The Shahada

You walk inside and look around
"Asalaamu alaikum"
Words greeting you from everyone
Setting the tone of the room

A bright blush creeps into your face
Your hand finds your hijab
You've never worn one 'til today
Hope you did a good job

The welcomes from the others
Said so softly like a song
The hole in your life closes
As you've found where you belong

All the sins of your past
And pain that you suffered before
Are rinsed clean from your sould
They do not matter anymore

Everybody calls you "sister" now
And you feel moved to tears
Your thoughts of being all alone
Become invalid fears

The chains of who you were
Slowly fade; they are erased
By new hope and new faith
A strength that cannot be replaced
