It is not my duty, nor my right,
to bless a person—for day and night
were created by the utmost He
(whose miracles, too, created me),
and I venture not to usurp claim
for wonders rightfully due His name.
So beg your pardon if some silence
trails your sneeze (ousted with great violence),
for I do not wish you any ill—
but that healthy void is His to fill;
and those germs you curse, from nasal burst,
descend from those He created first.
