"I'm late, I'm late!"

I flipped the blankets off and rushed out of bed. I had overslept on my first day of school. How could this day possibly get any worse? The sunlight shone brightly through the window and reflected a little off my mirror. My boxes were half opened from the night before. I put my new uniform on and immediately left without looking at the mirror.

Running down the stairs, I realized I had forgotten my most precious item. I ran back up the grand, winding staircase and back into my new dorm. I had just come to this secluded academy yesterday afternoon. Classes had ended hour before so the headmaster, a very strict looking man in his mid-forties perhaps, decided to give me a tour of the school. Me, a transfer student, in the last trimester of her senior year no less.

"Oh, jeez, where did I put it?"

I finally saw it, a glimmering silver locket with a sea green background, gold vines embroidered the edges in small and intricate patterns. It was a gift from my father, my deceased father. I stood staring at what seemed like hours until I finally realized I had to really start rushing. It felt like I was flying down the stairs, my hair pushing back as the walls went by. I was about to turn a corner when, bam! I fell on my butt and looked up.

My jaw fell slack.

The person I had just bumped into had to be the most gorgeous boy I had ever seen. He had luscious, messy, bronze colored hair, as if he didn't comb it, but it looked so good, I didn't comment. I couldn't say anything at all. He had dark sapphire blue eyes that held my gaze he had aristocratic and perfectly proportioned features. He kept staring at me with cold, emotionless eyes.

I snapped out of my daze and stood up on wobbly legs, fixing my already crumpled uniform. He wore a uniform as well, but his was slightly different. He had all the opposite colors of mine. His jacket white, mine was black. The dress shirt inside, the pants and skirts, even the tie. Then I realized he was from the music department.

"I'm sorry," I mumbled realizing I had been staring. I began to walk away, not looking back at him.

"Wait," called a demanding voice, and what a voice tha was, like velvet, but colder than steel.

I stopped on instinct and slowly turned around, bracing myself for another one of his direct gaze. It was worse than I thought. Looking at him fully for first time, I saw his lean graceful gait as he backed me up against the wall and put his forearm above my head. I shrank back away from his arm and made myself look small.

"Who are you?" he asked slowly leaning closer.

"Uh,uh," was my answer. I didn't have a single coherent thought my head with him this close to me. He smelled like cinnamon and spices. "I'm sorry, I have to go."

I slipped out of his grip and accidentally grazed his stomach. Dang! That boy must have a seriously good body, I thought as I ran down the hall. They echoed with the rapid clacking sounds of my shoes, until I found my classroom. I opened the door and walked in. There were awards on one end of the classroom and posters of science related things on the other. Small test tubes were organized in the back. The tables were tall and occupied each by a pair of disciplined looking students. They all looked when the teacher finally noticed me.

"Ah, Ms. Barrons. So good of you to finally join us," he said, his tone laced heavily with sarcasm. "Take a seat over there please," he pointed to a seat by a dark brown haired girl. I walked over to her.

Dang! Why was everyone here so pretty?

She turned towards me and I saw her emerald green eyes. "Hello," she said smiling at me. "I'm Jackie. My real name is actually Jacqueline, but isn't that a mouthful to say?" she smiled at me again, extending her arm.

I took it and shook, "Oh, okay. Um, I'm Yelena, just call me Lina," I murmured in a daze as I sat down in my chair. For the rest of this period, I moved around robotically, putting on a false smile when someone asked me questions. I hoped no one would notice. I received some glances from boys and sneers from girls. They were all probably thinking I was fresh meat or something. I couldn't quite understand them. Did I do something wrong already? Jackie pulled my back into reality.

"Hey, you want to have lunch together?"

"I'm sorry, I can't."

"Oh, that's alright, you can come eat with us anytime," she said, sounding very hurt.

"Us? There's more?" I asked, wondering who she was talkin about.

"Yeah, my childhood friends, Lucas and Rayne. They're both from the music department and are absolutely crazy about it."

"Uh-huh," I remembered the boy from this morning and pictured him in my head. I listened to her half-heartedly as she continued to ramble on about how amazing they were.

"They were always really kind to me even though I never asked them to. Lucas and Rayne have known each other since they were in the crib. I hadn't met them since I was five and moved by them."

"That's absolutely wonderful," I told her, meaning every word I said. She was such a cool person, she was bound to have amazing friends. "Maybe I'll go eat with you tomorrow, I, uh, have to go unpack some things first," I spoke, digging my hands into my pocket and felt the cool surface of my locket.

The bell rag and I rushed to my next class, leaving Jackie behind me. I turned a corner, then again, and again, and again, until I realized I was lost. This school was so big with stine exterior walls and white cement interior walls. The floor was checkered with white and beige tiles, patterns of vines in between the small grooves. Here were frames of past students that graduated and made it big in the world. I saw a politician, an actress, a few CEO's, world renowned doctors, and a few professors who were now teaching here. I even saw the head master's graduation picture. He looked young, happy, and carefree then.

I began walking slowly, looking down at the floors when, whoosh, I fell on my butt, again! This time I was prepared to tell the person to stick it! I opened my eyes and my mouth hung open, trying to get a sound out, but failing miserably. I was staring at yet another shockingly beautiful face. His hair was full of honey blond curls. His eyes were a vibrant ocean blue and full of mischief, waiting to be set off.

"Oh, sorry, I didn't see you rounding the corner there," he apologized with a smile on his face. His eyes reflected his good humor and fun personality. He was different from the bronze haired boy. Not cold and icy, but warm and kind.

"T-that's okay," I said. I could feel the blood rushing to my face. I stood up and tried to sidestep around him, but he blocked my way trying to get passed me.

"Oh, sorry," he spoke again in his cheerful tone. He grabbed my shoulders and nudged me to the side of him. "I'll, uh, see you around."

"Yeah," I murmured slowly stepping away from him. I walked straight, turning a corner and ran to my class. I was late again, but my history teacher didn't make a big deal out of it.

The rest of the day had been uneventful and passed by quickly. When classes were over, I walked back to my dorm slowly. As I stepped inside, I found the other bed covered with boxes. My roommate had decided to come back. The headmaster had told me the night before that she had been out of town as I moved in. I was supposed to ask her any questions that needed answering. Apparently she was a genius and could help me with anything.

The bathroom door opened, out stepped a girl with dark brown hair and emerald green eyes. Jackie! She was my roommate? How many more surprises could my heart handle?
"Oh, hello, Lina!" she exclaimed cheerfully.

"What the hell?"

"Uh, I suppose I should have told you I was your roommate, huh?"

"No. Really. You think?"

"Sorry, sorry. I didn't want you to say no to me like you did for the lunch thing."

"Well," I sighed, "what's done is done and I didn't turn you down," I clarified, " I told you I had to unpack and I do, and I would eat with you tomorrow, and I will. I see you have some stuff to unpack, too," I said, pointing to her boxes.

"Do you promise?" she inquired.

"Yes, yes, I promise. Now can we go to sleep?"

"After everything that happened, you want to sleep?"

"Truthfully? I'm about to collapse on the floor right now," I yawned, emphasizing my statement.

"All right."

I took a quick shower, dried my hair and brushed my teeth in record time. Climbing onto the beds, we made small talk. Nothing really important, but more along the lines of roommate stuff.

