why is it so hard to say goodbye

today of all days
I know the answer
is in the year's turning
all this time the earth has been inching

while we ran
while we laughed
while we cried

and in this rotation
the grooves on our record
scratch and we find reasons
we've never known before
sounds you can only hear
when you've tried to hang on

I drag my hands over these lands
I walk the valleys, the mountains
the path that may take me to you

season in season out
the year will turn again
and we will find this day again
I can not say what it will hold
only that I choose not to cower
to see instead the promise
the adventure of an unknown future

even footprints fade
the path we were changes
constants become variables
the land is silent
