After he finished cooking and tucking his sister into bed, Jason sat on the couch looking through all the documents of Danni's adoption. He knew that mom adopted her, he was there when she filled out the information, he couldn't understand what was going on. He re-read the paper work over and over again and then looked at the hospital papers from today. She was defiantly biological, but how? He sat back pinching the bridge of his nose and sighed heavily. He really wished he knew more about his father, perhaps then he would know what happened, maybe he got mom pregnant and left and mom was too scared about telling him so she put Danni up for adoption because he had already left one child and more payment of child support would get on his nerves. Maybe his mother sent her to live with relatives, but then why would she not tell him about it? He was so confused and he just wanted to figure it out. Looking through the old photographs of when Danni was so little, he saw no resemblance of the parents, he saw no trace of viable evidence that could completely verify that she was biological, at least not except the doctors result.
Soft footsteps came down the stairs and Jason turned his head, his dirty blonde hair falling over his green eyes. He tilted his head, he knew Danni had his eyes but her hair color was completely different, she had dark red hair. Her head looked down and she stood there in her pajama's looking sad and when she looked up, her eyes showed some fear in them. "Baby, what's wrong?" He immediately stood and walked over to kneel in front of her.
"I don't like that I can't remember, Jason. I'm scared." She whispered her bottom lip wobbling, he hated when she cried and before she could start he gently ran a thumb soothingly over her flushed cheeks.
"You don't have to be scared, sweetheart. I'm right here and I won't let anything happen to you. You're my little girl." He smiled softly and reached up to run a soothing hand through her hair.
"Jason, how did mom die?" She asked, looking down. "Is it cause of me?"
"Of course not." He said, picking her up and carrying her to her bedroom, the stairs weren't long and she was small for her age. He gently sat her on her bed. "Our mother died because she was in an accident. She was driving and a drunk driver hit her head on. She was dead right away, princess. We went through the foster system for a little while until our aunt picked us up and raised us. When I was 16, I took us out of there, and we've been living on our own ever since. It was a little hard to get to be on our own, judges kept turning us down, and especially because I had a child with me when I was the same. I eventually got approved and since mom had money and a life insurance policy, we had enough to get us by, like we do now."
She listened intently as he explained and nodded, laying down in her bed that was covered in pink sheets, she looked into his eyes. "Will you stay?"
"Yes." He said leaning down to kiss her forehead and looked around, finding a chair in the room, he sat down and watched as her eyes fluttered closed and she fell into a peaceful slumber.
Weeks had passed and Danni was no closer to retrieve her memory, they had talked about the memories a lot but nothing seemed to jog it. She seemed much happier though and more comfortable then the first day he brought her home. School was a little hard to juggle since the material was technically all new to her and so were her friends. Jason had football practice after school and made sure that she was on the bleachers doing her homework. She had always slacked with that and though her memory was gone, she still slacked. The coach was more understanding than he would have thought and that gave him a comforting feeling. When practice had ended, he went to the changing room to take a shower and get dressed in a pair of ripped jeans and white t-shirt. His hair was still wet and he grabbed his backpack, walking out. The bleachers were empty and his eyes filled with worry and a strong knot formed in his stomach.
"Danni!" He shouted, looking around in a panic. He took a running start to the bleachers and looked around. "Danni! Where are you?" His backpack dropped and he looked at her bag that lay on the bleachers opened, all her books and work inside. He turned back toward the locker rooms and burst in. "Kyle! I can't find Danni." He said so fast that Kyle almost didn't catch it.
Kyle had no shirt on and dropped the shirt he was about to put on. "Okay man, calm down." He said taking Jason's arm and pulling him outside. Kyle was tall and he was muscular. He was every girls wet dream.
They both took a look around the place and Kyle squinted. He let go of Jason in a huff and walked toward the parking lot. "Austin, what the fuck do you think you are doing?" Kyle asked sternly, seeing the biggest flirt in school holding Danni's hands.
Jason caught up. "Danielle Sky." He said with a growl. "Get over here, we're leaving." He looked at Austin and pointed. "You're lucky I'm not beating your ass."
"Jason, I-"
"No Danni, you heard me. Now." Jason cut her off and walked over taking her elbow and leading her to his car. "Get in." He said angrily and turned to see Kyle shove Austin into the wall. Jason thanked Kyle and grabbed Danni's bag before getting in the car. "You don't fucking do that. You don't disappear on me like that, especially with another guy. You have amnesia and you could have been hurt!"
