The Ballard of Charles Darnay

Charles was a good man,

And for all his life,

Had tried to forget,

His family's strife,

To London he moved,

To start anew,

He met new people

And his friendships grew,

To earn a living,

French he taught,

The language he knew,

Required little thought.

One day in prison, the next day free,

A few hours later, back there found he.

A spy on trial accused he stood,

His lawyer Mr Lorry proved him good,

Pre-court he met a Lucy Manette,

Fell in love they did, later to wed.

One day in prison, the next day free,

A few hours later, back there found he.

He journeyed to Paris to help an old friend,

But yet when he got there, by revolution was penned,

He was released again,

Then imprisoned once more,

A letter was found, lost 18 years before.

One day in prison, the next day free,

A few hours later, back there found he.

Asked to write a letter,

A trick it proved to be,

As fumes began to spread,

Darnay ceased to see.

Sydney Carton switched their clothes,

And acted in his place,

Charles Darnay was unconscious,

When carried out of that space.

But yet if he had not been,

If he had known of Carton's plan

He would surely have refused it,

He was a honest gentle-man.

In a carriage he was taken,

Away with wife and child,

His country of origin was unfamiliar and wild

One day in prison, the next day free,

A few hours later, back there found he.
