One last breath

He lay on the bed, his body numb and limp
He was unable to move, unable to speak and
Unable to feel.

She sat beside him holding his cold, white hand
And caressing his cheek with her fingers.
While she cried endlessly, looking at his pale face.
He already looked dead
Except for the heaving of his chest.

His eyes, circled with black
Were closed, so he could not see
The tear stricken face of his most beloved,
He could not see
The pain she was going through
As she held the man she loved
For what could be the last time.

Each breath of his was a miracle
Each movement one of his last.
She kissed his pale lips
Not afraid of the sickness
Which had stolen his life.

She could not imagine living
While he did not exist.
A world without him seemed impossible to her.
All she could see in her future was darkness.
All she could feel was grief, anger
And fear of what would happen.

She decided that she would follow him
After he was gone.
Suddenly he opened his eyes
For the first time in days,
And turned towards her with a look
Which shattered her heart.

He squeezed her hand with all his strength
And with one last breath he said "I love you".
