I fixed my hair one last time, checking in the car mirror, before hopping out of the passenger side door. I moved to stand beside Phil, my husband, and took his hand, steadying myself with a deep breath.

"Calm down, it's only a year twelve reunion." He whispered in my ear, and I flashed a smile at him.

"I know, but we'll be seeing people we haven't seen in ten years. Maybe Bambi and Kris got married or something, you know? They might have even broken up and now hate each others guts!" I whispered back as we walked towards the Harristown State High School auditorium.

"I doubt it." He whispered back. "They were madly in love, and I wouldn't be surprised if they did get married."

We stepped in the hall and were almost immediately swamped by our old friends.

"Oh my god, Allegra, Phil!" A mature-looking Dani said as she hugged us, and Tazia hung back, grinning. "You two are looking good. Especially you, Ally."

"Ally, Phil! They're here, Ryan!" Chase spotted us as well and pulled the other man over, giving the both of us a big hug.

"We missed you guys!" Ryan said, grinning and clapping us both on the back.

Dani was inspecting a suspicious gold band around Phil's ring finger, ignoring what was going on around her. Suddenly she grabbed my left hand and put it beside Phil's, examining the matching rings on our fingers.

"Oh my god! You two are married!" She exclaimed, and Phil slid his arm around my waist.

"And enjoying every minute of it." His voice sent tingles down my spine, and I grinned at my friends.

"So, have you got any kids yet?" Tazia asked, and Phil shook his head in a negative. I kept silent, unnoticed by everyone except Dani, who thankfully didn't say anything.

"Phil, Al! Stop standing in the doorway and get your ass over here!" A voice called out, and when we saw Bambi and Kris holding two young girls who were so obviously theirs AND twins, we just had to laugh.

"Told you so." Phil whispered in my ear before leading the gang over to them and catching up on what had been happening in our life so far.

Dani pulled me slightly to the side so the others would hear and grinned.

"So you're pregnant, and he doesn't know?" She whispered to me, and I smiled at her.

"Yeah, but don't worry. I was going to tell him tonight, in front of everyone." I whispered back, and she looked at me, shocked.

"Everyone? What are you going to do, get up on stage and announce it over the microphone when the Principal asks if anyone has any announcements?" She asked me, incredulously. I nodded at her and she clapped her hands in joy.

"Don't tell a soul, though. Please Dani, not even Tazia." I begged her, and she solemnly crossed her heart, her way of promising.

The night went well, everyone having fun, remembering all the good times, laughing over the silly things that seemed so terribly important back then, poking fun at the slide show that showed all the horrible pictures of us in high school and getting embarrassed whenever one of ourselves appeared, and getting to know everyone again.

The principal stood up on stage, and everyone fell silent, waiting for the huge speech that generally accompanied everything that had to do with school. He surprised us.

"Hey everyone, I am Mr Harvey, the current Principal of Harristown State High. We have here, a teacher from your year twelve year who had something to do with everyone in this room, but I won't go into too much detail. Hope you've all had loads of fun, and gotten to know each other again. Now, I really have to hand this off to her, she's really getting impatient. Never was a patient one, was she, that Mrs Barker?" He joked and we all laughed as Mrs Barker walked onto the stage and took the microphone off him and told him off for taking so long.

A cough behind me caught my attention, and I turned to see the old gang, with Megan still in the lead, putting on their bitchy poses and looking straight at us.

"Well, well, well. Look what the cat dragged in." Megan said, gaining the attention of everyone else.

"Go away Megan." I said, trying to focus on what Mrs Barker was saying.

"Hmph. No smart aleck remark this time, huh Allegra? Too bad, I was looking forward to shoving your faces in the dirt this time losers." She said, flicking a strand of dirty, obviously dyed blonde hair out of her pale, waxy face. The tips of her fingers were yellow and her eyes were bloodshot. And everyone in the group mirrored her.

"Look who's talking? You look as though you belong on that old show with the sick people that was around ten years ago. What was it? Oh yeah, House. Though I'm not sure he'd be able to help you." Bambi said, looking at the anorexic girls and pasty skin.

"I am beautiful, thank you! And you people are just plain hideous." She said, crossing her arms. "Besides, what have you done for society lately?"

"A lot more than you have." Ryan said, turning to ignore them.

"Alright, we want volunteers for a few questions. Any volunteers?" Mrs Barker called, and I put up my hand.

"Come one guys, put your hands up." I hissed at them, and they followed suit, not really sure why they were doing it.

"Okay! Well, come up here, guys!" She waved her hand for us to walk up, and I dragged the gang up to the stage. "Well, we're going to ask you a few questions about your lives. So here we go. Line up please."

We lined up in a row, going Kris, Bambi, Dani, Tazia, Chase, Ryan, Phil, and then me, and the questions started.

"What's your current job?"

"I own a sports shop."

"I work in his sports shop."

"I work at the Red Cross Foundation, helping people."

"I'm a hairdresser at Vivian's Women's Hair Salon."

"Day Care owner."

"Any kids?"

"No." Phil, Tazia, Dani, Kris and Bambi said.

"Well, we adopted a South African kid last year, so technically yeah." Chase and Ryan said, and we all cheered. I kept silent.

It went on like this, and I watched Megan's jaw dropped as she realized that we were good, honest citizens who all contributed to society in some way or another.

"Lastly, any announcements?"

We all looked at each other, and Kris and Bambi stepped forward.

"We got married last year."

"Us too." Dani and Tazia stepped forward, earning a few gasp from some people, but most of the crowd cheered for them.

"We actually got married three years ago." Chase and Ryan stepped forward, getting claps on the back and congratulations from everyone on stage.

"Well. Don't we feel old, Ally?" Phil said as we stepped for. "We've been married for seven years."

"And no kids yet?" Someone called out from the crowd, and he rubbed the back of his head. I stepped even further forward, and turned back to face Phil.

"Well actually…" I faced the crowd again. "I'm pregnant!"

"What?" I heard Phil's reaction, and then I was being swung up into his arms, as he picked me up. "How come I didn't learn about this before?"

"I wanted it to be a surprise." I said, wrapping my arms arm his neck.

"You certainly do enjoy surprising me." He said. I just laughed and pulled him into a kiss, making us both forget about everyone watching. They all started whistling and screaming, and I smiled into the kiss.

"I love you." I whispered to him, happily laying my head on his shoulder as he held me.

"I still can't believe you didn't tell me." Phil said, walking to the drivers side door and opening it.

"Yeah, but this way was better." I said, sliding into the passenger seat.

"I suppose." He replied, pulling out of the school grounds.

Our children were born on the third of November 2020, exactly eight months after the school reunion. They had his eyes, and my hair. We named the little boy Phillip Andrew Matthews after his father, and the little girl Alana Jane Matthews, because if you really think about it, it was all because of that girl Alana I had these two angels.

So, I thank her.
