Blooded Heart

Chapter 2

The next night was going to be interesting. It will be the first time going out to the laundry mat with Karlin and Sammy. I did not know how well this was going to go since, tell you the truth, I never been to one. I thought to myself that it was sad that I don't know how to even clean my own clothes. I gathered some of my outfits, thinking they may need a good cleaning.

I arrived at Karlin's place and they were all ready to go. Sammy came running over and gave me a big hug.

"I missed you Van." Sammy said as she gave me a kiss on the cheek.

"Now that was a cute picture" Karlin said as she looked at her camera.

"You just didn't take a picture of Sammy giving me a kiss did you? I just might have to put you into the laundry for that." I said will a smile.

"You just might. Anyway, are you ready to go Sammy?" Karlin asked.

"Yes mommy I am ready." Sammy said as she hugged her stuffed bear tightly. "Can Van carry me to the laundry mat mommy?" Sammy asked looking all cute and innocent.

"Ask Van." Karlin said as she picked up her clothes basket.

"Come here you little monster." I said as I scooped her up in my arms. Sammy giggled and hugged me again.

We arrived at the laundry mat and it seemed strange to me. I had no clue what I was about to get into. We took the clothes to the washers. Karlin opened it up and I had to take a look. Sammy started to giggle and took my hand.

"Silly Van, you don't put yourself in the machine. You put the clothes in there." Sammy said still giggling. I smiled and picked her up.

"I think someone needs a bath. Let's put you in there." I said laughing. Sammy struggled and I started to tickle her. Sammy had a bit of a humor. I always thought it was cute. Karlin came over and handed me some quarters.

"Here I thought you might want to put them in the washer." Karlin looked at me and noticed that I was confused. "Do you know how to put quarters in?" Karlin asked.

"Sad to say, no, I never used the laundry mat to do my clothes. I always did them by hand." I said knowing that I was starting to blush. Karlin laughed and came over to show me how to place the quarters in the machine. It looked easy, and Sammy was having a blast laughing at all the little things that made me look silly and stupid. Spending time with my human friends was the best thing that ever happened to me. Sometimes I still wish there was a way to become human again.

We finished up the laundry and headed on home. Sammy fell asleep in my arms and Karlin was falling asleep herself. We put all the clothes away and I placed Sammy in bed. As I tucked her in, a memory had come to mind. It was a flashback to the last night I tucked my son into bed. A sudden sadness hit me hard. I sat in a nearby chair and started to cry. Karlin herd the sobbing and walked into Sammy's room.

"Van you ok? What's wrong?" Karlin said as she laid a hand on my shoulder.

"I thought of my son came to me. I miss my family more than you know. There is nothing that I can do now about it. I know I have to let them go, but I am afraid that I may forget them and lose all memory of them." I said as I wipe a tear from my face.

"I know there is no way that you will be able to forget them. You love them to much to forget. For as long as I have known you Van, you don't miss or forget a thing. Come and eat something. I have some new food for you to try." Karlin said as she left the room. I soon followed and sat at the table.

"So what do you have for me today?" I asked hoping it was going to be something really good.

"I made spaghetti for you. It has some meatballs with it. I hope you like it." Karlin said as she sat the plate on the table. I took a bite and was in love with food once again.

"This spaghetti is delicious! You have once again made my night. I was wondering if you and Sammy would like to come visit my place sometime. I bet you guys would love it. Then I will make you guys something that I used to make when I was human. It's an old recipe of my mother's. I know you would like it. Well I better head on out. If you need anything let me know." I hugged Karlin and went to go and kiss Sammy good-night. I headed out the balcony doors and made my way home.

As I got ready for bed, I thought of giving Karlin a gift of some kind. I looked through my chest of belongings and found one of my mother's old necklaces. It had an amethyst in the center of a pendent. The pendent had Celtic knots on the border and had tiny diamonds within the border. I knew she would like it. I had decided that she should be the next one to take care of it. I placed it into a small, velvet box and wrapped it in a red cloth. I tied it off with a golden ribbon. It was perfect. I placed it onto my dresser and got ready for bed. Tomorrow was going to be great, I knew it.

The nights were coming earlier and the nights became colder. Fall was right around the corner. took my long black trench coat out of my closet and put it on. It felt good wearing it again. I put the velvet box in my pocket and headed out the door.

I arrived at Karlin's and entered my usual way through the balcony doors. Sammy was watching TV and Karlin in the kitchen. Sammy saw me enter the room and ran over to give me a hug.

"Hi Van!" She said with excitement when she leaped into my arms. "I missed you. Are you going to be staying for dinner? Mommy made hamburgers and hot dogs. Come on Van come try some." Sammy said taking me by the hand and leading me into the kitchen.

"Hi Kar, Mmm that smells good. I can not wait to eat!" I said as I took in the delicious aroma.

"Well I have to run down to the store to get a couple of things that I forgot. Would you like to come along with us?" Karlin asked me as she was looking in the cupboard.

"Sure I would love to. I have a question. Could you get me a pack of cigarettes? I ran out. Since I don't have an ID so I can't get them." I asked as I gave a smile.

"That won't be a problem. Come on Sam. Let's go and get your coat." Karlin said as she walked to the closet. We took our time walking down to the store. We talked about Sammy starting school soon and that it will be different with Karlin having to work a different shift at the hospital.

"Yeah the Hospital became short handed. I have to work some double shifts and I don't have anyone to watch Sammy when I am at work. It's during the night hours and I was wondering if you will be able to watch over her while I am at work." Karlin asked.

"Sure I would love to. You know I would do anything for you. You both are like a family to me." I said looking into Karlin's beautiful blue eyes. I could get lost in those eyes of hers. Something inside told me that she could bring me piece within my heart, but I wasn't sure if I was ready for love.

We walked in the store and Karlin went to go look for the stuff she needed. Sammy took me over to the drink fountain and pointed to the slushy machine.

"Van came you help me get a slushy? I like the blue one." Sammy said as she looked up at me and smiled.

"Well I'm not sure how to work the machine. Can you show me what to do?" I said felling a little bit embarrassed.

"It's easy. You get a cup and pull the handle to put the slushy in the cup, but make sure the cup is there to catch it or you will make a big mess." Sammy handed me a cup and after a "few" tries, I finally got the hang of it. Sammy laughed at everything I did wrong. Karlin had to come over to see what the commotion was all about.

"You guys know how to make a mess. I think I might have to hold both of your hands to make sure you don't get in trouble." Karlin laughed and paid for the stuff.

Our walk home was fun. Sammy and I drank our slushies and stuck our tongues out at each other.

"Your tongue is blue Sammy." I said as she stuck her tongue out at me. I stuck mine out and she began to giggle.

"Your tongue is green." Sammy said giggling. An idea came to mind and I whispered to Sammy to stick her tongue out when I got Karlin's attention.

"Hey, Karlin. Check this out." Both me and Sam stuck out our tongues and laughed. Before I knew it I saw a flash from a camera. "Did you just take our picture? Well guess what, I think me and Sammy just might have to take some pictures of you, especially when you are sleeping. That would be the best." I said smiling. Karlin smiled and gave a sneaky kind of smile.

"We shall see." Karlin said as she put the camera back into her pocket. Thoughts ran through my head and thought of ways to take pictures of Karlin while she slept. It was just to good to let an opportunity like this to pass by.
