"I'll be right back," the doctor said as he stood up.
"Okay, I'll wait," replied Amanda, who was sitting in a chair beside him.
The doctor left his patient alone in the tiny room.
Amanda watched him leave and kept looking through the doorway. No one passed by, and the clinic was silent. She then looked at the file cabinet that was across the room. Following another peek into the hallway, she rushed to the middle drawer and opened it. Thumbing through the folder tabs, she pulled out the paperwork of the first female name she could find and closed the drawer.
Quickly, she went back to her seat and opened her bag. Keeping her eyes on the doorway, she folded the papers and stuffed them into her bag.
Five minutes had passed when the doctor returned. By this time, Amanda had fully composed herself. The doctor escorted her back to the lobby, and she left the clinic raising no suspicion.
Two months later, Natalie's phone rang. She picked it up and answered it.
"Hello, Natalie?" the woman on the other line questioned.
"Yes, this is she."
"Good afternoon, this is Lisa, representative of SecureNet. How are you?"
"Great. Natalie, do you, by any chance, plan on moving to Colorado?"
"Nope. I still live in New York."
"Because we've just received a report stating that you bought a two-story house in Colorado yesterday. It appears someone used your personal information, including name and social security number, to purchase it. Do you have any idea how they could have gotten that?"
"No. I've never even been to Colorado before."
"Well, we are contacting the authorities and credit bureaus to assist you in getting your identity back. The good news is, they did not use your credit card, but we can't be too careful, you know. Just as a reminder, my name is Lisa, and I'm your assigned recovery specialist."
"Thanks, Lisa. Is this going to cost extra?"
"Not at all. Everything is covered under the $19.95 per month you pay anyway for our monitoring service."
The moral of the story is, identity theft can be as easy as taking files from a doctor's office. With over 10,000 victims per month, it is not a question of "If", but "When" you will become the next victim. Nothing can prevent it, but AmeriPlan can assist you in monitoring and restoring your identity, at a very low monthly price.
