The odd thing about this song is that I got the idea playing man-hunt with my two cousins and brother. I was hiding in the back of my dad's pickup truck. (What? The rule was we can't hide INSIDE cars. I was out in the open, so don't call it cheating!) I was just lying there, waiting for my cousin to find me in my incredibly obvious hiding place, staring at the sky. Perhaps it was so obvious he didn't think to look there, because it was probably 45 minutes that I spent there. I looked at the stars and imagined just floating up there as they covered me like glitter. I thought of perhaps writing a song about that, but then another thought came to me. Stars, of course, aren't that small. They're huge, bigger than the sun. They just look small because they're so far away. It's true, small can be beautiful in many ways. But we only tend to look at the small and the beautiful, without ever thinking to touch.

From a Distance

Beauty lies in every star tonight

But you only think so of the ones that seem to shine the most

You don't know the rest are just as bright

They're just so far away, and you don't want to reach that far

But they can't come down to you

And show you they're not so small

They have shined, too

All this time for you

Why can't you hear their call?

They're all alone

Waiting for you to reach out

Why do you stay there on the ground?

You say that you can't live like this; there must be something more

You won't feel it looking from a distance

You have to be with them and see they're all you were looking for

But they can't come down to you

And show you they're not so small

They have shined, too

All this time for you

Why can't you hear their call?

They're all alone

Waiting for you to reach out

Everyone knows what they are

And what makes them seem so insignificant

So why do you leave them there?

They can't come down to you

And show you they're not so small

They have shined, too

All this time for you

Why can't you hear their call?

They're all alone

Waiting for you to reach out

Beyond the surface

Beneath the veil

They remain untouched

Waiting for you to reach out

At first I thought of explaining the real meaning in the actual song. But then I thought it would be better to leave it like this, and see how people interpreted it. I find it fairly simple because I experience it all the time. But for those who haven't it's best to make them think. So tell me what you got out of it, and I'll tell you if you're right.
