He asked me if I believed in God.
What could I say?
A yes or no
would not suffice,
I am more complicated
than that.
What were my beliefs?
Were they
concrete or abstract?
Perhaps a dash of each,
with a pinch of realism,
a smidgen of myth…
and a dollop of doubt.
Not to worry,
no one is certain of anything;
we must rely
on trust and faith.
In any case
I wondered what
my brand of faith might be;
personal, not public,
that much I knew for sure.

And so I said to him:
"I believe in something
that I call God
because I cannot conceive
to define it
in any other manner."
