Chapter 4: A tragic tale of demonic possession and death

The newfound friends got off of Hyowaphesant's back and set foot on the grounds of the forest. It was 1:00 P.M. in the morning, and everyone was tired. Alex and Katy had been chatting for a while, hitting it off pretty well.

"Did I ever tell you and Zalbek I'm a sorceress?" asked Katy. Katy's sister yawned, then, after having processed what Katy had said, Amy was astonished.

"You're about to tell these two random hooligans a deep dark secret like that, but you never even bothered to tell your own sister?" asked Amy. Katy laughed.

"Well, you did always wonder how I disappear from time to time. I reckon I'll disappear and go home right now" said Katy. Katy vanished. Everyone was in shock, but especially Amy.

"I have no idea how my sis just did what she did" said Amy.

"I want to learn how to disappear some day" said Alex. Amy turned towards Alex, wrinkled up her nose, and made an angry expression at him.

"I hope you DO learn how to disappear blue haired boy. You threatened to freeze your own best friend, and I saw you write that note that told the ogres false things about us that made them angry. The ogres almost ended the lives of me and my sister because of that stupid thing you did! And I commend Zalbek for trying his best to stop you from doing that"said Amy.

"I have no idea what you're talking about" said Alex.

"Yes, you do, don't play dumb" said Amy. Alex got angrier.

"I haven't the slightest clue what you're talking about! Now leave me alone" said Alex, heading off into the woods. Zalbek told Amy to keep calm, and that he would work things out with his friend. He followed Alex deep into the woods, and cornered him near a tree. Alex was sitting under the tree looking extremely depressed.

"What's wrong Alex? You threatened to kill me. Something about you changed, I saw a weird look in your eyes when you were battling those ogres" said Zalbek. Alex got very angry.

"LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE, STUPID EARTH MAGE! Let me recover from this thing inside me!" shouted Alex.

"What thing? What are you talking about?" asked Zalbek shaking Alex. Zalbek saw a strange orb of light ascend out of his body. The strange look in Alex's eyes was no more.

"What's wrong Alex? You threatened to kill me. Something about you changed, I saw a weird look in your eyes when you were battling those ogres" said Zalbek. Alex got very angry.

"God damn it, LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE, STUPID EARTH MAGE! Let me recover from this thing inside me!" shouted Alex.

"What thing? What are you talking about?" asked Zalbek shaking Alex. Zalbek saw a strange orb of light ascend out of his body. The strange look in Alex's eyes was no more.

"You can tell me anything Alex, we're best friends" said Zalbek. Alex let out a heavy breath, and finally, after much pressure from Zalbek, began to talk about what was afflicting him.

"What if I was to tell you that while under this possession, I took the life of my own brother?"said Alex. Zalbek gasped in horror.

"That's horrible. I didn't know you had a brother, but, well, err, it wasn't you that killed him. Your true self must really feel sad and miss him. I know this evil spirit isn't you Alex. You helped me defeat the evil demon minions of Mezbog, remember? When I was battling them, you picked up a sword and joined the fight. You have a good heart. You can get through this, I know you can" said Zalbek.

"Okay, well, see, my brother and I were playing around with our magic powers one day, it was a simple game of Ice, Fire, Wizards, you know, like rock paper scissors only with magic. My brother was a fire mage. Since by default, there's no real way ice can beat fire, the only way I win is to block his magic abilities and freeze him. Normally, when I do this, I immediately unfreeze him afterwards. But something dark and sinister came over me, like something that goes bump in the night, but get this? It was broad daylight" said Alex.

"No way! Keep going," said Zalbek, eating caramel popcorn and listening.

"Before I froze him, my brother and I were quarreling about whether or not the world would end, and whether Jafistaward's prophecy of the doom lords was true. I was insisting that it was true, and he was telling me it wasn't. It was one of our most intense magic battle sessions we had ever had. Finally, I froze him out of anger before he got a chance to beat my ice energy with fire, and I watched him in his frozen state and felt triumphant"said Alex.

"Yes, go on!" said Zalbek.

"Then, all of a sudden, it happened. It came. I felt the orb overcome me, and it pushed me to the ground. When I got up and saw my frozen brother, I felt tremendous apocalyptic power in me, I felt like I could bring about the end of the world, I didn't know what the power was, and I had to release it, so I let out an energy blast, and it sent a wave of raw pure magic energy that sent my frozen brother off the cliff we usually play near. He landed in the river, and I couldn't do anything to save him, because of the demon inside me" said Alex, crying and sobbing loudly.

"I need to get you to an exorcist, and fast" said Zalbek. Alex continued to sob louder.

"I don't want an exorcist, I just want my brother back. And it gets worse, Zalbek, it gets worse" said Alex, as he reached for a leaf to use as a tissue.

"My brother isn't really dead. Well, that is, he is, and he isn't! I witnessed the most horrifying event take place, you would not believe what happened" said Alex. Zalbek continued listening. "One hour later, I was in these exact woods, and I saw from behind two bushes, that two strange beings had gotten ahold of the corpse of my brother"

"What did they look like?" asked Zalbek.

"I didn't really get a chance to see them, their faces were concealed in veils. They began using dark magic to extract my brother's original soul, and then, I saw them insert one of those orbs into his body. Oh, yes, those orbs. I overheard the beings talking about how the orbs were artificial duplicates of their own corrupted souls being inserted into other people, should they be destroyed and need backup versions of themselves. The orb they used was similar to the one that possessed me, only I wasn't dead, so I didn't become a zombie. But my brother did, oh yes he did, and then I heard them chanting, and talking about how I was next, that they needed both me and my brother to become zombies, so we could fulfill the prophecy of the doom lords and destroy Archazia, should they fail or need a stronger army of undeads! They went on to say that they would turn everyone in the world into a zombie in order to create an army of evil undead monsters seeking the ruins of souls. It's here, the darkness is back in Archazia again, it's horrible," explained Alex.

"Woah, that's heavy" said Zalbek. "But you know what? I've read the prophecy of the doom lords, and it assumes that the future is set in stone, and the people that believe that prophecy worship the false deity known as Mezbog, whom both of us defeated. This is it Alex! This will be our next quest. If we can defeat the followers of Mezbog once, we can do it again! It's gonna be okay Alex, we might even be able to save your brothers soul and get him back!"Zalbek comforted Alex, and he finally got up on his feet. Then they looked behind a bush and noticed that Amy had been listening to them the entire time.

"That was a sad story" said Amy. "I want to join you two on your quest to defeat the Doom Lords" said Amy.

"Sure you can!" said Zalbek, handing Amy one of the weapons he had acquired on his first adventure. It was a magical fairy wand. Then Zalbek pulled out his sword from his sheath, bravely cut through the thickets and bushes, and led the way, as the trio ventured deeper into the woods.
