It's another typical day at math class. Tommy's already asleep in the very back of the room, with his head down. Jason is flying paper airplanes. Kassandra is doing her nails. The teacher has his back turned to the class, writing some weird formula on the board that I've never even seen before. And me? I'm just trying to keep myself occupied so I don't fall asleep like Tommy over there in the corner. This was the daily routine. You're probably thinking that this is a lame school and you're right, sort of. Although the rules seem kind of laid back, at least there aren't any gangs or crazy kids bringing in guns. So here I am, trying to understand the crap the teacher is writing on the board when the door suddenly flies in and in steps the new kid. Tall around 5'7", black hair that was neck-length, and dressed in black. As soon as he walked into the room, the teacher's attitude changed. The two of them had a little talk outside the classroom. The next thing I knew, I'm walking to the principal's office with the new kid. We walk into the principal's office and I see the secretary, Marina, typing away at the computer.
"Hi Marina," I said as I sat down in a chair to wait.
"Hi Joyce." I used to help out in the office a lot so the two of us knew each other well. Plus, she was also my mom's childhood friend.
"So, how are you? How's your mom?"
"I'm okay. Nothing special about mom." I waited for about 5 minutes before I could see the principal. I almost forgot about the new kid who had been very quiet ever since we got here.
"Hey Principal Leslie. How are you today?" I asked.
"Fine, thank you. Now Joyce, do you know why you've been called here?"
"No. Uh…Am I in trouble or something?"
"No, no. Nothing of that sort. Firstly, have you met Jonathan?" He directed my attention to the kid sitting next to me.
"Uhh…no, not really."
"Well, he's new here and I would really appreciate it if you'd let him follow you around the school for the next couple of days. You know, to get used to the rules and stuff."
"But Principal Leslie, why me? Why can't somebody else do it?"
"Well, you're one of our finest students so we believe you'll take full responsibility for this job. Besides, Jonathan requested you to be his guide." My eyes widened. 'Why would this total stranger want to follow me around all day?' After arguing with the principal for another minute or so, I finally gave in. I walked out of the principal's office feeling defeated.
"Hey. Can you slow down a little bit?" The boy finally spoke. I turned to face him.
"Now you listen here. There should be at least a 3 ft distance between us so no one realizes that I'm showing you around the school. Secondly, I'm not walking fast, this is my normal pace. So if you want to keep up with me, you better walk faster. That's all that I can come up with right now. If I come up with any more rules, I'll be sure to state them, got it?" The dude gave me this look that read 'Are you serious?' Ignoring him, I continued walking.
