Chapter 2: New Confusion
The class was at its noisiest, as usual, and as soon as I entered the classroom, I made my way to the corner in the classroom where I usually sat. I stopped about half way there, though, because my seat was already occupied. It wasn't anyone I knew, though.
As though sensing me staring at him, he looked up. Then he got up and came towards me.
"Hi," he said as he approached. "I'm Luke." He outstretched his hand.
Awkwardly, I gave it a quick shake. "Sora," I replied.
"I'm new," he said after an awkward silence of a few seconds.
"I realised as much," I smiled and tried to get past him to my desk. Great, new guy on my birthday.
"Happy Birthday, Sora."
I turned slowly to face the new guy again. How does he know-
"I saw your name on the birthday list," he shrugged and went to talk with some other guys in the class.
In physics, the teacher was getting on my nerves. I sat next to Amy, who wasn't that good at physics, and I would help her out because I knew what was going on most of the time.
The teacher, Ms Dirny, asked Amy a spot question to see if she understood. I happened to cough just before Amy gave her answer and Ms Dirny accused me of giving her the answer because Amy had answered correctly. I denied it but she asked me to see her after class.
"I know that you know the work," she began, "but others in this class don't and I don't want you giving them the answers because then they won't understand."
I nodded my head. If I told her that I hadn't helped Amy, then she would accuse me of lying, but if I just kept quiet, then she could just finish her lecture and I would be on my way.
"Then again," she said, interrupting my train of thought. "Maybe Amy did know the answer."
Huh?
"She is getting better at physics." She stood silently for a moment then said I could go.
At break, Amy was waiting for me at our usual spot under the trees. The rain had stopped for a breather and the clouds seemed to be slowly dispersing.
"Ms Dirny can be such a pain at times," she said as we walked to the tuckshop.
"I know," I replied. Luke was in the queue at the tuckshop and we waited behind him.
"It was nice how she believed you, though, that you didn't help me."
I stared at her, "How did you know–" I hadn't told her that yet.
"Didn't you say just now that she's not that bad because she believed you?"
Luke was now looking back and forth between us, confusion evident on his face, yet at the same time, he looked slightly shocked.
"No," was my immediate response. "Yes... maybe... I don't know." What's going on? I pushed my way out of the queue and leaned against a wall, trying to contain my emotions.
Soon, I noticed Luke standing in front of me, holding a Bar One.
"Want some?" he asked indicating the chocolate in his hand.
I shrugged and he broke off a piece and gave it to me.
"Thanks."
"What's wrong?" he asked, taking a bite of the chocolate.
"Oh, nothing," I said.
"Then how come you look so down on your birthday?" was his next question.
What was his case. Couldn't he see that I wanted to be alone for a bit? "I'm just cold," I answered. "Amy is probably looking for me." I pushed past him and headed back to the queue to find her.
"You're not alone," I heard Luke say.
I turned back to ask what he meant, but he was already talking to some other guys. I was probably just imagining things.
Once Amy had finished clearing out the tuckshop of its toffees, I headed back to the classroom with her. She seemed to have forgotten about the episode with Ms Dirny and I was glad because that was another thing I did not feel like talking about.
She did however have lots of things to say about Luke.
"So, what did he want?" she asked.
"He just gave me a bit of his chocolate," I stated simply.
"But what did he say?" She was starting to bounce a little with excitement.
"You're starting to act like Jess now," I laughed. "He just asked if anything was wrong 'cause I was looking down."
"Well... what did you say?"
"I said I was cold," I replied truthfully.
"Do I have to drag everything out of you?" Amy moaned. "What happened next?"
"Nothing, I came to find you."
Amy stared at me with her jaw almost touching the ground. "A really hot guy comes to you, wants to talk to you and you walk away?" she asked dumbstruck.
"Well... ya, I guess."
She banged her huge general file on her head. "What am I going to do with you, Sor?"
I laughed. It was true that I didn't have much luck with guys, so why was I turning down this one?
"Maybe you're scared?" Amy replied to my train of thought.
"Of...?" I asked. How did she know what I was thinking?
"You know, of getting into a relationship," she replied.
"Hold on a sec," I said, grounding to a halt. "How do you know what I'm thinking?"
"I don't." She looked confused.
"But I didn't say anything and you answered to what I was thinking at the time," I replied.
"Stop getting yourself all worked up," Amy said. "I probably happened to be thinking the same thing as you."
"Ya, probably." We started walking again.
"Just relax," she reassured me. "Two more lessons and we're home-free!" She jumped a little jump of joy and soon I was laughing with her again.