"Good night, Jackie," I said, curling myself in the warm blankets as I drifted to sleep.

I had a very strange dream that night. I dreamt that I was in formal clothing, a long, blue gown, with a navy blue sash on my waste, the ends hanging loose. It was strapless with sea green and gold embroidered rims. Sleek and beautiful. But what surprised me most was not the extravagant gown, it was what was in my hands, a violin. I had given up on my music when my father passed away. He was the one who encouraged me, who let my feelings grow. Now they were buried deep inside.

I woke up frightened, the emotions I kept bottled up cracked and shattered into pieces. I felt my face. It was wet. I was crying? I hadn't cried since my dad's funeral. Why? Why now?

"Yelena? Are you awake?" Jackie said groggily. She saw my face then, covered in tears. "Oh, my god! Are you okay?"

I couldn't do anything. My body was paralyzed. Jackie came over and put her arms around me, trying to comfort me. I couldn't push her away. I couldn't do anything. Then I did the only thing possible for me right then and surprised even myself. I started crying, sobbing on to her clothes.

"It's okay, Yelena, it's okay, shhh," she said soothingly.

I did nothing but cry for hours, until at last, I fell asleep.

I awoke with a start. My throat was dry and my body felt weak. I looked around me and remembered what happened last night. I looked in the mirror, my eyes were swollen! Great, just absolutely fan-freakin-tastic!

I looked over to the other bed. Jackie was still sleeping soundly; she must have gone back over to her bed after I used her expensive, probably silk, pajamas as my tissue.

"Hey, wake up, we're gonna be late," I said, trying to shake her awake.

"Mmm, not yet, Lucas. Give me five more minutes!" she said drowsily.

"Oh, so you like Lucas, eh?" I teased calmly, feeling much more excited than I sounded.

"Ahhh!" she screamed, scrambling out of bed and falling on her head. It took all of my control not to burst into laughter, but I couldn't stop myself from a series of uncontrollable giggle. "You cannot tell him I like him, promise?" she said flustered.

"Sure, sure," I said as my giggles began to subside

"Ugh, just hurry up and change," she said walking to the bathroom. We hurried and were out the door in ten minutes. Walking through the half empty halls, I noticed some people in the other classes. I walked into chemistry with Jackie. We were doing dissection of frogs today. I felt sick already. I hated dissection of anything. They were already dead, why would you disturb their peace?

The class period went by slowly and I let Jackie do most of it. There were kids like Jackie, who did it for their grades and didn't care. Others did it for the fun of it and thought it was cool. Then there were those like me who thought it was absolutely grotesque and grimaced at every moment at it. Writing down my observations and answering the questions was the most I could handle. When classes finally ended, I grabbed our books and rushed out of the class, not being able to stand being in the class any longer.

"No running in the halls," I heard the teacher yell at us.

We ran to the next class and the day went by slowly until the bell for lunch finally rang.

"Oh, finally! I thought classes would never end!" I exclaimed.

"Hehe. It wasn't that bad," Jackie said as we walked to the cafeteria.

"Wasn't that bad? If I have to hear the words 'in the year' one more time, I'm going to lose it!" I said, truly glad that classes were over for now.

"Oh, stop exaggerating. Look, there they are," she said waving to a table.

I noticed two boys sitting at the table we were headed to.

"Oh, Lucas, Rayne! Over here," the two boys turned and lifted their heads when sudden recognition pierced me. I was walking toward the two boys that I was trying so hard to avoid!

What were the two pretty boys doing at the table we were headed for?

"Hey guys, this is Yelena, she prefers Lina," Jackie introduced, talking to both guys as if they were best friends. "Lina, this is Lucas," she pointed to the honey-haired hottie, "and this is Rayne," she pointed to the bronze-haired ice prince. "They are the ones I talked about before. I rarely get to see them except during lunch, the only time both departments get to meet."

"Uh-huh," was my intelligent response.

"Hey there beautiful," Lucas said with a killer smile. I mean, if you could have died from being smiled at, I would have been dead three times over already. Instead, I felt my cheeks burn and put my head down so they couldn't see.

"Do you guys know each other?" Jackie said, surprise colored her tone.

"We just bumped into each other," Lucas said, throwing on of his killer smiles at me again.

"Whatever," I heard Rayne mumble.

"Okay, let's go get some food now," Jackie said, a tiny bit annoyed. I realized she was jealous because she was left out and hadn't gotten to talk to Lucas. Hmmm, very interesting.

By the time we sat back down, it was back to normal, the friendly atmosphere was back.

"So then she crashed into me and fell on her butt…" Lucas told Jackie, recounting the tale of how we had met. Literally bumping into each other.

"How did you meet Lina, Rayne?" Jackie asked him.

"Same way," he said indifferently in that voice of his, no emotions on his face or in his voice.

"Wow, nice Lina, bumping into them like that."

"Hehe, yeah, funny," I said blushing.

"Whoops, looks like me and Rayne got to go. We have practice today," he said up and grabbed Rayne's arm, walking out the door in a rush with Rayne facing the opposite direction still trying to finish off his lunch. It was a pretty funny sight, seeing Rayne like that.

"Okay, bye guys," I said quietly, knowing they could not hear me. Then Rayne looked up and smiled for the first time at me. I lost my breath and train of thought instantly as I watched him turn back around the right way and walked with Lucas.

The lunch bell rang and I gathered my things and waited for Jackie. Walking in a daze to class, I finally noticed that Jackie's face was red and almost as dazed as mine.

"What's wrong with you?" I asked.

"Huh, what are you talking about?"

I pointed to her cheeks, and it just got even more red than before. I began to laugh.

"Stop, it's so not funny, Lina!"

"What…ever," I said trying to stop my fit only to fail miserable as more laughter rose in me. We walked into class and took our seats next to each other.

"Ah, Yelena, can you take this to the music department?" Mr. Walker, my history teacher asked. Mumbles and whispers began through the class, excluding Jackie and me.

The music department did not have a good reputation with the general course and vice-versa. Although both sides came from wealthy families, many students from the music department looked down upon the general course and so in turn, they think that the music course is full of rich, spoiled, and snobby brats.

"Yeah, sure, um…" I looked at him confused, not knowing where to go.

"Oh, uh, go straight down the hall and make a left there should be stairs. Take those and go outside the building. There should be another building across the field. You should see a door there, that's the music building although it is hard to miss."

I went out of my seat and took the package. The way to the music department was quite simple. As I walked outside, my jaw opened; there was an area full of open grass and wild flowers that dominated the entire area. It looked more like something that came out of a fairy tale book than actual reality. Then I saw the music building.

The walls were white and too bright to look at with the sun shining bright over it. There were small windows that were outlines in gold paint, and upon closer inspection, there were intricately designed instrument, small as it will, but detailed, that were raised slightly. There were three stories to the building. The first was the practice room, the second story held classes concerning musicality, and the third held classes for the general studies. The outlining of the building was painted gold and looked more like and aristocrat's mansion than a school building.

I woke from my daze and stepped inside. Even the interior of the building was different. The first floor was practice rooms so there were doors on both sides of the hall. Each door led to a fairly large room. Some had pianos, but most had a music stand only. There were vases in some corners and marble statues in other corners.

