the sun beams grace lily skin,
burned by their touch, the eyes begin to water,
crying tears wishing for rain.

the smell of flowers, cut grass,
it suffocates the lungs, causing headaches
and nightmares of the lush tropics.

silly fears, silly summer days,
inhale, exhale, inhale again,
it's never enough to rain.

the heat waves, stronger than the a/c,
sweat pours, but the skin is still smudged with dirt
and the remnant of winter.

lily skin, pale and shocking,
afraid of the sun, afraid to live.
oh, why won't it rain?
