Prologue

Panic.

That was all she could feel… or maybe it was just a hundred different emotions rushing through her body all at once. Hurt, anger, frustration, fear…

"Tell me what to do, please just… don't do this to me, don't leave. Please…" Her voice was quivering, along with the rest of her body. Tears spilled from her eyes like a waterfall, and no matter how hard she tried not to cry, she couldn't.

She was a mess. Her hands and arms were covered in so much blood and dirt that the smell of metal overwhelmed her with nausea, but she willed herself to stay strong and awake. She couldn't afford to pass out. The blood on her hands was after all not hers.

"Please," she begged again, and this time two brightly blue orbs looked straight into her hazel eyes and held her attention to the point where she forgot to breathe for a few seconds. Suddenly, she forgot everything around her, and the gruesome reality seemed to disappear, all because of those cerulean blue eyes that finally found the strength to look back at her.

"I'm sorry," was all he managed to say, but his saddened expression spoke volumes. Their unfinished conversation seemed to continue as fresh new tears escaped down her cheeks.

"Stay with me," she begged. "Just… please stay with me and… I'll even forgive you for all the lies and secrets…"

If he had the strength, he would have laughed, but only the smallest hint of a smile reached his lips, only to disappear into a wince. And just like that, the cruel reality hit her like a ton of bricks. He had lost too much blood. Little by little, she could see how he was slowly fading away from her. Fear and regret glowed in his eyes, mirroring her own as she realized he wasn't going to make it.

"No! Don't do this, not now!" Desperately, she reached for his cheek and forced him to look at her. "Look at me! You're not doing this to me, not after all the shit you've put me through. You're going to be just fine, ok? Just stay with me. I need you to stay with me." Her voice was hard and firm, masking the panic behind her momentarily fake calm.

"I need you," she finally admitted.

Looking into his eyes, she saw how desperate he wanted to tell her something in return, but his low, uneven breath hindered him from speaking. Instead, he managed to find the strength to reach for her cheek and wipe away a single tear, but the gesture only backfired as more seemed to come.

"It was real, Cass... all of it," he whispered breathlessly, knowing it would be his last words. He knew she would understand and decipher that one sentence into all the things he had wished to tell her, but sadly hadn't been able to.

One day, she would understand.
