The Rose Garden Princess

"A queen is asking us to protect a princess sounds like the same old same old to me," I say to Tristan, Tristan is my best friend we grew up together and trained as knights together he has brown hair and green eyes. "yeah but it's a job and we need money especially because you like running up a tab at every restaurant we go to Lucifer," he says sighing ,"I can't help if I like expensive food better than bread and butter I mean how do you stay so healthy on that stuff," I say protesting, "trust me you learn how to make due," he says, "only proves my point," I say to him, "well we can only thank the lord you don't like wine or alcohol for that matter," he says, "god that stuff is nasty I don't get why the adults like it so much," I say back, "well lets get a move on the job doesn't do itself you know," he says getting up, "yeah your right but how do we get there we don't have anymore money for travel and we don't have horses," I say complaining, "its not that far we'll walk," he says, "huh isn't the castle like five miles away that will take forever," I say protesting, "I guess your right and the queen said she was going to have a feast with only the finest food," he says knowing I would go if there was food involved, "you know me to while my friend, come on their is food waiting for us at the castle," I say following him. On the way there I was thinking why we were requested specifically we aren't very well known or anything. We get there at around noon since we left at 8 in the morning. Some guy announces that were there and we see the queen and she tells us the details of our job I don't really pay attention all I heard was you get free meals that's all I care about Tristan will tell me the details later. "Come on we have to greet the princess," Tristan whispers I nod and follow speaking of which princess's usually meet the guests when they come like the queen did.

Tristan knocks on the door, "come in," a gentle voice says Tristan opens the door and we head in and I close the door once I entered. "Good after noon princess," Tristan says politely, "same to you but please call me Rose," she says normally, "my name is Tristan and this is Lucifer," Tristan says to her, "he doesn't talk much is he shy or something I swear I don't bite," she says, "sorry he can be a little rude sometimes but trust me he's just nervous around girls," he says smiling she giggles, "who's nervous around girls I could have sworn yesterday you couldn't even talk to our waitress without stuttering," I say smirking he blushes, "I was wondering how you got those," she says pointing at me I think about it for a little bit and figure out what she's talking about, "oh you mean my cat ears and tail it's a long story I don't want to bore you with the details," I say to her, "oh okay but please if you do ever want to tell me I'll lend a ear," she says with a smile I get a slit blush as I do I realize her emerald eyes and short black hair and slightly pale skin. "its pretty fun to mess with them I'm even tempted sometimes," he says to her, "its true he even messes with them when I'm asleep," I say she giggles, "I only did that once," he says getting mad but I laugh it off. I don't dread the spell as much as a regular person would I mean being different in such a way could make you be called a monster but I've been lucky unlike a black cat like me should. "Master Tristan the queen wants to see you alone," a servant comes in and says, "See you later Princess," he says leaving. "I thought I told him to call me Rose," she says, "you do know if he was to call you by your first name in front of a servant the servant could tell and he would get in trouble," I say to her, "I guess your right but he could of called me miss Rose if that was the case," she says, "what's wrong with being called princess?" I ask. "I don't want to be called something I'm not," she says, that just made me a little more curious then I already am. "What am I saying I'm living in a castle and wear beautiful dresses who wouldn't call me a princess," she says trying to hide what she just said.

"You know if you don't like it here you can always run away," I say to her, "if only if only," she says back. A servant comes in through the door, "master Lucifer the queen wants to see you now," he says to me I nod, "see you later miss Rose," I say following the servant out the door. We walk to the throne room where I hope Tristan is because I don't want to talk to royalty alone. When the servant lets me in the throne room I notice that Tristan isn't there I frown I'm alone in this awful situation. I enter the room with a neutral face so I don't look depressed; as I do the servant closes the door behind me. "Hello Lucifer," the queen says to me I kneel out of respect the little I have I learned from Tristan. "You may rise," she says I rise after she says this. She has curly red hair and brown eyes and tan skin. She looked nothing like Rose maybe Rose looked like a girl version of her father that would be fun to see. "What did you want to see me about Queen Heather," I say recalling her name I heard out of pure luck. "My daughter Rose I want to review your task so you don't forget it," she said almost like she was threatening me, "you are to protect her no matter what from kidnapping, assassins, and herself," she says that last part made me want to ask "what do you mean by herself," but I held my tongue for curiosity killed the cat and it would probably lead to that situation if I did ask. "she is not allowed outside the castle for any reason at all and can't leave her room without escort from you or sir Tristan," she says quickly to get it over with, "you are dismissed and be sure to be ready soon we are having a feast," she says grinning that made the hair on my neck stand up I nod and leave the room. I hope Tristan is in our room I want to ask him something so I can quench my curiosity. I walk to our quarters in the castle that the servants showed us earlier on are way to Rose's room. I open the door and Tristan is there it put a smile on my face I don't think I could live a day without seeing my best friend. "Yo," he says as I close the door behind me I wave, "how was your talk with the queen," he asks me I sigh, "scary as hell I didn't know what to do after she said rise," I say to him sitting on my bed, "but why call us separately I wonder," I say he shrugs, "hey you can't wear that to the feast tonight here," he says throwing me some formal attire, "I see you came prepared unlike me," I say to him as I take off my shirt to change he seemed to be doing the same thing so I just followed, "you still have those scars I see," he says to me as I button my shirt, "yeah I just think of it as constant reminder of that day," I say to him, "it wasn't your fault Lucifer it was that damn witches," he says to me angrily he can say that all he wants I know it was my fault I know it was and I don't want to be forgiven for it I want to keep that memory close even if it was horrible for me and the people around me. Tristan looks out the window as I put the finishing touches on my formal attire, "do you know how to dance?" he asked me, "yeah I'm ok why?" I answer with another question, "well it looks like were going to a party," he says, I put a dagger in my jacket, "why are you bringing that?" he asks me I smirk, "I should ask you the same question my friend," I say to him, "I see you saw that, I guess you can never be to careful," he says. There's a knock at the door, "come in," I say Tristan slaps his forehead I guess I did something wrong. The door opens and Rose is there wearing a red dress it has short sleeves and a black bow at the back. She looked beautiful like a true rose should; she also had a tiara on that had exquisite detail. "You two ready," she says with a smile I nod trying not to blush when I looked at Tristan I saw he couldn't hold it in because his whole face was as red as a tomato. "Are you ok Tristan you don't look well," she says I laugh, "He's fine just a little flustered," I say Tristan got mad about my comment. "Let's go," I say to both of them. All three of us leave the room Tristan closes the door and we head down the stairs and Rose leads the way to the ballroom.