I looked inside a room and saw someone playing the trumpet. The rooms were soundproof. Then I saw a room with a violin case and I thought of my past. I remembered the touch of strings on my fingertips and the melodious tune that I would produce. I missed it so much, but no more.

I went to the third floor and walked into a room that the package was to be delivered to. The woman that stood there was pudgy with short blond hair and intelligent, but friendly, blue eyes.

"Hello there," she said smiling at me. Heads turned to stare and I realized I was interrupting her lecture about the causes and effects of the Civil War as it had said on her board.

I looked around, wondering if Lucas or Rayne were in the class, they weren't. I handed the teacher the package and walked away without saying a single word.

Walking back down the stairs, I thought of the looks that some of the students had given me. Some were arrogant, others were merely curious, some had given me looks that gave a new meaning to "if looks can kill," and others were just impassive. They seriously thought that they were better than the general courses.

I walked past the practice room with the violin still there. Memories of my dad praising my skill, I thought of the lessons and my first competition in which I had won. Then I remembered the fateful day when I had heard my dad being in an accident and how as I was playing the piece for my competition, the strings had

Stop, I told myself. I didn't want to relive the moment in which I had given up my music. I looked away from the violin and walked back to my classroom

As I sat back down, I looked over and saw that Jackie had already finished her homework.

"So, what do you think of the music department?"

"Well, it's different," I replied.

I couldn't shake the feeling that someone had been watching me in the building.

"Hello, hello? Earth to Lina!"

"Huh, oh, yeah. What were you saying?" I realized that Jackie had called me three times.

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah, just tired I guess," I said just as the bell rang. The rest of he day went by uneventfully. Lucas and Rayne couldn't make it to lunch, saying they had practice so we at by ourselves.

As Jackie and I walked back to our dorms, I saw a boy playing in one of the practice rooms since the dorms were close to the music departments. I stopped as I realized who was in there.

"Is that Rayne?"

"Yeah, he plays the violin."

I watched, mesmerized by the movement of his graceful fingers across the fingerboard and the relaxed grip of his bow. He had perfect a perfect straight back and looked extremely professional. His lean arms were fluid in his movements, not jerky.

In the morning, it seemed as though I had overslept…again!

"Jackie! Jackie! We're going to be late!"

"Mmm, mmh mm-mmmh!"

"I can't hear you. Hurry up and get dressed!"

She turned herself around and yelled, "Go away! It's Saturday!" I realized she was definitely not a morning person.

"No, it isn't. Today is Friday. Hurry up, unless you want me to call Lucas and tell him to come here and carry you off the bed like a princess," I threatened.

"You wouldn't," she glared at me, daring me to do it.

"Oh, okay, fine. I'll just call him right now. He gave me his number during lunch," failing to mention that I had Rayne's number as well.

I took my cell and dialed Lucas's number.

"Yelena Barrons, give me the phone!"

"No way!"

The line picked up, "Hello?"

"Oh, Lucas," I said in a sing-song voice, "Jackie here doesn't want to get out of b –ack!" Jackie tackled me to the floor, the phone sliding to the corner. We went after it and I yelled into the phone when I grabbed it.

"Yeah, she wants to be carried out of bed by you, Lucas."

"Yelena Barrons! Shut up!"

"Uh, do you want me to hang up?" Lucas asked, clearly amused with the situation.

"No, of course not, I want you to come over here and carry Ja—,"

"Yes, we want you to hang up and pretend this never happened," Jackie interrupted, taking the phone away from me.

"Uh-huh, well, um, I'm already here," a voice said behind us.

"Told you, we should have stayed back," another voice said, more melodious than the first.

We turned to see both Lucas and Rayne staring at us with amusement.

"We were in the area, you know, practice rooms."

Jackie was sitting on my back when she got the phone out of my hands and snapped it shut. I tried desperately to get her off, but it was the morning and I wasn't a morning person. Jackie wasn't either, but she was fueled already.

"Uh, hey guys. Hehe," I said awkwardly.

Then I realized how we were dressed, clad in very thin pajamas. Jackie seemed to notice to and looked down at herself.

She turned a shade, then two of red. "Oh, my god! Get out!"

"Uh,uh, s-sorry," Lucas said flushing. Even Rayne looked embarrassed instead of his usual emotionless face. He had opened up to me more lately. They rushed out of the room, closing the door behind them.

"This is awkward," I stated the obvious.

"You are going to pay for this."

"S-sorry?"

"Hurry up and get dressed."

"Oh, now you do want I want you to do? It's because he's standing right outside the door isn't he? "

"You shouldn't talk. Your Rayne is, too."

"You did not!"

"Oh yes I di-id," she shot back at me, saying the "did" so it separated into two syllables.

"Just go to the bathroom and change."

She walked to the bathroom carrying her clothes. I began taking mine off and put on my undergarments when,

"Hey are you guys do…"Rayne said walking in, followed by Lucas.

"Kyaaaahhh!"

"What, what?" Jackie exclaimed, rushing out of the bathroom only in her short white towel.

Rayne and Lucas had turned pink all the way up to their ears.

"Get out!" I screamed, throwing the closest thing, which was my alarm clock, at them as they rushed out.

"Sorry, sorry,ow!" Rayne apologized as my clock hit his head.

The door slammed behind them as they rushed out. Jackie and I stared at the door for a few seconds.

"We better hurry, we're really going to be late now," I said.

"Yeah."

We walked back to our original spots. Changing quickly, I thought about what Lucas an Rayne were thinking right now.

"Okay, let's go," Jackie said as we gathered our things.

"Yes, lets, after you."

"No way, you go first."

"Uh-uh, what if their still out there?"

"Which is why you're going first."

"This is ridiculous," I walked and opened the door. They were both there, looking at the ceiling, trying not to look embarrassed.

"We can go now, or would you like to continue counting the lines on the ceiling?" I teased.

Both boys blushed and walked down the corridor next to us. We got a few stares and whispers because of the music uniforms that Lucas and Rayne both donned.

"We'll see you at lunch," Rayne and Lucas said at the same time.

"Yeah, bye," Jackie said, turning to our classroom as Rayne and Lucas walked the other direction.

The day went by uneventfully except for a surprise pop-quiz in English and a nerdy looking boy who kept making googly eyes at me.

The lunch bell rang at last. I gathered my things and walked to Jackie. She was standing by the door.

"So lunch," I said.

"Yeah," she said, blushing a crimson color.

We walked in silence to the cafeteria until we saw Lucas and Rayne. Lucas smiled at us then looked down like Rayne as he recalled the events of this morning.

"So, what did you guys do today?" Jackie inquired.

"Not much, same old stuff," Lucas replied.

I stared down at my feet, my bangs covering my eyes as I looked at Rayne.

As if reading my thoughts, he looked up at me.

"Come on, let's go get some food," Jackie said, grabbing my arm and dragged me along.

Waiting in the lunch line with Lucas, Rayne, and Jackie were still awkward after the events of the morning.

"Okay, I can't take this anymore!" I declared.

"Uh, are you okay?" Rayne said.

"No, I'm not! Forget what happened this morning," they all blushed, "I want a good atmosphere again! This silence is killing me! I'm going to lose my sanity if this goes on any longer!"

"Sorry, Lina," Lucas said.

"Our bad," echoed Jackie.

"You know how to make this all better? Forget everything and talk again!"

