~Prologue~

I packed my bags quietly.

The wind flew in from my window and gently caressed my face. Their touch soft and comforting. The light blue, silky curtain swayed in the summer breeze. Up and down. Up and down.

Another piercing scream came from the kitchen.

I covered my ears; Lyra, my dog made her way towards my bed and nuzzled me. I held her close.

"Goodbye, Lyra." I whispered into her soft, golden fur and she licked my hand. A small whine escaped from her throat.

I shivered as a horrendous noise sounded. This time from the living room. And shouts – getting closer and closer.

My bedroom door swung open as my mom came crashing through. Lyra yelped and jumped away.

"Come on." She said sternly, her face tear-stained. She tugged at my arm and I winched as I felt her strength; her anger, unleashing itself on me.

I obediently took my bags from my bed and made my way out of the room. I looked back, and said my goodbyes.

I saw my father standing shell-shocked in the kitchen. His eyes never left me. I felt guilty all of the sudden. His eyes were sad and his fists were clenched.

The divorce paper arrived 2 days ago. The judge made mom my legal guardian and I was told to go and live with her.

She left my dad everything: the money, the house. But I know, deep down, all he wanted was me. And she took that away from him.

I never blamed her. How could I? It wasn't her fault. It was nobody's fault. But if I had to blame it on someone, it'd be God. For taking away my childhood. For taking my dad away from our life.

Mom slammed the door as she left. I followed her quietly down the stairs of our apartment.

I never saw my dad again. There wasn't time.

The following morning, we boarded the earliest flight to L.A. and left everything we knew behind.

That year, I was seven.

Chapter 1 – Chance Meeting

10 years later...

"Just gonna stand there and watch me burn, that's alright because I like the way it hurts…"

I groaned under my warm blanket and muffled a curse. My phone continued to scream in my ear.

"Just gonna stand there and hear me cry, that's alright because I like the way you lie…"

I sat up reluctantly and snatched my phone angrily from the bedside table.

"What?" I nearly shouted to the other side.

A girl chuckled, "Not a morning person, are you?" My best friend, Grace, said between her laughter.

I sighed, "What do you want, Grace? It's only half seven in the – Oh My God it's half eight!" I jumped out of my bed as I glanced at the clock.

More hysterical laughter rang out from her side. "And if you don't get your ass out of the door in 5 we're going to miss the bus!"

I took a pair of washed-out skinny jeans and a plain t-shirt out of the wardrobe and ran to the bathroom. On my way down past the kitchen I grabbed a croissant from the oven and raced out of the door.

We had managed to catch the bust just in time; I got on and saw my friends: Claire, Will and Jake. We walked over to say hi.

"Did you hear?" Claire chatted animatedly as she made room for me and Grace. "There's a new senior transfer student at our college. And from what my sources tells me, he is a total hottie!" She shrieked in excitement.

I raised my eyebrow at her. "I thought you already have a boyfriend. *Cough* Will *Cough*." I looked at Will sympathetically.

Claire shrugged and patted Will on the shoulder. "Don't look so glum! I was just kidding! You know you're the only one for me." She kissed him on the cheek.

I rolled my eyes, "Get a room!"

"Just because you don't have a boyfriend!" Claire teased.

"So what? Besides, it's much better to have guys as friends than boyfriends."

Grace sighed beside me. "Since when are you going to stop being such a tomboy? You'll never get a boyfriend if you keep up you 'manly' alter-ego."

I nudged her with my elbow playfully as we continued to tease each other for the rest of the journey.

I grabbed a burger from the canteen and a bottle of orange juice as I searched for my friends. I didn't feel very well, probably because of the rat we just dissected in biology.

"Ouch!" I cried as I bumped into someone. I looked up and saw a handsome looking boy about a year or so older than me. He had rich, chocolate coloured hair and deep blue eyes like the ocean.

I blushed.

"Sorry." I apologised quickly and he smiled.

"Don't worry about it." He bent down and picked up my lunch. "It was my fault."

I muttered a thank you quietly.

He smiled again and I realised just how sexy he looked when he smiled. I slapped myself mentally at the thought. What are you thinking? I screamed in my head. You only just met him!

I thanked him again and speed walked towards my friends' table, daring not to look back.

"Is that the transfer senior?" Grace whispered, "OMG, he IS gorgeous."

I sat down next to her; my cheeks still burning up. And when I finally gathered my courage to look around the canteen, he was nowhere to be found.
