TO FALL
"Why are you so scared," he breathed, staring deep into my eyes. The hair on the back of my neck rose as goose bumps laced my arm. He was just too beautiful. My breath hitched as I stared back into his nothingness, noting the way the city lights swam in his near black irises. I wasn't scared, but I wasn't too eager about plummeting to my death either.
Cautiously, I stepped away from the ledge and Arnold.
"I'm not scared," I told him loudly as if to reinforce the idea in my own head. He chuckled, turning his back towards the ledge so that no light could touch his front. Black wings, almost as black as the night, raised from his back and stretched.
"Then jump," he insisted, holding his hand out before him, giving me a great view of the night (and ledge) before me. Skyscrapers and lights blinded me as I stepped forward. My breath stopping cold as the wind blew, and I felt myself wobble. My stomach didn't like this.
"Alright," I finally decided as I threaded my hands around the golden necklace my father had given me for my twelfth birthday, "I'll do it." Tears began to slip from eyes as I stepped forward yet again, still holding the golden chain. Silently I said a prayer, one that would watch over me and all of my loved ones.
Arnold's cool hands, large in their own right, suddenly fell upon my skin, wiping away the salty liquid.
"No need for that love. Everything will be fine."
I looked up at Arnold, my eyes scanning his, until he finally, finally let me go.
"I'll be here when you're on the other side," he murmured. I could see him shaking, and his eyes bouncing with excitement.
We will finally, truly be together, he said and allowed me a kiss.
I mumbled something barely incoherent, under my breath. My hands fumbling with the necklace my father had given me for my twelfth birthday, which was nearly six years ago. I pulled away.
He sighed. "What?"
"Nothing…just…."
My lips mumbled something for my mind to say but nothing reasonable came out…
"Look Kwiz, if you don't want to jump, and then… fine."
Arnold turned, his black wings glistening in the moon light. I gasped.
"Wait!"
He stopped his foot in the air, seemingly frozen. Turning his face slightly, I watched the tiny devilish smile play on his angelic face, his onyx eyes shining.
"I said I will," my voice came out harshly, "I'll fall for you."
He turned around again, showing off his Cheshire cat grin.
"A bit too late for that, Love."