"We can't help it. It's a little, er, awkward talking about this, um, situation," Rayne explained.

"Fine, I'll start a conversation. Rayne, how long have you known Jackie and Lucas?"

"Well, I met them when I was five…wait, didn't I tell you this already?" Jackie realized.

We finally got our food and sat back down at our usual table.

"Fine, Lucas, how long have you and Rayne known each other?"

"Since we were playing in the crib I suppose."

"No, it was practically after we were born," Rayne argued. "Our parents were childhood friends as well," he said turning to me.

"No, it was the cribs."

"Don't fight with me, you know I'll win."

Lucas mumbled something unintelligible under his breath and Rayne smiled an arrogant grin. I blushed, realizing I was staring at him. He should smile more; he looked good when he did.

I looked down eating some of my pizza. When I looked up again, I saw Lucas and Jackie discussing something while Rayne was eating his lunch. The atmosphere was back to normal and I was glad for it. I looked back over at Lucas and Jackie and caught two word from their private conversation, "set up."

After classes had ended, Jackie and I walked back to our dorms.

"So, are you busy tomorrow, Lina?"

"No, I don't think so."

"Great, come to town with us to town, we need some supplies anyways."

"Us?" she said us. I was going to regret this even though I didn't hear the details yet.

"Yeah, Lucas, Rayne, and me."

"Sure, why not?" We reached the door. I took a quick shower and Jackie took one right after.

"Hey, Jackie?" I asked as we both lay down on our beds.

"Yeah?"

"Would it be bad if I like Rayne?"

"I knew it!"

"What?" I asked, mortified.

"You like Rayne, you like Rayne," she sang, jumping on her bed.

"Maybe, I don't know," she stopped jumping.

"Whatever you're decision, it won't bother me, 'sides, me and Lucas are dating now."

I stared at her, "Huh?"

"Yeah, it was official today. I confessed during lunch and he said he always had the same feelings so… um… we were going to town tomorrow and, uh, we wanted you and Rayne to come. You know, like a double date?"

"You totally set this up!" I exclaimed as I remembered her exchange with Lucas.

"I wasn't sure you liked Rayne until now! He likes you too, you know.

"When you were talking to Lucas at lunch today, you meant this didn't you? 'Set up.' Pfft. I knew you had something up your sleeves."

"Don't hate, I'm doing this for you. I know it hasn't been long, but you're my best friend."

"Fine, but don't be disappointed if nothing happens."

"Okay, good night."

I growled at her, not knowing whether or not I should be mad at her for setting me up.

We woke up early to get ready to go to town. I looked in the mirror and saw my reflection. My hair was dark and almost blue-black in the light. My eyes were a sea-green color. My hair was done and hung in loose curls on my back. I guess I didn't look that bad. I wore a blue blouse that brought my eyes out and a pair of dark skinny jeans with simple black flats.

"Okay, now I'm ready," Jackie said behind me. She had her hair straightened and wore a long-sleeved, v-neck shirt with dark jeans that she tucked inside her leather boots. She looked really good, and didn't even try. "We better go get them. They're always late."

"It's okay, you should stay back and finish up. You don't look satisfied," I offered.

"Yeah, you're right, just hurry back," she said touching a strand of her hair.

"I'll be right back."

I had been to the music building before so I knew how to get there. We were suppose to all meet on the first floor, but I'll just bring them up to our dorms instead.

I walked in and saw the violin again. Trying hard, I willed myself to look away. I took another step, but couldn't help myself. I walked back to the violin and entered the practice room. The violin was there and shone because of the light through the window. I picked it up and set the bow against the strings.

I began playing. Before I realized, I was playing "Serenade" by Schubert. Putting all my feelings into it, I played the piece, full of heartbreak. I thought of my father and mother, who were at home and my two older brothers who were way too overprotective. As I played, I let loose all my emotions which I had kept bottled up for so long. When I was finished, I cried. I was alone, all alone.

The door closed and I turned around. Someone turned a corner. I put the violin back in its case and wiped my tears in haste.

Someone had seen me. They saw me play.

"And then, and then…" I stopped and began crying again.

"It's okay! It's not like it's the end of the world!" Jackie tried again, practically begging me to stop my fits.

"B-b-but," I stuttered.

"No, buts. We already delayed the time till one so you have till then to calm down."

"I nodded and wiped my eyes. I took a deep breath and felt myself calm down a little.

"Now, come into the bathroom and I'll redo your make-up."

I nodded again, still too distressed to talk. Jackie led me to the bathroom and began fixing my appearance as I stood there obediently.

"Now you're done!"

"Thanks," forcing a smile onto my face.

"Why didn't you ever tell me you played the violin?" Jackie inquired, curiosity lit her features.

"I don't want to talk about it"

"Fine," Jackie sighed, a little disappointed.

We walked out of the bathroom and into the bed area. I gathered my things and we left in a hurry.

I turned to Jackie when we were finally outside, "You have to promise not to tell anyone."

"Why not?"

"Please," I begged, "please just keep it a secret," my voice dropped to a whisper.

"Okay, I swear."

"Okay, let's go. Lucas and Rayne are probably pissed at us now."

"Yeah, we've got to hurry!" Jackie realized at last, grabbing my arm and running towards the boys' music dorm.

We ran inside the dorm and up the stairs to their room. Knocking on the smooth and shiny wood, we waited until they opening the door.

"Come in, it's open!" a voice called, velvet, but with a tone of humor. Rayne. Lucas must have told him about the date last minute.

We opening the door and walked in. their room was nothing surprising. Rayne's side of the room, as I could see, was very organized and decorated with simple, but very sophisticated furniture. His violin was in its case and lay in a corner of his side. Lucas's room was very different. Decorated with blues and greens, it resembled the ocean somewhat. There was a keyboard in a corner of his side. I realized with some surprise that he played the piano. There was a copy of Mozart's "Rondo a la Turca" on the stand in front of the keyboard.

"Hey, finally you guys are here," Lucas stepped out of the bathroom. "Rayne will be right back. He went to get some sheet music. He'll be here any second."

"Yeah no problem," I said glad we didn't have to go yet, "but I didn't see him walk…"

The door by the bathroom opened and Rayne walked out of what looked like a closet. He had a folder in his hands. He smiled when he saw us, suppressing a laugh, but he couldn't quite hide his chuckle.

"Shut it, Rayne!" Jackie growled.

"You two look so happy. It's amusing," Rayne said.

Jackie and Lucas blushed bright crimson, no words coming from their mouths.

I burst out in laughter because of this and Rayne joined me.

"Lina!" Lucas cried, "Jeez! Stop it you two."

"Okay, let's just go now," I said as I pulled Rayne off his bed when he finally collapsed from laughter. "We want to get to town before it actually gets dark."

"Uh, right. Let's go," Jackie said putting her arm in Lucas's and rushing out the door.

"Well, that was awkward," I sighed.

"Let's go and make the most of what they set up for us," Rayne said, bowing at me with his hand reaching out towards me.

"What a gentleman," I said, more calmly than I felt. I put my hand in his and blushed.

"Uh, right. We should get going."

We exited through the door and locked it behind us. Sudden curiosity flared inside me.

"What was that closet thing you came from?"

"Oh, me and Lucas keep our music in there."

