I've always wanted to write a religious song, but I could never get a good idea up until now. I believe in God every step of the way. But I've never been to sure what He wants of me, or what I want, or if it's the same thing. And the line from Jesus Christ Superstar popped into my head, from THE best song in the whole play: "God, Thy will is hard / But You hold every card." And I decided to end the song like that, but using Jesus' actual words: Not My will, but Your will be done.

Not My Will

I've always known You love me

I've always known You're there

But I am losing sight of You

And questions fill the air

I believe in You

But tell me just one thing

If I believe in You

Do You believe in me?

This whole world is in Your hands

And I must seem so very small

I'm a single grain of sand

With no importance at all

When You're tending to Your fields

How could You ever see

The blade of grass beneath the roses?

Are You listening to me?

I've been begging for a reason

A sign that I can be someone

Please give me an answer

Tell me what can be done

Why is it my dream

To save the world somehow?

Do You have other plans for me?

Why can't I know this now?

This whole world is in Your hands

And I must seem so very small

I'm a single grain of sand

With no importance at all

When You're tending to Your fields

How could You ever see

The blade of grass beneath the roses?

Are You listening to me?

I pray for answers

A chance to feel You

I'm in Your hands forever

And that's how long I'll wait

But when it's time for me to know

Please don't hesitate

Not my will

But Your will be done
