The rain slammed into the side of the house, waging war on Gregory's nice quiet evening. If James was here, comforting the beautiful prince would be very difficult. He sat by the crackling fire, staring at the dancing flames. If only they would swallow him too, burning away every trace of his lonely existence. Lightning flashed outside, and a knock came at the door. Gregory stood, approaching the door. Probably travelers seeking shelter from the rain. Behind the now open door stood three men, soaked to the bone.
"I'm sorry to bother you so late." One of them yelled. "May we come in until the storm stops?" Gregory nodded, stepping back to allow the dripping travelers in. One of them cringed when thunder boomed outside, making a soft whimpering sound. Gregory looked over at the shivering form.
"He's afraid of thunderstorms." One of the men explained. Just like his James. Gregory knelt next to the man, placing a hand on his shoulder. There was no need for the poor man to suffer as his companions merely watched. The man slowly turned to look at him and Gregory's entire world ground to a halt. A beautiful face stared back at him from under the hood. Soft black locks framed a pale face, graced with deep dark blue eyes. Those same blue eyes were pooling over with tears. Greg reached out a hand and touched the other man's face gently.
"James?" He croaked, feeling tears well up in his eyes as well. The other man threw himself in Gregory's arms, sobbing when lightning flashed. "James!" He held James tightly, crying into his soft hair. "I thought you were dead!" James buried his face in the crook of Gregory's neck, sobbing softly.
"Gregory, I missed you so much!" James sobbed. "I'm sorry I couldn't find you sooner! I love you!" Gregory stroked his black hair softly, holding him close. Lightning lit up the room and James jerked in his arms.
"I love you too." Gregory murmured, kissing James' cheek. "How- how did you survive? No, wait until the storm has passed." He rocked James back and forth, humming the lullaby softly under his breath. He drifted off to sleep with his sweet prince in his arms.
When James awoke, he was lying up against a muscular chest in the morning sun. He sleepily lifted his head, and when he saw Gregory, he laid his head back down. Then he sat up, turning and looking at Gregory again. So it hadn't been a dream. He had really been reunited with Gregory after all. James smiled, wrapping his arms around Gregory's muscular torso. Gregory stirred and looked down at him, blinking several times before smiling brilliantly and kissing his forehead.
"James." Gregory murmured, kissing his forehead again. "You never told me how this all happened. I saw you, you were covered in blood and- I just…" He broke off, green eyes searching James' blue irises. James smiled, cuddling closer to him.
"It was all Christopher. He wrote me a letter explaining everything. In the twenty minutes between us getting separated he had formed a perfect plan. The only way for my mother to give up on me getting married and becoming the king of the kingdom was if I were to die. Christopher stabbed me, but the cut he made was shallow and long. Then he blotted the sheets on my cut to make it look as if I had bled much more than I actually had. The doctor had already agreed to pronounce me as dead. While he made a big commotion about me being dead, he had two guards get you from your cell and deliver you here, where they instructed you to build a home. He knew my mother would be enraged at the thought of me having taken my own life, and wouldn't give me a funeral. That way he wouldn't have to worry about covering up my body. He had a few more guards transport my "body" out of the castle, where Troy and Joseph picked me up and prepared me to live a commoner's life. And finally they brought me here to you." Gregory stared at him in awe.
"Christopher planned all of this? Lying to your mother? How in the world did he convince the guards?" Gregory asked, grabbing James' hand. "That's high treason."
"The guards always preferred my brother and I over our tyrannical mother." James said simply. "They were happy to ensure my brother would be king anyway. He was always better suited to rule than I was." Gregory kissed his cheek, and James smiled gently. They made eye contact and James closed his eyes and leaned forward slowly. Gregory laid a finger on his lips. "What?"
"I want our first kiss to be when we are getting married." Gregory whispered. "It will be much more satisfying that way." James pouted, leaning his head on one of Gregory's broad shoulders.
"Are we even allowed to get married?" James murmured, playing with Gregory's red hair.
"Actually in the kingdom of Valer, where we currently reside we are." Gregory said, smiling at his love. "The current king has a husband. I think we should go and ask for permission to be wed. That used to be the tradition for homosexual couples in Valer. I lived here when I was younger, but I don't know if it has changed."
"That sounds lovely." James murmured. "Oh wait! Where in the world are Joe and Troy?" He sat up, before standing. A note was left lying on the table.
James,
Enjoy your time with Gregory. We left during the night but didn't think it was a very good idea to wake you. Come and visit us some time!
Sincerely,
Troy and Joe.
"So they left? We should get ready to head to the castle." Gregory murmured, wrapping his arms around James from behind. "Don't you think so Your Majesty?" James chuckled, turning to face him.
"Don't call me that." James replied. "After all the prince is dead Gregory."
