CHAPTER ONE:
MIRANDA'S POV
The annoying sound of the alarm clock made me wake up, and cringe under the sheets. Under my white down comforter, I could see the sunlight coming through the fibers. Why does Rachel always have to turn the alarm clock on? It's summer for Pete's sake!
And then it hit me. The concert tonight. Grinning under the sheets now, I imagined what would happen at the concert tonight. My favorite band was preforming at a local club tonight. What makes it better is that Rachel and I are going. Rachel and I were planning to go shopping for the concert tonight this afternoon. After taking a deep, long breath, I reached out blindly and turned off the nasaly sound of the alarm clock.
"Miranda, you awake yet?" I heard Rachel call down the hallway.
"No, I'm just talking in my sleep." I muttered back. I heard her heels click against the hard wood floor. CLICK CLICK CLACK. I could tell she was at the doorway of my bedroom. I didn't attempt to move, I wanted to reserve my last few precious moments of rest before I got ready for the day.
"Hurry up sleepy head. It's already ten-thirty." She told me. I groaned, and threw off the covers, and covering my eyes from the light of the window. Why did I have to put my bed directly under the window? I should of known better, since it is California.
Rachel sighed, as she continued down the hallway, her heels clicking quieter till it was just the sound of my old style clock ticking on the wall. Staring up at the ceiling, I looked up at the glow-in-the-dark stars and planets. I know I'm a nerd. An eighteen year old, straight out of high school, living with her best friend near the beach, and having glow-in-the-dark stickers.
Finally making myself get out of bed, I went to my iHome, and flicked it onto my favorite band. So excited! I kept smiling, realizing it was the day. I started pulling on some short shorts, and a red and white striped t-shirt. I usually would be afraid to look in the mirror in the morning, but nothing to ruin my day. Not anything.
I danced around my room a bit, getting my body and mind ready for the day. "She calls me sweetheart!!" I sang loudly, not caring that my window was open. Jack and Ryan wouldn't care, my next door neighbors. They've seen me do worse. Well not like THAT.
"Hey Miranda!" I heard Ryan call from outside. Laughing, I replied hi, peeking out from my window.
"Going to the concert tonight?" He asked me, from his back porch.
"What do you think I've been talking about for the past week?" I said, rolling my eyes. He laughed, before starting to pick up some cups and plates from around his hot tub. His sandy blond hair was a bit messed, and he was wearing his glasses. Probably one of the days that he didn't bother to wear his contacts.
"You going?" I asked. He nodded. I asked him if he needed a ride.
"Actually, I was going to ask if you if you and Rachel wanted a ride with me, Jack, and Chris." He admitted, laughing.
Grinning, I replied that Rachel and I could carpool with them. Closing the window, I went to the bathroom, and blushed. My medium-height hair was a mess like usual. When I was getting dressed, I had pulled it into a messy pony. My green eyes were wide awake, after all the dancing and laughing.
I decided to do my normal morning routine with my makeup and hair. Some natural makeup, and having my hair down, in loose waves.
"Wanna stop by Starbucks?" Rachel said, coming into the bathroom as I was curling my lashes.
"Duh." I snorted. Rachel had jet black hair, and large blue eyes. All my friends tell me I have large eyes, but I still like trying to make them bigger. After doing my preparation stuff, I went into the small kitchen, and stole an apple from the fruit basket on the counter. It smelt like lemon in our kitchen. Rachel probably cleaned it this morning. She's a freak like that, but I love her as a friend. I hate cleaning.
Light dominated the entire house in the mornings. It's practically impossible to find a dark space in our small beach house. I could hear the waves crashing onto the shore quietly in the background. It was nice having a house on the beach, that if we wanted to, run into the ocean whenever we wanted. Way better than back in my home town up in Canada. No warm ocean beaches there!
As I was looking at my cellphone, I realized I had a missed call from Mom. Eh, I'll call her later, maybe while we're shopping. When I flicked through my missed text messages, I realized I had one from Max that he sent late last night.
To: Miranda From: Max
Hey Raz! We haven't talked in forever! :) we should meet up somewhere and talk! :)
I groaned, and smacked my phone on the counter quite forcefully. Rachel came in, and appraised the expression on my face.
"Sorry. I just got a text from Max." I replied, slinging my purse over my shoulder. She stole a water bottle from the cabinet, and we were out the door. I hadn't put on my golden gladiator shoes on fully, so when I sat in the driver's seat, I quickly tightened them.
"LET'S GO! WOOT!" Rachel yelled, clearly excited for the concert tonight. She flipped on her sunglasses, and I took mine off the dashboard. Putting them on me, I quickly checked my face in the mirror and started the car.
Sounds of ALL TIME LOW filled our small car, as we drove away from the curb and down the street. I looked around, and was still awed at the scenery. Rachel and I have been living here for a couple months, and I still feel like I'm on vacation. I saw a few kids wearing swim suits, excited for the beach that awaited for them.
"Are we meeting up with anyone at the mall?" I asked, turning into the mall parking lot. Rachel giggled. I sighed, and looked over at her.
"Who is it this time?"
"They just arrived here. A group of guys from Baltimore. I met up with one, Christian, and he's super sweet. And HOT!" Rachel laughed.
"And we're meeting up with Christian today?"
"Yep. And he says he might be bringing along his friends." Rachel replied, wagging her eyes. I smacked her.
"I'm single, and I don't want anyone to change that." I exclaimed proudly. Rachel snorted, making me playfully smack her on the arm. I parked into an empty spot, and we grabbed our stuff.
"Yeah, I'm supposed to meet him in the food court like in.....crap, I'm late. Can you grab the cappuccinos for me? I don't want him to think I ditched him," Rachel asked me. I sighed and waved her off.
