Hit the button and drop the
bombs.
Gunmetal grey plummets
towards earth.
Smoke rises in bursts
of flak.
Our enemies are silent
and I realize
that I am the reason
a child will be

fatherless

on this night.
I didn't want
to kill him.
He didn't want
to kill me
either.
But here in this plane,
it's country before
compassion.
Patriotism before
peace and
bombs before
babies.

I will get a medal
for showing no mercy here.

But awards put aside,
heartache is heartache
in any tongue.

And at the end of the day,
I am alone
with all of the things
I have done.