"Wow it's big," I say trying to distract myself from how many people there were. "Yeah I know a little too big I think," Rose says to me. I start to look for the food after all I haven't eaten since breakfast and that was long ago. Rose is trailing along why is she following me I mean she could have went with Tristan I stop and she runs into me I hear her mutter a word of pain and I feel kind of bad for it, "why did you stop in front of me," she asks complaining, "I was wondering why you were following me," I say to her, "I wasn't following you I'm looking for the food!" she says to me angered by my question, "really that's what I'm looking for," I say to her, "I guess birds of a feather flock together," she says moving on. I lost her in the crowd of people maybe she wanted to be alone but I don't see why we were looking for the same thing. I walked forward and finally found the food I grabbed a biscuit and some mashed potato's I wasn't as hungry as I was before so I didn't want to take much. I saw Rose against the back wall; the rose had become a wallflower I thought to myself. Suddenly about two men went to her I didn't liked the way it looked so I went over and just listened for the time being, "come on princess dance with us we won't bite," one of the men said he was pretty good looking but he was a nobleman so he could afford the best treatment, "no I don't dance with men like you," she said not lifting her head. Then one of the men grabbed her wrist swiftly, "now we don't care for pretty girls with attitude princess," he said smirking I stepped in, "unhand her," I said unattaching his hand from hers, "look it's a stray cat saving the day," he said to me that really made me mad but I held my ground the other guy was just standing behind him, "hey he's one of those knights we heard about we should go," the guy said, "you won't be so lucky next time," he says as he walks away I hold my stance until I couldn't see him anymore, "you ok?" I ask her she nods, "good," I say with a smile, she looks up, "are you okay I mean you looked angry when he called you a stray cat," she said curiously, "yeah I'm fine thanks," I say smiling she smiles back. She stares at the people dancing like she was yearning to be them. "Would you like to dance," I say putting my hand out, "sure I'd love to," she says grabbing my hand. I lead her to the dance floor once we got there I put my hand on her waist and she put hers on my shoulder and we danced. I twirled her every few steps she just smiled, "you're very good," she says while we dance, "you're not bad yourself," I said with a smile she smiled back, "I haven't had so much fun in my life," she says, it was true I could tell she was gleaming with joy. "poor Tristan," she says looking to the side, I saw him and he was surround by girls all wanting to dance with him and I saw guys sighing, "I feel more sorry for the guys," I say to her, "yeah I guess your right," she says laughing. Tristan makes his way to the dance floor with a blonde haired girl with blue eyes he starts dancing near us, "you two seem to be having fun," Tristan says to us while dancing near us, "yeah you seem to be having fun yourself," I say to him still dancing, "don't remind me," he says with a sigh, "I hope those guys aren't too mad," Rose says, "yeah I don't want to have to drag you back to our room Tristan," I say jokingly, "yeah I hear you," he says. A girl walks over toward Rose and I, "may I cut in," she says the girl looked like a younger version of the queen, "sure sis," Rose says letting go of my hand, she has a sister I looked over toward Tristan he shrugged. Rose's sister grabbed my hand and my shoulder and lead the dance I wasn't really paying attention to her I was to busy watching Rose leave the dance floor she looked back toward us with a sad look and then walked on. "I'm sorry she bothered you," she says to me I look at her, "my name is Azalea," she says, another flower she's definitely poisonous I thought, "my name is Lucifer," I say to her she lets go of me, "a good name for a cat," she says and walks away, "hey lets find Rose and go," Tristan says, his left cheek was red he must have said something wrong to the girl and then she slapped him. "Okay," I say too him. I look for Rose and find her against the wall like a wallflower, I walk over, "you okay?" I ask her, she nods, "how was dancing with my sister," she asks, "it wasn't as fun as dancing with you," I said she blushed, "Tristan got slapped so he wants to leave I don't mind either way but what do you want to do," I say to her she giggled at the first part, "I also want to leave," she says, "then shall we," I say she nods and we look for Tristan he was easier to find he saw us and then just followed us up.