"It's fine!" I replied, shutting my door. She ran off, making sure she didn't get hit by a car. I still had my sunglasses on, since it was already a pretty hot day. By the looks of at the cars in the parking lot, it was a busy day at the mall.
Walking into Starbucks, smells of coffee and chocolate filled my nose, making me feel more clear and alive. It was a bit crowded, I had to say "excuse me" to a few people a couple times. It took me about five minutes to get to the front of the line. Rachel and I've been here so many times, the worker's know our name, no joke.
"Okay, that will be $7.75 please." John the barista said, smiling. It felt so nice being in California, where it was all sunshine and smiles. And cute boys, to add. I handed him the change, and grabbed the two coffees. The next person was starting to order, so I tried to quickly get out of the small coffee store.
Turning too quickly, I accidentally crashed into a guy. Since the coffees were at chest level, I dropped one of them, and it came crashing towards the floor. People tried to avoid the splatter, but some people got unlucky and got their legs a bit wet.
"Crap! I'm so sorry!" I rambled, trying to get some napkins. Keeping my head down, I tried to keep my face from turning red.
"No, it's my fault. Sorry." He replied back, in a calming voice. Looking up, I realized I was right at his eye level, since he was picking up the empty coffee cup. I stopped breathing for a moment, caught up in his eyes. It was a deep chocolate brown, and breathtaking, hence the "stopped breathing" part. Of course he couldn't see my eyes, since I had the sunglasses on.
"It's my fault...." I tried to say, but he laughed a bit, that made me melt. Other costumers made an area for my "mess", so we had some space.
"No, no, no, it's mine. Let me buy you another drink." He said. The way he said it, I knew he wouldn't budge. All I could do was smile and say thanks. He was technically in line, since he was also buying a newspaper. A few of the new barista's came and had to clean up my little accident. Blushing, I went and sat down by an empty table, and looked at the guy who was looking at me in line.
He was a bit tan, not the tan salon kind, like natural spend-time-outside tan. He was a bit muscular, his muscles showing a bit in his v-neck t-shirt. He wore cargo shorts, and flip flops. He looked laid back, and when I realized that he was wondering why I was staring at him, I glanced away embarrassed. He smiled, and I noticed his teeth were brilliant against his tan skin. Not being able to control it, I smiled too.
TRISTAN'S POV
She was amazing. Her long brown hair was a bit wavy, and it cascaded down till the middle of her back. She was wearing mid-thigh shorts. Definitely not the slut shorts, but ones that just show some skin. She was wearing a red and white striped COKE t-shirt, that clung to her body. She probably plays sports. Surfing maybe? I wish she would take off her sunglasses, I was dying to see her eyes.
How stupid I was, crashing into her! I probably sounded like a rambling retard trying to pick up the empty cup that I made her drop. The least I could do was buy her another drink. Even though I was late for my friend too at the mall, I didn't want her to leave.
After paying for my purchases, I walked over to her at the table, and handed her the cup. She mumbled thank you, and I could tell she was kind of embarrassed. She was looking out at the glass windows, towards the mall. Sort of bummed, I asked her if she needed to go somewhere.
"Oh, it's just that I'm supposed to meet up with my friend like, five minutes ago." She said. I nodded, and then I asked what her name was. She looked a bit surprised, like this has never happened to her. She looked kind of young. Maybe eighteen or nineteen.
"Oh, um, my name's Miranda." She said. What a beautiful name.
"Mines Tristan. Tristan Gaskarth." I said, a bit nervous.
"That's a cool name. Gaskarth. Well I'm really sorry, but I have to leave." She mumbled, slinging her purse over her shoulder again. She looked like she was in a hurry, but she kept glancing at me.
"Oh, okay. Well I'm sorry about the accident. I hope the replacement's just as good." I smiled. The corner of her mouth turned up a bit, and amusement played in her eyes.
"See ya, Tristan." She said, before walking out the door. I just stood there by the exit, watching her quickly walk towards the entrance of the mall. It's my first afternoon here and I've already fallen head over heels of a girl I don't even know.
MIRANDA'S POV
Walking quickly towards the mall doors, I could feel his eyes watching me. It wasn't creepy or weird, it was kind of cute. I really didn't expect him to buy me a new drink that he spilled. Walking past Abercrombie & Fitch, Foot Locker, Dollarama, and Apple, I finally got to the escalator. I saw the guy, Tristan, walking towards the entrance of the mall.
I started to have weird feelings in my stomach. Not nausea, it felt too good for that. More like butterflies. I laughed quietly at myself on the escalator. Such high school feelings like butterflies....
When I got to the food court, I spotted Rachel sitting at a table in the middle of the group of tables, with a mysterious boy beside her, laughing.
"Rachel!" I called, catching her attention. She smiled and waved me over. When I got over to the table, I sat down, and Rachel introduced me to Christian.
"Pleasure to meet you," I smiled. Christian grinned, and replied "thanks, you too."
Christian had blond hair and blue eyes. Typical range for Rachel. She liked the type of Abercrombie & Fitch model guys, who wears polo shirts and canvas shoes. I didn't really know who I was into. I just knew that I wanted someone for my own who won't break my heart like Max did.
We started talking about the beach, when Christian spotted someone behind me, and waved them over. I didn't really mind, since I was drinking a bit of my cappuccino. Christian stood up, and walked behind me.
"Girls, let me introduce you to my friend Tristan." Christian said, making my eyes widen. Slowly turning around in my seat, I saw Christian's arm draped over Tristan Gaskarth's shoulder.
Rachel giggled and said, "and guess what? They'll be living 5 houses away from us on the beach for two weeks! Won't that be just awesome Miranda?!"
