Chapter 4:

Sympathy for the Devil

Devan waited near the gates of the school for Dorian. She saw that his car was parked, so she knew he would come out of the building. He hated to pay parking fines. 2 minutes later he came out of the building and was walking towards her.

"Your late it's been 12 minutes." She joked when he came closer.

"Says you. My watch says I'm on time." He joked back. He unlocked his car and opened the passenger door for her. She got in and he started the car.

"So what's so important that it couldn't wait?"

"Why? You got something better to do?"

"Yeah. Apparently I have a music test to study for." She looked over at him and gave him a sympathetic look.

"I'm not moving the test. I can't stall everything just because of Julius all right?"

"Fine. So what does Lorelei want?"

"Some good news and bad news."

"What's the good news?"

"She got hold of Adam, and he agreed to be your teacher."

"That's good. Then what's really bad?"

"Julius also got hold of Adam."

"How is that bad?"

"Adam is really good at killing and not getting caught. If you have enough money for him he'll take the job. Lorelei just got worried that maybe Julius wants him to go after you."

What?" She said frantically. She felt scared. A crazy demon just might be coming to kill her, and there was nothing she could do about it.

"I don't think he'll do it though."

"Why?"

"He has some history with you and your mother. So he won't do it."

"My mother?" she thought. "What could he possibly have to do with mom?"

"We're here." He said.

She stepped out of the car and walked through the woods to the mansion. There inside Sirius was there with a caste on his arm. Cesca was there, she had a few bruises on her arms but she was okay. The air in the room felt tense and full of fear.

"Hi. Why is everyone uptight?" Dorian asked.

"I don't know maybe it might because there's a crazed demon killer who's out there with a hit list." Cesca answered sarcastically.

"Well you don't have anything to worry about he doesn't go after mutts."

Now her teeth were bared and her eyes were missing pupils." Just because I have a few bruises doesn't mean I can't take you down easily!"

"Why don't you try then?"

"Stop it, both of you!" Lorelei yelled. It echoed through out the room. She could she was still angry, her hair was a fiery red this time. "Adam is going to be here any minute, so at least try not to fight."

"You had him come here?" Sirius said. "Do you want him to kill us?"

"Look if I know anything about him, he has a loyalty to his friends, and would never turn on them."

"You sure about that?"

"I'm absolutely sure."

"That's nice of you." Came an echo from nowhere. Adam popped out of nowhere and plopped down on the couch, wearing his usually dark outfit.

"Hey, you here to claim your moocher of the year award?" Sirius said with a sarcastic tone.

"Want me to snap that other arm of yours?"

"Just like old times." Dorian said.

Lorelei (already in a bad mood) grabbed a hold of both of them by the collar and dragged them into her indoor garden and shut the door. For a few minutes it was silent, and then came the blood curdling screams, along with a little yelling and what sounded like a bones snapping. Most likely she was threatening to feed them to her two humongous man eating roses.

"Cesca shouldn't you be helping Sirius? He is your fiancé." Devan said.

"No. He needs the fear put into him once in awhile. Besides Lorelei flowers are harmless……after their fed. Then they're just carnivorous vicious meat eating plants." She answered.

"Oh. How did you know?"

"The one thing that Adam fears the most is her flowers. Every single flower in her collection is in someway deadly."

The doors opened and Adam and Sirius came out both looking scared out of their minds. Lorelei's hair was a light blue now. She was in a better mood.

"Now we can talk like the rational people we are, right?" She said sharply.

"Of course just keep those things away from me." Adam answered.

"I'll keep it simple. Devan needs a teacher, your going to teach her, or you get digested by my flowers."

"Simple enough. When should I start?"

"Now."

"Okay. Let's go train D.D."

Devan gave him a puzzled look.

"D.D?" she said.

"Yeah. Your middle name it's Dodie. Your name is Devan. So you're D.D." he explained.

"How do you know that?"

"Your mom and I were partners for about 6 years. I think I would know."

"Right. What's my mom's nickname?"

"M&M, because her middle name is Melissa."

Devan found this odd. Her mother never told anyone her middle name. Yet this person who claims they knew her knows about it.

Adam showed her out of the mansion. She followed him out into the woods. She just noticed he had been carrying a pine wood box under his arm. Now she started getting nervous. They had come into an open area with no trees. He opened the box and tossed her a rapier.

"Were going to fence? Shouldn't we be wearing something to protect ourselves?" she asked.

"No. You'll be fine. I'll go easy on you. It's been awhile since I've done this." He answered. He picked up his sword and quickly stabbed her in the stomach and pulled it out. "I'm still pretty slow."

"Why did you just do that!?" she yelled. She gripped at her stomach and felt the blood ooze out. "Are you crazy?"

"Check your stomach."

Devan pulled up her shirt just enough to see her stomach and saw the gash in her stomach. It was slowly healing, until it was nothing more than a scar.

"You didn't feel any pain did you?"

"No. I didn't. I didn't hurt at all."

"You're a half demon now. Getting stabbed in the stomach won't hurt you." He pointed the sword toward her chest. "I can't say the same for your heart though. You'll learn soon enough. Now let's fight and see how good you are."

On the other side of town Jezebel was in a coffee shop with Julius. She was furious. Instead of killing Devan, Adam started to train her. Julius was sitting across from her in the restaurant. Despite hearing the news he was calm.

"Julius, how can you be so calm? You of all people should know how serious this is." She said.

"And how is that going to help if we panic. We can't confront Adam without walking away unscathed." He answered.

"I agree with you, but it's bad enough that mostly everyone wants you stopped we don't need a vampire/demon killing machine after you."

