Wedding Dress

Prologue

Lydia could feel her heart beating in her ears as she ran. She turned around and was relieved to see that no one was behind her for once. The wind fluttered through her short hair and her feet thumped softly in the dirt. She had to keep going. It would be at most twenty minutes before they found out she was gone.

It had been her grandfather's wish that his friendship with his old war friend, Guppy, would be sealed by having one of their children marry the other. As it turned out, they were both blessed with sons. But, this did not ruin their plans. It was decided that this pact would be fulfilled by their grandchildren.

However, her grandfather passed away before he had a chance to see his request answered. And ever since then, Guppy was determined to grant his best friend's wish before he himself was to leave this earth too. For that reason, the day Guppy was admitted to the hospital because of a small slip down the stairs, the wedding was scheduled to be on Sunday of that same week.

Sure, she was eighteen. But Guppy was a clever old man. Not only did every airline, busline, and taxiline know her name and face, but he had bodyguards all over the area, which had made running away impossible. But really, the thought of facing Nathan Beckett for the first time in four years at the altar made her want to puke. He was three years older than her and a cocky playboy. This was her last chance.

"Hey! There she is!"

She glanced behind her to see two tall men in tuxedos running after her. She bit her lip. They were faster than Guppy's usual surly bodyguards who had been tailing her this week.

"Hurry up, Seb! She's getting away. You're so slow!"

"Nate, shut up!"

She rolled her eyes when she recognized the voices and continued running. It was the jester and the groom himself.

Her feet began to ache and so did her chest, but she pressed on, tightly gripping the skirts of her wedding dress. She would not give in.
