The whole ceremony I felt as if my body were to explode- and not from happiness like most brides say they feel. No, it was murderous rage that had a hold of me- oh, I would say my 'I do's but just to set Kayden free. I would not spy for the King, I would not share a bed with this man and pretend to care for him to get his secrets. No, I would kill him with my own bare hands. How could the King have done this? And why the hell had Tristan agreed? I'm sure he knew about Kayden and I…why would he trust me? Or maybe that was it, maybe he agreed because he knew he couldn't trust me but he wouldn't be sure about some other girl. But didn't the king know this too? What was going on?
I don't even know how I managed to say everything at the right moment because I was too busy with all these questions but I do know that after I said 'I do' the guards stepped away from Kayden and he left the church. And I'm not going to lie, it hurt to see him go. Part of me had wished that he would grab a sword from a guard and charge to my rescue, killing Tristan and sweeping me off to some magical land…but of course that was just me and my crazy imagination.
"You may kiss the bride." The priest intoned and I felt Tristan lift up my veil.
"You look beautiful." He said as he kissed the corner of my mouth, I just glared. The crowd began to cheer and we walked hand and hand from the church into the reception hall. Even in the state I was in, I noticed how gorgeous the hall was. There were candles and flowers everywhere.
"May I de the first to congratulate you both!" Said the King kissing my hand then slapping Tristan on the shoulder.
"Why didn't you tell me!" I hissed at him. The king laughed and smiled at Tristan,
"My dearest angel, I knew you wouldn't do it."
"I would have!" I protested.
"Well, that's neither here nor there. Its done and it was a lovely surprise. Besides I knew how much the Duke cares for you." I snorted,
"Oh yes!" I said sarcastically and started walking towards our table. The dinner went by a lot like the ceremony. I was mentally far away in a dark murderous place while all around me people laughed, drank, and danced.
Sooner than I would have liked everything was over and Tristan and I were suppsed to retire to our room. I looked around me as we walked together looking for a suitable murder weapon but nothing caught my eye.
"Deirdre, please don't tell me you're still mad at me."
"What! Why the hell wouldn't I be?" I exclaimed, almost too shocked for words- was he truly insane to think anything would make me happier then his death?
"You know I wouldn't have really let him hurt you- I sent Kayden in to help you." I just stared at him about to screma and call him a liar when I got an idea- a brilliant idea.
"Really?" I whispered, looking up into his beautiful eyes.
"Of course, my love!" He said turning to face me, taking both of my hands in his, "It was all for show. I didn't think I could trust Kayden anymore, I had discovered it was him who stole the address book in the first place. I had to make him think you were on his side so he didn't hurt you. Oh Darling! You have no idea how I've missed you!" He pulled me close to him and I wrapped my arms around him. Did he really think I was that stupid? His story didn't fit together at all! But I just pushed my anger down and pretended I believed him
"Oh Tristan!" I cried, "I was so upset, I thought you didn't care! I thought you never cared about me!"
"No! No, my dear! I love you so much!" He whispered, stroking my hair. I shrivered with disgust but I held him tighter.
"I love you too!" I whispered back, he tilted my head up and kissed me gently. I kissed him back. Then we broke apart and he took my hand and we started walking to our room. He never noticed I had stolen his knife.
I had changed into my nightgown with the help of maids- the wedding dress was almost harder to get out of then to put it on and my nightgown wasn't too much better. It was almost completely see through and was very short and low cut, trimmed with lace but I had managed to hide Tristans knife somehow. He caught his breath as I walked in and even though I hated him I couldn't help but admit he looked gorgeous shirtless in his shorts.
I walked up to him slowly and when he reached out his arms to me I darted towards him and buried the knife into his chest. He screamed and punched me, sending me sprawling on the floor. Then he pulled the knife out of his chest and attacked me, practically falling on top of me. I tried to wiggle free, he missed my throat but managed to cut my face from chin to my ear, slicing my ear in half. I screamed and hit him with all I had.
Somehow I managed to get out from under him and grab a large silver candlestick. I held it like a sword as he came at him and knocked the blade from his hand. After a few hits to the body I darted to where the blade lay and grabbed it, sinking it into his chest a second time. This time it hit true, Tristan fell to his knees then moments later he collapsed on the floor moaning.
I quickly ran to the bathroom adjoining our bedroom and washed the blood from my hands and arms then threw on the plainest dress I could. Put on a cloak and went around the room taking all the small, valuable things I could and stuffed them into my pockets. I searched Tristan's clothes and found a stuffed wallet and I took that too. I glanced down at Tristan and walked over, pulling the knife from his body. He looked so different dead, so harmless, I shook my head and wiped the knife off on the bed before putting it in my belt.