"He's not completely invincible everything has a weakness, and I know his."

Julius got up and paid for the check with Bell following right behind him. In the booth next to them a girl about 16 yrs. old was listening in on their conversation. She was typing on a laptop, while drinking coffee. She had dark chocolate eyes, with long caramel hair that was typed up in a ponytail, and light skin.

"Hm." She said to herself. "Adam what have you gotten yourself into this time?"

"Svet is everything okay?" asked a young man. He sat down across from her holding a slice of chocolate cake on a plate. He looked about 18 and had short pale white curly hair. He had blood red eyes, with pale skin.

"Just some more stuff from my 'fratello'. It's nothing new Nathan."

"What has he done now?"

"He's training Minerva's daughter."

"Is that really considered a moral dilemma?'

"No, maybe the Conscience Board will overlook it."

Her laptop started to make a beeping sound. Devan and Adam's picture popped up along with their profiles.

"I guess it is considered a moral dilemma. I'll see you later then."

"Yeah, yeah. Enjoy your cake." She said sarcastically.

Then Nathan's pager went off. "Or not."

He checked the small screen and it read 'Dorian'.

"I suddenly get the feeling this is Jera's way of payback." He said.

"Looks like were both going to suffer."

Back in the forest Devan was sitting on the ground covered in cuts and bruises. Adam was bandaging her arm up. Devan couldn't keep up with him which resulted in her getting hurt.

"Well your not as fast as your mother, but you did okay." He commented.

"Thanks I guess." She answered.

After that it was quiet between them and Devan didn't utter a word. She was in a little pain, but she was going to be fine. She was hoping he'd be a little easy on her. "What was your relationship to my mom?"

He looked up at her in surprise. He smirked at her.

"It was anything but platonic." He finished patching up her arm and sent her back to the mansion. She pondered his response and hoped it wasn't what she thought.

Adam stayed behind and gathered up the swords. While he wasn't looking Svetlana materialized behind him. She gave him a burning look that seemed to go through his skull. He turned around not the least bit surprised.

"Sis." he said. " On another mission for the 'conscience' board?"

"Yes, unfortunately. Sometimes I hate this job. I cant sit down and relax without getting a notice about a client has a moral dilemma."

"Must be pain. Why don't you switch departments? You can go back to being field agent if you want. They'll welcome back with open arms."

"No. The killing got to me only after my third year of working there. I wasn't meant for that job."

"At least you tried." She gave him a sad smile and chuckled. "What's so funny?"

"Minerva and Devan. They're so much a like. I can see why you like her."

"What? I don't like her. She's nice, but thats it."

"So false alarm?"

"Yeah sorry."

"Jera, hates me. I just know it."

Jera is a witch, who can be very....cruel. She's considered the tallest witch in the magic community and the most vindictive. She has many colleagues but few close friends. Lorelei just happens to be one of them. Worse part is that she is a Valkyrie making her very powerful.

"I don't think so. She's been in a bad mood lately ever since Minerva died. They were practically sisters."

"Anyway Paxon stopped by the office today. He left a message saying he isn't going to be home in time for dinner. Rogue werewolf."

"Maybe Jera does hate you guys."

"Bye. See you at dinner." Then she slowly faded away into thin air.

Many of the agents in the field have been working overtime in the past few months. Julius, being very persuasive, was able to convince different species to help him achieve his goal in return they would become stronger. Jera is the head of the mission department. She oversees all the different departments missions.

Meanwhile in the other realm at the agency, Jera is in her office, she just fell asleep on her desk. Her long black hair covered her dark face. Her office is full of stacks of papers and books. She's been working overtime for the last few moths. Also there are signs of tears on her papers of her desk. She had just had to sign 10 checks to the families of the agents that died while in the field.

A light tapping comes from the door, and she sits up quickly and rubs her eyes to get rid of tear streaks. She organizes her desk really quickly and pulls her hair back.

"Come in." she says tiredly. Her assistant Jamie walks in, also very tired. She's a little short but has a light brown hair with that goes down to her shoulders. She wears glasses that covered up her amber eyes. Her fox ears were drooped down which signified how tired she was.

"Well more requests for backup, updated reports and your afternoon Kahlua drink." she said. She walked over to her desk set some papers ,and a tall glass of alcohol down.

"Thanks Jamie. I don't know what I would do without you."

"Probably starve. Paxon called in. He said he's going to need another delivery of silver bullets, werewolf cure, a clean up crew, and backup."

"I swear. He goes through bullets like candy. Approve the requests for the bullets, the medicine, and the clean up crew."

"What about the back up?" Jera gave her a long stern look.

"Reject it."she said coldly.

"Jera, I know you've never really liked Paxon, but he could really use the help."

"Jamie, everyone is spread very thin right now. We've already lost 10 agents, and I can't afford to take anyone off the their cases. Paxon will just have to get along with himself."

"Okay. Yes ma'am." She turned to leave until she heard Jera stop her.

"Jamie, did you ever find anything on about what happened to Minerva?"

"Yes, but you'll never never believe me though."

"What did you find?"

"According to files Nathan was the 'reaper' on the day that she died."

"And?"

"Nathan never mentioned anything about helping her soul to the other side in his report." Jera started to go pale. Her purple eyes were filled with surprise and fear. "Currently right now, no one knows what happened to her soul."

"NO! That can't be. Nathan would never mess up like that!" She yelled. Electricity started to crackle out of her hands. She beckoned for Jamie to come over.

"No one outside of this agency is to know about it."

"But your superiors will want a re-"

"I said no one! Burn the files if you have to! If this leaks to Julius can you imagine what he would do?"

"Yes Ma'am."
