my eyes shut and tried to force myself to wake up. When I opened my eyes I was still here and it looked like the crazy ass nurse finally came looking for me.
I hurriedly ran into the closest room to hide and shut the door behind me. I shut my eyes again, gasping, trying to catch my breath. When I felt as though I could confront the situation rationally I opened my eyes.
Then I screamed at the top of my lungs.
I wasn't in the hospital anymore I was in what looked like a rainforest. It was misty and smelled like wet grass and animals. And in the middle lay a man. He was African American and was dressed as if he were some kind of hunter. His clothes were shredded and he lay with his eyes wide open. Then the next thing I know he blinks, sits up, and yawns stretching his arms out as though he had just woken from a nap or something.
"Hello," he said politely. "Are you stranded on this island too?"
I quickly turned and ran back through the door totally terrified about this place. I ran down the hallways ignoring the directed shoves and complains as I pushed my way through the corridor of people.
Scared and beginning to get a little paranoid I looked behind me to see if anybody was following. People were talking and pointing but nobody dared to chase after me. "Let the crazy girl run," I thought I heard somebody say.
The moment I turned back around was when I was caught. I ran into this guy-black spiky hair, hazel eyed, perfectly straight nose, and the saddest facial expression I had ever seen a person wear; as if he were about to cry, but was trying his hardest to keep a straight face. He didn't say a word he looked me over and then he leaned his head to the side and shook his head as though he were disappointed or ashamed.
I tried to struggle my way out of his stone grip, but I couldn't help but to get caught in his depressive gaze.
"Scarlett, there you are." I heard the familiar voice of the nurse call out. Then she was by my side. "Where did you run off to?"
I didn't answer I just continued to struggle my way out of this stranger's grasp.
The nurse sighed. "Zaden," Zaden? Was that his name? "Can you take her back to her room while I go and get the doctor?"
Zaden nodded once and took my arm in one hand and started to tow me back to my room. Once inside he shoved me toward the bed and shut the door. Then he looked at me, his face perfectly composed, and said "Don't bother trying to escape again."
This guy obviously doesn't know me very well.
As soon as he sat down I charged for the door and opened it, but somehow he had already gotten outside and pushed me back in muttering something…I think I heard him say the words "thick skulled."
"Sit." He murmured firmly standing by the door obviously not trusting me. I turned my head toward the window… "Don't even think it," he said nonchalantly.
I cleared my throat. "Where am I? Why am I here?" And how can I wake up from this never ending nightmare.
Zaden blinked. "You ask too many questions."
"Well, maybe I wouldn't have to ask questions all the time if somebody would just answer them every once in a while." I spat.
He sighed. "You can't."
I furrowed my eyebrows. "What?"
"You can't leave, not yet anyways."
I felt my face drop as I contemplated that. "Why?" I whispered.
He caught my gaze before he answered. "Because you made your choice."
Suddenly the nurse came back and she had brought the doctor this time. He had gray hair and thick glasses and was dressed like a normal doctor, but nothing was normal about this place. He started to walk toward me with his hand out and I inched away. Then I looked over my shoulder starting to consider the window again. I looked back when for some reason I can't imagine Zaden started chuckling. I raised an eyebrow.
"Scarlett," the doctor said. "My name is Alabaster and for starters I am not a doctor."
Confusion.
"I am your mentor, your guide, somebody to help make all this seem easier for you." He sighed. "The only reason my daughter Genevieve and I," he gestured toward the nurse. "Are dressed like this is to stimulate familiarity, understand?"
Out in the hallway I saw a woman dressed as an adventurer and I remembered the guy in the room who was mauled by some kind of animal. She must his nurse; it would make sense.
I gulped. "I understand," then I paused "no, that's a lie. I don't understand anything."
"Scarlett, before you woke up in the hospital, before you made your choice, what is the last thing you remember?" Alabaster asked.
I looked down trying my hardest to recall the last moment of normalcy I had. I was fuzzy for some reason- blurred. All I could remember is flashing lights and singing…
I looked back up at Alabaster, Genevieve, and Zaden. "I don't remember anything."
They all glanced at each other. "Are you sure?" Genevieve asked.
"Yeah, all I remember is lights and music and then I was in this really creepy place," I grimaced. "Where I did not make my choice."
"Pardon?"
I shook my head. "I never got the chance- this stupid flashing hole kept distracting me and when I tried to get rid of it I ended up here," I looked at Zaden. "There was this voice." Zaden diverted my gaze.
"Scarlett, you and your friends were driving home from a party-drunk, and you all got in a car accident," I turned my eyes to her. "You all died."
"Here we go again," I muttered. "Look, I'm not dead; how can I be dead if I'm sitting right here?" Zaden walked over to the counter. "I'm just having a really real dream/coma."
The next thing I now I have a knife through my gut.
"What the hell!" I screeched.
"Language," Genevieve whispered, but ignored her.
Zaden stood over me waiting, his hand still holding the dagger in my chest. "What the freak is the matter with you? Huh? You don't just go around stabbing random people! Way to be extremely rude! I mean, I was just having a conversation and all of the sudden you have the need to stab me? You have got some serious issues dude."
He rolled his eyes and in one sharp movement pulled the knife out of me and held it up. "You see, no blood, and no wound," he pointed to my chest which was perfectly healed; as if he had never stabbed me.
I gulped. "That doesn't prove anything," I whispered.
"Are you kidding me? This proves everything," Zaden threw the knife over on the counter. "If you were still alive, that would have killed you, but I bet you didn't even feel it."
"I still could be dreaming." I said stubbornly.
Zaden set his jaw and looked away. "There's know getting through to you," he said. "Whatever believe what you want," and then he left.
Alabaster sighed. "Look, Scarlett I know that this is very hard to believe, but it's 100 percent true and until you realize that you won't be able to get over it."
I nodded finally letting it sink in. "So is this heaven?" I asked looking around. "I always thought it would be more…heavenly."
Alabaster smiled and sat down next to me. "No, this is not heaven, but close. This is the city of angels."
"You mean Los Angeles?" I asked.
"No," he chuckled, "the city of guardian angels. That is what we are protectors of the innocent."
"Wow, how comic book like." I said. "The hole- it really was a third door wasn't it?" I looked at him.
"Yes, only certain people see it and only certain people are brave enough to answer its call." I guess that explains the flashing.
"But the voice- it was telling me not to."
"And you did anyway." He replied. "It didn't stop you."
My eyes dropped. The third door appeared to me because I was meant to choose it, but I didn't really choose it. I just went inside out of curiosity- it was a total accident. I can't help but to wonder where I would be if I didn't see it. I mean, obviously none of them would have led to home so that means that one must have led to heaven and the other to…
I shook the thought away. I didn't matter now I'll never know.
I took a deep breath. "So what do I do now?" I asked.
"You live."
