She knew from the moment the little plus sign appeared on the test she took her world was going to change. It went from just the two of them and the dog, to preparing to welcome a new person home. Over the months as her body changed, so did her marriage. Her husband went from the loving relaxed man she met and had been through so much with to overbearing and beyond protective.
"Damn it all to hell, can you just leave me alone for five minutes. I just need to pee, it's not like I'm going to deliver the baby in that time," she huffed trying to slam the door in her husbands face.
"You're nine months pregnant, your doctor said this afternoon that it could happen at any time. I just want to be there for you, what don't you get about that?" he asked.
"I don't need you wiping my vagina or my ass. I am a grown woman, now this demon spawn that is lodging his foot in my ribcage by all means wipe his ass when he comes out." She spat slamming the door in his face.
Later that night she awoke with a start. She and her husband had gone to bed angry with each other, for only the second time in her marriage. She looked to his side of the bed only to find it empty and the sheets cold.
When she stood she felt the rush of warm fluid down her legs. She had become accustomed to only wearing his button up shirts to bed, they were the only thing that fit over her belly, and underwear annoyed her to the ends of the earth. Immediately she knew her bag of water had broke and the back pain she had after their fight wasn't just her anger manifested.
"Shit, motherfucker," she breathed as a contraction hit.
Calling out her husbands name, for a few minutes with no response and checked every room in the house. After checking the garage and noticing his car gone she finally dialed his cell phone just to get his voicemail.
"Seriously?" she screeched before dialing his mother.
"I need you to come get me and take me to the hospital," she cried into the phone when her mother-in-law answered.
"Where's my son?" her mother-in-law asked sleepily.
"No clue, his phone is going to voicemail and his car is gone. Pack up Gracie and get me. Please I don't care if she's there."
"Gracie, wake up sweetpea," her mother-in-law whispered to her four year old daughter. "We gotta go take sissy to the hospital."
"MMMkay," she heard a sleepy voice sigh.
"Honey, I'll be there in 10. Get your bag, and meet me at the door. I'll get someone to track your husband down and make him get his ass there."
Hanging up the phone she went to the closet where her emergency bag was packed and got it out. Nearly falling to the floor with the strength of her last contraction she righted herself and went to at the very least put on a pair of leggings, makeup, and shoes.
After pacing a hole in her living room floor she heard her mother-in-law park in the drive. She grabbed her bag quickly and almost forgot to lock the door behind her in her haste to get out of the house.
"Thank you," she whispered buckling her seatbelt.
"It's okay. I heard your husband was at a bar drinking his sorrows."
Hours later, she felt the biggest relief as her slightly drunk husband made the way through the delivery room doors just as her son's head started to crown.
"I'm so sorry baby," he sobbed, grabbing her hand.
"It's okay," she breathed after a contraction. She had never intended to go without an epidural, but it was just something that had to happen.
"Thanks mom," he said softly, meeting his mother's disapproving gaze.
"Don't say you're sorry to me," she growled before holding back her daughter-in-law's leg.
"Come on, just one more push and the head will be out," he heard the doctor say from the foot of the bed.
"Come on baby, you can do this," he said softly, kissing his wife's hand.
Growling through her contraction, and pushing with all her might she finally felt relief as her son came into this world. Immediately she started sobbing and reached for him to be put on her chest.
"What's his name?" the nurse who was cleaning him up asked.
"Justin Gabriel," she replied softly, stroking his cheek.
