She was given a gift to keep
His memories alive
To hold close to her heart
Until the time came for her to die

--

He left her then
To search lands far and wide
With her gift in hand
She stood strong and wiped the tears she cried

--

The gift was just a necklace
Hung from her neck on a chain
Made of silver and gold
With an enchanted gem to hold her pain

--

But what she did not know
Was that this gift had a tale
Passed down from lovers of old
A curse lay on the wearer if the love was failed

--

Before she knew it
Her luck grew sour
And she began to witness
The effects of the gem's power

--

But she refused to let it go
This gift from her love
Even as she was outcast
And marked by black doves

--

Until on the final day
She wandered in, shaken and worn,
On him…and her
She wanted to flee, but was too torn

--

She watched him hand her a gift
And clip it around her arm
Giving her a good-bye kiss
Before turning and finding her in alarm

--

She ranted and raved
Before pausing and looking to him once more
She clutched her heart and cried out to him
And, with her gift, fell and broke on the floor