"Music?"

"Yeah. We have to keep it somewhere so we use that since we don't really use it for anything else really."

"Yeah, I got it," a sudden recollection of him practicing his violin. I felt my cheeks heat up.

"Are you okay? Your face is kind of red."

"Yeah, it's nothing." He looked at me as if knowing I wasn't telling him the truth, which I wasn't.

"Okay, whatever," he gave me the look again.

"It's just," unable to keep it in, "I'm embarrassed that they set us up like this. I mean, I'm absolutely ordinary and you have looks that anyone would sell his soul to have. Have you never noticed that?" I blushed at my outburst.

"You're not ordinary," he said, turning crimson at my statement, "you are beautiful you know."

"T-thanks," I stuttered, surprised by his compliment. "You sure have loosened up to me, you seemed so cold before."

"I know, I tried to keep you at a distance because I wanted to focus elsewhere. I knew if I got to like you, things would start falling apart.

"O-okay," I said, stunned by his confession.

"I have feelings for you and it's growing. It's at the more-than-friends level right now, but not at the in-love level yet."

"Yet?"

"Yet," he repeated, steering me to the door. We walked out and met with Jackie and Lucas.

"Okay, we'll take Lucas's car since he offered," Jackie told us.

"Let's go, it's almost three now," Rayne said, almost a little uncomfortable now.

Walking to the front gates, we spoke of nothing. At last the car was sighted and we got in. Lucas drove the winding road down to town. On each side o it, trees and bushes lined the edges until at last we saws a glimpse of the main road.

"Just to break the awkward silence here, where are we going?" I asked, my curiosity growing by the second.

"Just here and there. We're going to browse around," Jackie answered.

"Okay," I replied, sounding a little unsure. The car got quiet again.

"Hey," Lucas broke the silence, "I didn't know you played an instrument Lina, especially the violin!"

I froze, shocked. "How did you know that?" emphasizing each of my words in a soft whisper.

"Yelena, calm down," Rayne said, putting a hand on my arm.

"How did you know that?" I said again, louder this time.

"Uh, they posted the qualifications for the Concours at the end of the year just an hour ago on the school website. You're the first from the general courses to make it in," Lucas explained, surprise in his voice, "How did you sign up anyways? Someone had to have heard you play before and someone high up, too. They only choose the best five people at the school. You must have seriously impressed them."

I thought of the figure who had seen me. "I didn't sign up for this, it was involuntary," my voice began to crack.

"So Lina, how did you do on the test in chem?" Jackie asked, trying to change the subject, noticing my almost breakdown.

"Uh, not so good?" I said, sounding more like a question than an answer, but I was thankful for her, I would tell her later.

"Yelena," Rayne said, silent the whole time, "what do you mean involuntary?"

I couldn't handle it anymore. I took my pendant out of my pockets and held it out. Lucas pulled over to the side and stopped to look at it. I let it dangle in front of me, the crystals catching light.

"My father gave this to me on my sixth birthday, twelve years ago. It was the most beautiful thing he had given me and I treasured it, but my dad was in an accident the day after. He was in the ICU but they couldn't save him," I put the pendant away, "I was too young to understand then, but the bills were expensive so my mother, brother, and I had to work to pay it off. I took violin lessons before because my father encouraged me, but since his death, I couldn't fell anymore. The music doesn't come to me.

I suddenly got a strange scholarship saying all my expenses would be paid in full. Everyone has heard of Cross Academy, the prestigious school for the rich and geniuses. My family was overjoyed so I came here. It was so normal at first, you know, but I couldn't help myself and found this violin in the open and played it," I said rapidly, felling tears fall down my face, "then someone heard me and now I'm in this mess!" I stopped, the tears gushing down my face. I used the back of my hand to wipe them away.

"Yelena, it's okay," Rayne said, comforting me, "Lucas drive."

Before I could stop myself, I flung myself at Rayne and started bawling into his shoulder.

"Shh, it's okay," he said petting my head slowly.

"Maybe we should go back," Jackie told Lucas, "she's not in a good mood right now."

"No, don't. Please, keep going. I need time outside this place," I begged, my voice muffled by Rayne's jacket.

"Yelena, maybe we should go back," Rayne whispered against my hair.

"No, keep going," I said, my voice still husky, but I felt better. "Sorry about your jacket, Rayne."

"No, biggie."

"Sorry," I murmured again.

"Okay, Rayne, switch seats with me so I can fix Lina's make-up," Jackie declared then turning to me and grimaced, "No offence, honey, but you look like you came out of a zombie movie. You look terrible, and Lucas? Drive!?"

Jackie climbed to the backseat as Lucas slowly accelerated the car. Rayne stood up and switched seats with Jackie.

"Okay, now, the only bad thing is the eyeliner, good thing I brought waterproof, just in case."

"Thanks, Jackie."

"No prob. We're best friends after all."

I was stunned. I'd only known her a few days and we were already best friends? "Really?"

"Yes, really!"

"Thank you," I said feeling emotions coming back up.

"No! You are not going to cry again."

"Okay."

She fixed the make-up quickly and we rode in silence he rest of the way to town. When we finally arrived, I looked like I did when I stepped out of our room. Jackie could work any miracle.

"Okay, let's go watch a movie," Lucas said, stretching from the drive.

"Yeah! Good idea, "Jackie said and as she leaned up, Lucas bent down and kissed her.

Rayne and I looked away, feeling as if we had interrupted something. I looked at Rayne and he gave me one of his rare smiles. It was like the sun had come out after a long, rainy day, no pun intended.

"Okay, let's go! It's already four thirty!" Jackie exclaimed looking at her watch.

"No chick flicks," Lucas said, serious about the choice of movies.

"Why not?" Jackie whined.

"Because their weird and all gushy with emotion."

"Fine, how about a zombie movie? I got that idea from Lina earlier."

"Hey!" I said.

"Yeah, why not? Zombies," Rayne said, giving me a look that pleaded not to watch any chick flick.

"Okay, fine," I conceded.

"Okay, zombie it is," Jackie sighed.

That day was one of the funniest days I have ever had. We watched the movie, me sitting next to Rayne, and Jackie next to Lucas. There was a part that was frightening and I accidentally held hands with Rayne. Even after the move, we didn't let go. When Jackie saw this, I could see the corners of her mouth twitching, trying to fight off an enormous grin.

We had pasta the minute we found a restaurant. We were all ravenous. Then we went around the town to find shops and gift stores. We all tried on different clothes at different places. We were surrounded by our friends and we were as happy as can be.

Going home with laughs and giggles, the atmosphere felt amazing. Rayne and I held hands as did Jackie and Lucas. I felt so happy and wished that this day could go on forever.

"Okay, that was fan-freaking-tastic!" Jackie exclaimed when we got back to our dorms.

"Yeah, it was," I said. It still felt like a blissful dream to me. We both got ready to go to sleep and when I was finally out. I got on my bed and before my head even touched the pillow, I was asleep.

That night I had a dream again. I was in the blue gown again and then I realized, it was the same dream as before. This time though, I didn't want it to stop. I let the dream continue and slept in blissful peace.

Knock, knock. The door was being knocked on, and then pounded. I reluctantly got out of bed and woke Jackie up. I opened the door and was immediately awakened.

"Hey,Lina!"

