A Piece of the Continent

Buried in wooded Spanish hills
under ever restless quiet,
his body has slept fifty years,
deep beneath the hollow mountain.

The sightless eyes, sunken
into his skull, have forgotten
the golden brown grain field of
Maria's hair, bird-like shoulders

quivering as the earth moved beneath her.
But his ribs, still dreaming of spring,
become the root of scarlet flowers
that blossom from his bones, shooting

through the soil to bloom at her feet.