He was surprised when she started to cry, Danni usually argued. He really missed the arguing, he didn't want her to cry. Her crying led her to hiccupping and looking down with sniffles. "Danni." Jason said with a sigh, putting a comforting arm around her while they were at a stop light. "It's okay, everything is fine. I am just looking out for you. That guy is a total prick and I don't want him coming in and thinking he can take advantage of you, especially since you can't remember much. I'm worried about that."
Danni looked up with tears in her big green eyes. "I'm sorry." She whispered, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand and dropping both into her lap. Her head leaned against the window and she looked toward the sky. She wished she could remember and she wished that she could fix it so Jason wouldn't be so worried about her. He had told her that the doctor told them it'd be temporary but with the recent visit the man said that it looked like it could become permanent. This made her feel even worse and the look in Jason's eyes made her feel more pain then she could have imagined, it broke her heart completely.
Arriving home, she got out of the car and walked up to the porch. Her hand reached and twisted the handle so she could go inside. The pictures on the walls showed a happy family, her mom and her brother with her. Her and Jason together with big smiles. Jason teaching her how to paint, how to draw, helping her to climb a tree and holding her while she swam. These were all memories that she might never get back. He'd shown her movies of when they were little of every birthday, every memory they could have had. Jason walked in, taking his jacket off and hanging it on the hook. "Come here, baby." He said patting the couch and pulling the remote out. The television splashed into color and another home movie came on. This time Danni was older, into her teen years and she watched as she smiled. Sitting down, she gently grinned.
"Come on, scaredy cat!" Jason called looking toward a lake that had a cliff with a tire swing that let you land in the water. "Watch!" He yelled grabbing onto it and jumping in, she wondered who was behind the camera.
"Jason, I don't want to." She whined, crossing her arms and pouting cutely.
Jason swam toward the bank and ran back up the hill and picked her up, throwing her over his shoulder as she kicked and screamed and squirmed. "Let's go."
"Jason, no!" She yelled fearfully, biting her lip.
Jumping and grabbing onto the rope he took her and listened to her scream and promptly dropped her first. He dropped next and fell in, coming back up and spitting out water, her glare was waiting for him on when he looked over. "It wasn't so bad, ya big baby." He said swimming over and dunking her, she grabbed his leg and pulled him under.
"Jerk!" She yelled upon coming up.
His arms tug at her and wrap her up, kissing her forehead. "I love you, princess." He whispered.
"I love you too, jerk." She said with a glare then a smile lit up her cheeks, they heard a call that dinner was ready and she glanced up at him. "Race ya." She said taking a head start.
"Cheater." He said and swam after her, following and lifting her up. "That wasn't fair." He said tickling her sides as he carried her. She laughed and wiggled, begging him to stop. Reaching the table, he set her down and grabbed her a hot dog. She stuck her tongue out at him and took a bite of her hot dog.
"You're so mean to me." She spoke with the hotdog in her mouth, getting ketchup on her cheek.
He wiped it away with his thumb and smiled. "You love me anyway."
The video cut out and Jason was smiling, remembering the memory. Danni sat back, her memory was blank, causing her to frown. Jason leaned over and kissed her cheek. "I'll make dinner, okay sweetheart?" He got up and walked into the kitchen, and Danni watched until the swinging door stopped moving.
Dinner consisted of her favorite meal, spaghetti with meatballs and garlic bread that melted in your mouth, she had two plates of it, filling her stomach up for the night and she smiled, offering to the dishes before she had to go to bed. She finished and hugged Jason goodnight and went to bed. Laying on her bed, she looked at some photo albums and her eyes filled with tears. She hated not knowing what her previously life was like, not remembering Jason or anyone else. She felt them roll down her cheeks and wiped them before rolling over and letting sleep consume her.
"Jason!" A cry had him rushing up, not bother to grab a t-shirt. He slammed open the door and ran across the hall to Danni's bedroom. "Jaaaaaaaaaaaason!" Another cry.
Jason busted through the door and watched as she rolled around in bed, crying and convulsing. Jason rushed over and grabbed her arms holding them down. "Baby, I'm right here. I'm right here." Her cries for him still washed over her tongue and his ears were burning with the loud noise. "Danni!" He yelled and grabbed her cheeks. "I'm here, princess, I'm right here. I've got you." He said laying his head against hers. "Danni, sweetheart."
Her eyes popped open and she looked at him, tears rolling down her cheeks. "Jason." She whimpered and felt him wrap her up in his arms, they were so tight, but not enough to hurt her.
"Shhhsh, shhhh, it's okay." He ran his fingers through her hair and kissed the top of her hair. "It's okay, baby. What happened?"