"Wha-you-h-the-huh?"

"English, Lina. Speak English."

"Wh-wh-what, huh?"

"Better. We got the email the school sent us and we came over. Mom and Tris are waiting downstairs."

"Wait, Mom and Tristan?"

"Uh, yeah."

"Lina? Who is…" Jackie stopped midsentence. "Who the hell is that?"

"Nice to meet you, too. I'm Yelena's oldest brother. I'm Aryn, and you are?"

My brother. My brother? What the hell is Aryn doing here? He was suppose to be back in Oregon!

"Why are you here?" I asked, glaring at him.

"I told you, we got the school email and wanted to congratulate you," his face looked sad, "We haven't heard you play in so long."

"I'm…not…playing!"

"Yes, you are. The date is already set and so is the time. You can't back out of this."

"I…I can't play anymore," my voice broke, "I can't. I don't feel it anymore Aryn. I can't feel the music anymore."

"Lina."

"No, you wasted your time here. Take mom and Tris back home, there is nothing for you here."

"Lina," Jackie said softly. I had forgotten that she was here. "It's my fault, I'm sorry."

"What?" surprise colored my tone.

"I, uh, was worried you got lost so I went after you. I saw you playing and crying and I thought 'How beautiful.' I ran to the headmaster's office and told him. He said he knew and that was why you had gotten that scholarship here. He apparently heard you compete before. That's why I thought your name sounded so familiar. You were supposedly a musical genius," her voice cracked a little, "I didn't know you would be so heartbroken. Lina, I'm so, so sorry."

"You did this?"

"I'm sorry, forgive me," she said again, her eyes red and tears were threatening to spill over.

"Lina, you are already too late. You have to find a piece and fast. There are three rounds and the first one is in four weeks!" Aryn exclaimed, throwing his hands in the air. "How will you find a piece in time?"

"Okay, calm down," I said aout loud. "Now I have to play in this Concours and win?"

"Well," Jackie started, wiping her eyes, "you don't have to win, but if you do, the school pays for two years of the collage of your choice, including living expenses. That's what's great about being a filthy rich school I suppose, throwing your money all around the place. Oh, and besides that, you get a shiny medal, plated with 24 karat gold!"

"Really?" Aryn and I said at the same time.

"Really."

We turned around and saw that both Lucas and Rayne leaning on each side of the door. I blushed as I recalled yesterday. Rayne saw this and lowered his head slightly to avoid eye contact with me.

"Who are you?" Aryn asked.

"Competitors in the Concours, friends at school. Who are you?" Rayne asked back.

"You didn't answer my question."

"I'm Rayne, he's Lucas. Now answer mine."

"Aryn, Yelena's oldest brother."

Rayne and Lucas looked surprised at this. "Now that I think about it, there was a woman who looked very similar to Lina and a younger boy who looks like, well, you."

"Rayne, that's mean," Lucas chastised as he smacked Rayne's head.

"What? I didn't say anything but the truth. And that hurt by the way.'

"It was supposed to."

"Back on topic," Aryn said, a little impatient now, "What are you going to play, Lina?"

"I…I don't know," I said, hanging my head.

"It's okay, the theme for the first round should be posted soon. You can borrow some of my sheet music for it since you probably don't have time to handpick a song," Rayne said, putting a hand on my shoulder.

"Yeah, you'll be fine," Lucas encouraged as he put and arm around Jackie's waist.

I was overcome by emotions and hugged Rayne, kissing him on both cheeks, then directly on the mouth, not caring that I was in front of an audience.

"Oh, my!" a soft voice came from behind.

I looked behind Rayne and Lucas and saw a surprised mom and two very furious brothers behind me. Oh, fuck. I was scewed. Or Rayne was.

"H-hey, mom. What's up?" I asked her, shocked. I felt the blood rush to my face.

Aryn and Tris both stepped up, about to pummel Rayne when my mother put both her hands up.

"Oh, I'm so proud of you!" she ran and hugged me, so tight the air rushed out of me. "You have to start practicing. Me and Tristan looked up what the theme was. It was, 'something to believe in.' I wonder what he means. Good luck, honey." She had a sad look all of a sudden. "We're leaving now. I know it was a surprise for us to be here, but we wanted to see you. We have to go. Aryn and Tristan must go back to school. We'll be in touch okay?"

"Okay," I felt tears welling up in my eyes as I said good bye to my family.

"We'll be back before the competition, okay?" Tristan assured me, "Don't think you got rid of us yet."

"Never."

"Bye," they all said together. Aryn and Tris both looked back at Rayne and then were out the door. They left me standing there with Jackie, Rayne, and Lucas.

"I don't think they like me much," Rayne observed.

"It's 'cause someone here gave him a very intimate kiss," Lucas teased.

"Hey, don't make fun of her," Jackie smacked Lucas's arm, but was unable to control her ridiculous smile.

"They're just over protective," I said, blushing again.

"Come on, get changed then come over so I can give you some sheet music," Rayne reminded.

"Oh, yeah," I said as I pushed both him and Lucas out and quickly changed.

"Are you mad?" Jackie asked when we were finally alone.

"At you? No. I'm upset with me. I used to bury all my emotions, but playing had let them resurface again. I forgot about it, but you reminded me of it. Thank you," I said and pulled her into a hug.

"Thank you, Lina," she said hugging me back.

"I have to go now, I'll be right back," as I stepped away and walked out the door.

Walking to the boys' dorm rooms, I recalled what had happened in just a few days. I finally reached their rooms and knocked on their door.

"Here, I think this will be enough," Rayne said as Lucas eyed us curiously.

"Enough? You could open a whole store with this!" I said. He had given me a stack of various pieces, form simple warm ups to crazy classical like Vivaldi's "Winter." I looked at him again, "Thank you."

"Yeah, now choose something and practice!" Lucas yelled and pushed me out the door.

"Wai—" I started, but was cut by the slamming door. I heard booming laughter, followed by a scuffle and an "ow." Rayne must have hit Lucas or something like that.

The next few weeks were routinely, wake up, school, lunch, practice, sleep, wake up, school, lunch, practice, sleep.

"Finally, only three more days!" Rayne said during lunch.

"I know, my fingers won't move right!" Lucas pouted, showing his fingertips.

"Me, too," I said.

"You guys work too hard. Relax a bit!" Jackie said, worrying over us like a mother hen.

"Lina!" a voice called from behind.

No, no, no, please no! I turned around and there they were, Tris and Aryn. Conversations stopped and I saw a few juniors giggle and squeal. They walked towards me and then I realized the girls thought that my brothers were handsome as I looked at their reactions. Eww! That's gross!

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

"Hey the headmaster invited us, okay?" Tristan said, smiling very smugly.

"Yeah, he wanted us to give this to you, too!" Aryn said, holding up a clothing bag.

"What…is…that?" I asked, steel seeping through my "I'm innocent" voice.

"Whoa, don't hate. It was dad's present."

I froze, "Huh?"

"He left a not in this compartment in his drawer. We found it when we were looking for something to sell for your dress, but I think this is a much better choice," Aryn stated.

I opened the bag and then stopped before looking inside. "How did you get this?"

"In the compartment was the most beautiful dress I've ever seen. He said it was to be your graduation present, but who cares if it's a few months early. It turns out, dad invested in some stuff and made it a huge business! You don't have to worry about money anymore. It turns out the dress came with the will we never found and another note explaining things." Tris handed me two pieces of paper.

