The love for a sibling.
Chapter 1: Always be there.
"Scarlett?" Ethan Hayes says.
"Hmm? Yeah?" Scarlett Hayes answers and looks up from her magazine.
"Why do girls have to be so hard to get? Why can't they just let a guy know what they're thinking?" Ethan asks.
"That's a good question" Scarlett says and puts away her magazine. "I guess it's because... a girl wants to be understood."
"Well if they want to be understood why don't they just tell us what they're thinking?" Ethan asks, looking at his sister, her blond hair in a messy bun, lying on her stomach on the bed in her sweatpants and a tank-top, looking just as beautiful as always.
"Well..." she says and sits up with her legs crossed. "Being understood isn't the same telling someone what's going on in your head. It's hard to explain. But it wouldn't be the as much fun if you knew what was going on in her head, right?"
"Yeah, I guess" he sighs and runs his hand through his blond hair.
"Is it Paige again?" she asks.
"Yeah, she's dating another one of those assholes" he sighs and she can see the pain in his marine eyes, which are a darker reflection of her own eyes.
"Well... Make a move on her then. She won't stop dating those guys unless someone else asks her out" Scarlett says.
"Well I can't ask her out until they break up" he says.
"Yeah" she agrees and goes back to her magazine.
"How's Freddie?" he asks.
"He's fine" she says with a huge smile at the mention of her fiancee Freddie Turner.
"Good" he says.
"Yeah" she smiles. "I can't believe it's only a month left until we're getting married."
"Yeah" he says, not nearly as excited as Scarlett, the feeling of losing his sister tearing at his heart. He likes Freddie it's not that. He just... Doesn't want anybody else to take his sister. It's always been the two of them. They've always had each others backs. That didn't change when she moved away from home. When she got together with Freddie they didn't meet as often as before but they knew that the other would always be there when needed. But now... When she's married... Will she still have time for him? After all he's just her brother. This is all Freddie's fault. Now Ethan would lose his sister, the one person he really trusts. Sure he trusts his friends and his parents but Scarlett isn't just his sister. She's also his best friend.
"Ethan?" Scarlett asks softly.
His head snaps up at the sound of her voice.
"Yes?" he asks quietly.
"Are you alright?" she asks but with one look at him she answers her own question. "No, you're not. What's wrong?"
"Nothing" he answers quietly and looks down at his hands, he can feel the tears in his eyes.
"That's not true" she says softly.
He just keeps looking at his hands quietly.
"Ethan..." she says and climbs off the bed and walks up to where he sits by the window.
He slowly looks up at her and she hugs him tight. And he lets the tears fall.
"What's the matter?" she whispers into his hair while he cries into her shoulder.
"Don't leave me" he sobs.
"I won't" she says.
"Yes, you will. When you're married to Freddie you won't have time for me anymore. You'll leave me" he sobs.
"Of course not! I won't leave you just because I'm married. You're my brother! I'll always have time for you. And if I'm busy sometimes that's just normal. You don't always have time for me either, but you're always there for me even if it's not just the second I need you and it's the same with me. And if you think that I won't have time for you just because I'm married to Freddie, you're wrong" she grabs his chin to make him look at her. "Do you understand what I'm saying?"
He nods and then holds on to her like his life depended on it and she wraps her arms around him.
"I'll never leave you" she whispers in his ear.
"And I'll never leave you" he answers.
They break the hug when the phone rings.
"I'll get it" she says and walks out in the hallway and down the stairs to the phone. "Hayes"
"Scarlett?" a girl asks.
"Paige?" she asks.
"Yes. What are you doing there?" Paige asks rudely.
"Well my family lives here"
"That doesn't answer my question"
"Well I don't have to explain to you why I'm at my parents' place. Now did you want something or did you just call to mess with me?"
"I want to talk to Ethan"
"Of course you do. But you better understand that if you ever hurt him in anyway I'm gonna make you wish you weren't born" Scarlett puts the phone down and walks back to her old room where Ethan sits. "Who was it?" he asks.
"Paige. She wants to talk to you" Scarlett answers and sits down on the bed again.
"What? She wants to talk to me?" he asks in disbelief.
"Yeah"
"Are you serious?"
"Yeah"
Ethan runs down the stairs to the phone.
"Hello?"
"Ethan? Hi"
"Hi. What's up?"
"I wanted to talk to you"
"Okay"
"Yeah"
"About?"
"Well... Do you know your sister is a bitch?"
"What?" He didn't see that one coming.
"She's always so rude to me. She's never spoken nicely to me. And the way she dresses... that's just awful. And she thinks she's beautiful and stuff but she just... not. I don't think she'll ever get..."
"Is that why you called?" he cuts her off, flatly. "To insult my sister?"
"Yeah, I guess"
"Well I can tell you something Paige. You better hope I don't hear you insulting Scarlett ever again, 'cause if I do I'll make you regret every single word you've ever said about her. Do you understand me?" His voice is low and full of poison.
"Are... are you threatening me?" she stutters.
"Yes" he growls and hangs up.
He stands there looking at the phone, thinking about what he just did until Scarlett's voice takes him back to the present.
"Ethan?" She's still in her old room.
"Yeah?"
"Mum and dad aren't coming home from that concert soon are they?" She walks out of the room and to the stairs.
"No. Why?" He looks at her confused while she leans against the railing.
"I want candy" She smiles.
"I'll see what we have" he smiles back and walks into the kitchen.
"What did Paige want?" she walks into the kitchen after him and sits on the counter. "Nothing" he sighs and rummages the cupboards for candy.
"You mean she only called to be ru..." she cuts herself off.
"Yeah, I guess" he pulls out a few different kinds of candy.
"What did she say?" She asks, still on the counter, seeing his troubled expression.
"Nothing important" he mutters but won't look up at her. "Let's go up."
She follows him upstairs and watches him sit down on the bed.
"Ethan" she makes him look at her. "What did she say?"
He sighs but answers: "She insulted you."
"That's it?" when he nods she continues. "I thought she did something stupid" she sighs in relieve.
"What do you mean? What can be worse than her insulting you?"
"Her insulting you. Her hurting you. But I guess my threat helped."
"You threatened her?"
"Yeah, sorry but I had too."
"Well I just... So did I."
"You're kidding?"
"No. I told her that if she ever insulted you I'd make her regret every word."
"You said that to her? Aww. Thank you, but it wasn't necessary. It wasn't but I'm glad you did it anyway" she says when he opens his mouth to disagree. "I told her that if she ever hurt you I'd make her wish she was never born."
"Anything for you sis. And you're so sweet. I can't believe you told her that."
"Well I don't want you to get hurt, you're my baby brother. I'd do anything for you" she hugs him.
"I love you sis" he says.
"I love you to bro" she smiles. "Now give me candy."
A/N: Tell me what you think. Do you like it?
Do you want to meet Freddie? Or should I just stop here?
I'm thinking about making another chapter, but I'd like to know what you think.