I dropped off Rose at her room and then went down stairs to Tristan's and my room. I opened the door to our room, "you're hopeless," he says, "huh what did I do this time," I say to him then it struck me I was supposed to take first watch, "sorry I forgot," I say to him, "hey its okay I'll take first watch," he says leaving. He was mad I could tell but I won't stop him its best to leave him alone. I was alone myself but I didn't like it. I lay on the bed and close my eyes and dreamt a memory. I'm in my home town in the valley. Nothing really happens there it was nice and peaceful I was thirteen. "Lucifer lets do some sparing," Tristan says to me I nod and follow him he grabs the wooden swords and hands me one, "one, two, three, and start," he says charging toward me I blocked his attack. His left side was open so I hit his stomach and then hit his head he fell and cried uncle there was clapping coming from behind me I turned around it was my little sister. I bowed, "thank you very much for the show," she says I smile Tristan gets up and grabs my shoulder, "it was a good spar if I do say so myself," he says, "what do you mean you lost in five seconds," I say to him she giggled, "you guys want to go see the fortune teller with me today is her last day here," she asks us we both nod. "I know what I'm going to ask her," Tristan says, "what are you going to ask," I ask him already knowing the answer, "if we are going to become knights or not stupid," he says, "I know for a fact that you two will be the best knights in the kingdom," she says to us. We get to the plaza where the fortune teller sets up shop there wasn't a very long line and there wasn't many people in the plaza the three of us get in line to see the fortune teller.

It was finally my turn I walked inside the small tent all that was in there was a old lady, a table, two chairs, tarot cards, and a crystal ball. "Welcome," she says in her rasping voice, "hi," I say nervously as I sit down. "What is your question child?" she asks me, "I don't really have one maybe if you can just tell me what's in the near future," I say to her she puts both hands on the crystal ball and mutters what sounds like gibberish, "you will make a deal with the devil to save someone close to you a curse will befall you and you will be called a monster behind your back," she says with a scary smirk that made the hair on my neck stand, "thanks old lady but I think your just telling me rubbish," I say coolly but deep down I believed her I paid her then left the tent. "how did it go," Tristan asked me, "rubbish," I replied, "how about you any good news," I asked him changing the topic he nodded, "she said that we would become knights for a princess but then she said something bad like we would become fugitives of that country," he said confused at the last part after that Tristan practiced politeness and what you did or didn't do in front of royalty. "what about you sis," I asked her she tensed for a second and then said, "rubbish," she then looked down, "we should get home before it gets dark Lucifer," she said she was right it was sunset, "ok sis I'll see you tomorrow Tristan," I say, "okay I'll see you tomorrow Lucifer and be good Lillian," he said with a smile. We walked away and Lillian waved Tristan waved goodbye back.

We crossed the bridge and then made our way through the forest. Lillian grabbed my arm, she didn't like the forest. A twig broke behind us I turned quickly to face what it was; a pack of wolves. They growled at us.

"Lucifer I'm scared," Lillian whispered.

"Get behind me," I whispered to her, "were going to back away slowly okay?" I whispered to her again we took one slow step at a time. She then stepped on a twig and one of them pounced on me. I quickly grabbed a stick to block the attack and Lillian screamed. Then one attacked her, I quickly pushed the one on me off, and hit the one on Lillian. It got off and bit my arm while another one scratched my back. I attacked more vigorously, causing them to back off and run quickly back into the darkness. I went toward Lillian; she was crying in pain and was continuously bleeding. "It's going to be okay," I said trying to comfort her but she was dying. I need to save her, "Someone help!" I yell loudly with tears in my eyes. Lillian had stopped crying and her eyes became empty like all life had left her, "Somebody help," I screamed, bawling loudly. I heard footsteps and when I looked up it was the old fortune teller from earlier. "Save her!" I begged.

"I can save her if you make a deal with me," she said with that scary smirk. It didn't scare me this time; I just wanted her to save Lillian.

"I don't care what you do to me, just save her damn it!" I said to her,

"As you wish. A curse will befall you, making you a misfortunate creature," she said, speaking gibberish once again, a misfortunate creature I seem to deserve such a fate. Everything went black, had I also died was what I saw just an illusion. I heard crying someone saying my name someone familiar, "Lucifer wake up!" someone yelled shaking me. I opened my eyes and saw Tristan, "Tristan? I'm alive, wait where's Lillian," I say getting up quickly, I felt no pain but wasn't I just attacked by wolves, "I see you had that dream again you had me worried," he said calming down, that's right that was three years ago it seemed so real I guess a memory is as real as you remember it. I looked down, "I wish it was just a dream," I said angrily, "hey stop blaming yourself no one can change fate no matter how hard you try," Tristan said calmly. I grabbed his, "no matter how many times you say that, she died all because of me!" I yelled at him.