"Thank you."

"Yeah, yeah," he said.

"Now, finish your lunch and then practice," Rayne said. "You can sit down if you want," he said turning to my brothers.

"No, we've got to unpack," Tris said. He and Aryn turned around and walked out of the lunchroom. By this time, conversations were going around again and I saw some people looking at me. I sighed. First there was the gossip about me being in the Concours, and now there were rumors about the transfer student's "hot brothers." Ewww!

"Okay, we done?" Jackie said amusement in her eyes. She looked at Lucas and stood up.

"We have to go somewhere, she's taking me to go find another suit," Lucas said standin up after her. "You should try that dress on, Lin. And Rayne? Find something descent to wear."

The next day was a weekend and I had two days to get everything perfect. I played in our room on the weekends since no one bothered to say something. I saw the dress bag hanging and unzipped it.

I gasped. It was the dress from my dreams. The long blue gown was as beautiful as it was in my dreams, if not more glorious. I tried it on and reluctantly took it off. I took a quick shower and put regular clothes on. I had chosen Pachebel's "Canon in D." it was a hope that I would finally move on from my father's death and everything else that held me back.

For the second round, the theme was "a lullaby." I had chosen Schubert's "Ave Maria," and the final theme was "a thunderous conclusion." For that, I had chosen Strauss's "Die Fledermaus." Since I needed an accompanist, I had asked Meg, a girl in the same class as Lucas to help me.

"On one condition," she said to me.

"What?"

"Introduce me to the younger brother."

"Eh? You want to be introduced to Tristan? Why?" I asked, genuinely surprised.

"He is so hot."

"He's twenty."

"I'm eighteen, perfect right?"

"You're too young."

"I'm the same age as you!"

"Okay, fine. I'll do it."

"Yay! Thank you Yele— uh, I mean, Lina."

After that, she spent hours on the phone talking to Tris. They would talk forever and I had to drag her off to practice with me sometimes. I called him once and asked where they had met before.

"When me and mom were on our wa to your room, I bumped into this girl and it was love at first sight," he sighed dreamily.

"Shit. Does Aryn know?"

"Yeah, but he's too busy going after this one girl from college. God, she's twenty-two and he's twenty-three!"

"She pretty?"

"Very."

"Well, good for him."

"How's it going between you and Rayne?"

"Uh, great. Oh, I've got practice. Bye Tris," I answered him truthfully.

Rayne and I saw each other at lunch and would hold hands and what not, but we didn't have time for much, especially with the Concours looming over our heads.

"Two more days," I said, coming back to the present. Jackie had been like Rayne. I rarely met her, but our friendship stayed strong. "Just two more days."

Today was the final day and Meg and I practiced the whole day. Taking only small breaks and one lunch, we worked nonstop.

"Wow, you're good for someone who's in the generals."

"Thanks, I played when I was younger. I was apparently considered a 'prodigy'."

"Wait, are you the one they were raving about years ago? The girl who was a musical genius?"

"Apparently so. I never really played attention. I used to love playing but then I stopped."

"You are a genius! I have never heard anyone play with such emotion. If you play like this, you'll even beat Rayne!"

"You know Rayne?"

"Everyone does! He's like our idol. Lucas and Rayne are like the gods of the department. They're even known in the generals, too. "

"Wow," I said breathlessly. That would explain why the music department doesn't bother us, but we always get glares and sneers from the girls.

"I know. When you and him started going out, you know how many hearts were broken?"

"W-we aren't going out!"

"Yet. Everyone can see that. He looks at you lik a starving man in the presence of a feast. Oh, and Lucas going out with Jackie? We all knew it was going to happen, but it was still a shock to some of the more fanatical girls."

I was shocked by her statement. Rayne and me. Those three words circled above my head and seemed to expand the concept farther and farther.

"Okay, let's get a good night's rest and bring it tomorrow!"

"Meg?"

"Uh-huh?"

"Thank you," I brought my voice to a whisper.

"Good luck, Lina," she said, pulling me into a hug. "Good luck."

Waking up early the next morning, Jackie helped me do my hair and fit my dress. The time flew by fast and when we were finally done, it was already noon.

"Okay, the first round does not start until three so until then, practice a little and maybe go to the stage and meet the other competitors," Jackie said

"Yeah, sure," I replied, my stomach tying knots over and over.

"Hey, relax."

I nodded my response, to nervous to answer right.

"Now go. I have to do my stuff now. Tell Lucas and Rayne I said good luck as well, okay?"

"Yeah, no problem. I'll see you later." I changed back into a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, careful not to mess up my hair. I turned to the stage and I saw six other people there including Rayne and Lucas.

"Hey, Lina!" Lucas yelled as he spotted me by the door. Rayne turned and smiled at me.

I stopped and walked over, waving back at them.

"Hey," Rayne said pulling me into a hug.

"Hey," I hugged back and immediately relaxed with him there. I released him and held his hand as I turned to the other four people.

"Oh, right. These are the other two competitors and their companions. Lina, everyone, everyone, Lina," Lucas said enthusiastically.

"Oi, introduce us properly!" a girl with short blond hair said.

"Okay, fine. Lina, this is Brittney," pointing to the blond, "and Dara," pointing to a dark haired boy.

"Hey! Don't forget about us!" another boy with tan colored hair yelled at Lucas.

"I'll save him the trouble," Rayne said to me and I giggled. "This is Mason," he pointed to the boy, "and this is Lindsey," he pointed to a girl with layered hair that were colors like grey, black, and white. It might have looked weird on anyone else, but Lindsey actually looked good with it.

"Lindsey and Mason aren't in the Councours, but they are in the music department as well. Brittney and Dara though are. Watch out for them Lina, they bite," Lucas said with an evil grin plastered on his face.

"Hey, I dare you to say that again," Brittney said.

"Okay, okay, enough you two. God I swear, you guys are like two year olds," Dara said, running a hand through his mop of hair.

"So what brings you here?" Lindsey asked me.

"Well, I wanted to see who the competitors were, oh, and Jackie wanted to tell you guys good luck," I said, giving Lucas a meaningful stare. He blushed and looked down. I was not the only one who saw this and everyone there started giggling.

"Aw, how cute. Does Lucas miss his wittle Jackie?" Mason said.

We burst out in laughter at the expense of Lucas. If Rayne had still not been holding me, I would have fallen. Instead, he also used me to help him stand through his fits of laughter.

"Shut up. Why not make fun of them," Lucas pointed at Rayne and I, "Why just me?"

"Because, it was too much of a good chance to pass it up," Rayne said squeezing his arms around my waist tighter.

"Whatever, we had all better go back and practice just a little more. The Concours start very soon," Dara reminded us.

I said goodbye to the four music department students and was then left alone with Rayne and Lucas. I gave Lucas another hug before he left and Rayne a kiss on the check.

"For good luck," I said.

He pulled me into his arms and kissed me. My brain shorted out. I couldn't think and tried hard to remember something. Anything. Even my name would have been good. He finally let me go after what seemed like a blissful forever.

"That was your good luck charm," he said to me as he let go and walked away.

