The Deadliest Attraction Series
Alyx Phillips peeked around a tree, her eyes immediately snapping toward the creature kneeling at the stream bank. His back was turned to her, and she knew it was the best moment for her to kill him. Quietly she stepped around the tree, gently resting her feet on the dry leaves covering the ground. She took a few steps, making sure every few feet that he hadn't moved. As she stepped onto the soft earth directly behind him the creature stood up and turned around.
"You thought you could sneak up on me, Lyx?" he rasped, his scarlet eyes glinting dangerously. "Really? You know my kind have incredible hearing. I'm disappointed."
"Did you kill that girl, Sy?" Alyx asked quietly, shifting the knife she was holding behind her back, hoping that he didn't notice.
Sy glanced up briefly, pretending to think before he answered. "The banker's daughter? Lucille, right? I can't seem to re- Oh that's right!" His eyes snapped back to Alyx. "She was tasty, Lyx."
Alyx's upper lip curled in disgust. "I thought you were different from the others- from the rest of your kind."
Sy stepped up to her and brushed a lock of her hair behind her hair with his hand. "I am not different, Lyx. I never have been. You know that, sweetheart."
Alyx glanced away from him, knowing that if she continued to look at him she would merely let him go. He had to die and she had been sent to do it. If she failed then… Tears pricked at her eyes, and she fought the urge to wipe at them.
She shook her head and looked back at him- her Synn, her husband- and said, "I can't let you go, Sy. They'll know. If this knife," she brings it out to show him, "doesn't have your blood on it then they'll hunt you down. You murdered a little girl, Sy."
Sy pulled her to his chest, and buried his face in her neck as best he could. "Trust me," he whispered in her ear.
He grasped the knife and rolled up his sleeve. Alyx allowed herself to wipe the tears from her eyes as Sy stabbed the blade through his arm. Alyx let out a little scream, but composed herself quickly enough to catch him as collapsed. She lowered him gently to the ground and placed his head on her lap.
Sy smiled up at her and pulled the knife out of his arm, wincing as the blood flow increased from the wound. "You didn't have to kill me after all."
Alyx lightly wrapped her arms around his head and kissed his forehead. "I love you," she whispered.
Sy tried to look at her, but he didn't have the strength to, and he whispered, "I love you, too," and didn't breathe anymore.