I looked around the room once more the silently slipped out of the door and made my way out of the palace wondering how long it would take them to find Tristan's body. I almost laughed, picturing the King's face when he heard the news but it didn't matter. Kayden was safe and now I was gone- the king or anyone for that matter couldn't hurt me now.
Three years later…
I slowly moved around my shop, making sure everything was in order. Everything had to be perfect, that's the way I liked it and besides it made it so I had hardly no time to think. By the end of each day I was so tired I was asleep the moment my head hit the pillow, but I couldn't control my dreams. Most nights I would wake up screaming believing it was my wedding night again and I held that blood knife in my hands. I had tried everything- sleep potions and herbs made it worse. I had just grown used to them. I live completely alone so there was no one to hear and ask me why I woke up screaming each night…
"Excuse me, miss" A rough voice asked, I kept organizing my stacks of papers.
"I'm closed, if you want to buy paper or need a letter written come back in the morning."
"I'm not here for paper, Deirdre." I dropped the stack of papers I had been straightening and whirled around. No one knew my real name here, no one! I gasped, this couldn't be, I must have fallen asleep or something…this was impossible.
I just stood staring, working my mouth- trying to find something to say but I was lost for words, completely lost.
"Come on, Love, you think I would just let you go like that? But I must saw you definitely did a good job using what I taught you. It was almost impossible to find you. It took me all this time but it was worth it to see you're beautiful face." I snorted.
"Beautiful, you call this beautiful!" I exclaimed pointed to the deep scar running across one side of my face, an everlasting token from my wedding night.
"Deirdre, you silly girl- you will always be beautiful to me. I love you, how could you ever thought differently.
"You left, Kayden. You left me there with him at the altar." I choked out, the tears starting to flow. I scrubbed at my face with my sleeve trying to wipe the tears away.
"I left to get help! I couldn't storm the castle alone- you know that! I went and got help from some old friends."
"Help? I doubt it Kayden! And if you actually had done that you wouldn't have gotten there until AFTER Tristan had had his way with me!" I practically screamed.
"You don't know that! I would have gotten there in time unless you stripped off your clothes and laid there for him the moment you two were alone!"
"What the hell are you talking about? You think I wouldn't have fought him? I killed him! I hated him and I killed him. You were nowhere to be found!"
"I broken into the castle right after you escaped!" He looked down for a second, "He was still alive when we stormed in but we could find you anywhere. I've been looking for you all this time. I almost gave up hope of finding you." He voice slowly got quieter until he was whispering.
"What do you want?" I asked, trying to keep up a harsh exterior, "I'm not going back there."
"Nothing like that." He looked up at me with pleading eyes, "I wanted to know you were safe and I want you know that I still love you." I just stared, speechless.
"You came all this way, searched all these years just to tell me that?" I asked after a few seconds, thinking there must be something else.
"Yes, is that so strange?" He asked with a smile, "I love you and I know you loved me. I'm never going to find some one like you. You're too precious for me to just let go like that, you risked everything for my safety- how could I not do the same for you? I love you, Deirdre. Marry me, we can live here if you want or anywhere. We can travel the world, go somewhere where no one will ever find us. I'll go wherever you want, just let me be with you."
"Kayden are you serious? What about your title? Your family? Your job? You can't just leave the kingdom when it needs you!" I exclaimed, he was crazy to risk all that for me when he didn't even know if I would agree. But then again even though I had told myself I hated him too I knew the truth- I would follow him anywhere.
"I don't care about that, I can leave and I will if you want me to." He smiled but I could see in his eyes that it was hard for him to offer to give up everything.
"I'll marry you under one condition," I said with a smile. Part of me laughing because a few minutes ago we were screaming at each other and now we were talking about marriage.
"I haven't even told you yet, silly!" I laughed and it felt so good yet so foreign, I couldn't remember the last time I really laughed, "If I marry you, you have to swear that you will go back to being a spy and help our country. And that you'll let me work with you."
"What?" He exclaimed looking surprised, "Work as a spy again? After all that happened to you? And let you work with me? No! I'll never put you in that kind of danger again!"
"Then I refuse to marry you." I said sternly and crossed my arms.
"Deirdre, please I'll do anything-"
"I don't want anything else." He looked at me hoping I would give in but I just stared back, he groaned and scratched his head.
"Fine." He mumbled but I could tell he wasn't as upset as he wanted me to think. I laughed and rushed to him wrapping my arms around him. He smiled, not able to keep his face sad when I was in his arms. He kissed me and spun us in a circle, he laughed.
"Well, what are you waiting for?" He asked as he set me down.
"Hmm?" I asked, slightly confused.
"Let's go home!" He said taking my hand, I laughed and followed him out into the night hardily believing it was actually happening to me. After all that time of pain and heartbreak was I really getting my fairy tale ending? I looked at Kayden and realized I didn't care because as long as I had him I could be happy.