I stood there, shocked and then smiled the biggest smile I had ever made. I ran all the way back to my dorm where Jackie was already waiting for me.

" Holy freakin' be-jesus! What's with you? What happened to your lip? It's all dull. I swear I put on a lot of…oh, Rayne," she said knowingly.

"Yeah Rayne."

"Damn. We can wonder what the heck happened later and get you ready for the biggest thing in your high school experience."

She pulled me to the bathroom and fixed up my make-up, hair, then told me to go outside and put on the dress. Doing just that, I stripped and put on my dress. I looked in the mirror and gasped. I had to admit it myself. I looked magnificent. I had my gown on and my hair was down in loose curls. The sides were held by two small crystal clips Aryn had gotten me as a gift. My locket hung on my neck and on my ears were sapphire earrings my mother had given me.

For the next hour I rehearsed a little with Meg, and got the last minute touches.

"You look amazing," Meg said I we stepped outside, heading for the auditorium.

"So do you." Meg was wearing a green gown, the bottom edged with intricate swirls that made it look like vines. It was long sleeved and hung off the sides of her shoulders. She wore her hair up and had small braids in various areas. She looked amazing.

"Where's Jackie?"

"Oh, she went earlier, saying she wanted front row seats."

We opened the back door and walked backstage. Everyone was already here. Lindsey and Mason were already seated in chairs since they were not allowed to be here. They all looked splendid. Dara wore a simple black suit with a tie the color of blue fire. It was a cool effect. Brittney had a gown the color of cherry blossoms. It was v-necked and had a bow that was tied to her stomach in the back. Her hair was down and hung in waves. Lucas was also in a black tux, but his tie was a simple black color that had sheen to it. His hair was still messy, but with a more artistic style. I looked over at Rayne. He wore also a black tux, but his had a hint of an Italian design on it. His tie was the same navy blue as my dress. They all looked breath-taking. I felt very insignificant compared to them.

Rayne finally looked over and stopped in his tracks when he saw me. Lucas, Dara, and Brittney all looked over to and their eyes were huge.

"Um, why are you staring at me like that? I look weird don't I?" I said worried. "Come on, say something.

"Uh. Lina? I think they're stunned," Meg said nudging at me.

"Huh?"

Rayne cleared his throat and I looked at him. "You look amazing."

My cheeks started to burn. Meg walked over to Lucas, Dara, and Brittney and all turned away from me and Rayne.

"Thank you. I could say the same about you."

"We match."

I was about to say something when we heard applause from the audience.

"Oh, god. I'm first," I said, remembering the order. I looked over at Rayne.

The lights were dimly lit, all but one single limelight. My hands were getting clammy and my breath was coming out in gasps.

"Yelena, breath," I heard him say. I listened and slowly began to breath normally again, only to gasp when I saw the size of the audience. I could no longer turn back. Not anymore. I walked out. The music began flowing through my soul and I raised my violin. This was my stage and it was time for the one thing I had been dreading and hoping for. It was the beginning of the Concours.

Meg was already in position and I gave the crowd a once-over. I gave the starting cue. Meg began to play, then as if by instinct, I began playing. I put all my feelings this and I was no longer on stage. I was at home with my parents, with my brothers. I thought of everyone I had met and the experiences they had given to me.

At last the piece was completed. I opened my eyes and saw the entire audience on their feet. I saw Jackie, Lindsey, Mason, Aryn, Tris, and even mom. They had tears in their eyes. I bowed and then left the stage with Meg at my side.

Everyone had chosen different pieces and all were absolutely amazing. Then after everyone had performed the first round, there was a break.

"Oh, jeez," I sighed, as I leaned into Rayne's arm. He started patting my head.

"Only two more to go."

"Please do not remind me," I said groaning. I looked over and I saw Meg with Tris. Aryn was with a pretty girl, probably the one Tris told me about, Lucas was standing with Jackie, while everyone else was scattered across the main lobby of the auditorium.

That night, Jackie and I had put everything back were we could get easy access of it tomorrow. We fell asleep instantly and peacefully.

The next day, they grouped together round two and three, saying that we would be able to save more time that way. We all were grateful for that, not having to have to get ready anymore after this day.

"Okay guys, this is the last one," Jackie encouraged.

"Yeah!" we all yelled and cheered as Lindsey, Mason, and Jackie headed for their seats has we headed backstage again.

I had to start first again and this time when I finished "Ave Maria," it seemed as though I had an even bigger applause than before. I watched as the others performed their pieces. They were all amazing and I was mesmerized by their professional stature.

After another short break, we went back to perform our final piece. I performed first again and ending with a big bang! I watched the others as well, paying careful attention to Rayne. He was amazing and I wouldn't have been surprised if he won.

When at last the Concours was done, we headed back to our dorms and changed to our regular clothes. We had planned to all go celebrate together.

"So, how do you think you did?" Jackie asked staring at me.

"I…I was happy with what I did. I don't care if I will win or not. I'm satisfied."

"Oh, I'm so proud of you!" she tackled me and hugged me tightly.

"Knock, knock."

We turned around and saw that everyone was already waiting for us.

"You guys don't need to be here, right outside our door you know. You'll disturb our neighbors," Jackie said with false concern.

"I know, and wouldn't that be absolutely awful?" Aryn said sarcastically, holding his girlfriend's, Sarah's, hand.

"Yes, absolutely," Tris said holding Meg.

"Well, who's driving?" I asked.

Aryn, Tris, Lucas, and Rayne were all going to drive if they were to fit everyone. We went to town and celebrated with a movie, games, pizza, and even went to the park to play hide and seek. This was one of the most fun days I ever had. The double date with Jackie, Lucas, and Rayne was great, but now, I really had everyone with me. I couldn't have been any happier.

We had two weeks off since the board had wanted time for the Concours. The next day, the results were out. I didn't care what I got. I was happy just where I was. When Lucas and Rayne woke us up early the next morning with smiles in their faces, I couldn't understand. We went downstairs as soon as Jackie and I were ready.

"Why are we up this early?" I yawned.

"Because, this is the biggest surprise ever," Rayne said leaning down against my ear and blew on it.

"Stop that!" Jackie exclaimed. "It's still early and I don't want to see any of that yet!"

They led us to the main lobby of the auditorium and I saw the results sheet. Everyone was already there and then I saw who had won first place.

"No!" I gasped.

"Yes!" they all cheered.

I had won. I had won! Against all their incredible pieces my friends played, I had won!

"Congratulations." A voice said behind me.

We all turned around and for the second time, I saw the headmaster. I looked at him and he looked strangely familiar.

"Congratulations, Ms. Barrons. I knew I made the right choice in letting you into this academy."

"Thank you." I continued to ponder where I had seen him. Then it hit me. "You spoke at my dad's funeral!"

"Ah, you remember."

"Who are you really?"

"I was your father's friend. We went here together."

"Wait, my father went here?"

"Yes, he was also considered a violin genius as well. He won the 1984 Concours."

I was stunned, then I felt tears stream down my eyes. This was the moment that I had always wanted. Surrounded by those that I love, finding about my dad, this was more emotion any melody could have given me. I didn't care about the Concours or how I had won. I had what was most important to me. I looked up again, and saw Rayne's face. He smiled at me and kissed me. I didn't care that everyone saw us. I was composing my own music. After all, this was my own personal divine melody.
