The rest of the day passed in a blur. The corridors of Rosswell Highschool slowly began to empty. At the end of the day, I found myself sitting alone in detention with Mr. Lumpus.
I kept my eyes on my book; making no sound, no one to make noise with. It was like being a mute person by choice.
I suddenly heard the door open then close again at the same time. Three things happened all at once.
"Well what are you standing at the door for, Ms. Dresden? Come in" Just as he said that, I looked up to see Maggie walking in.
She's here. She's actually here. Wait---She's here? In detention?
I could hear the heels of her shoes clatter as she went over to the chair at the back. I wanted to look at her, maybe catch her gaze but I knew she chose that space for a reason. She's avoiding me.
"Ms. Dresden, what are you doing there so far back? Sit over with Mr. Lancaster here" Sir Lumpus called out to Maggie, tapping the seat next to me.
"No sir. I'm fine here" Maggie answered.
I fell silent. More silent than I already was. I was disappointed. I looked down.
"Now Ms. Dresden" Sir Lumpus said.
I heard her stand up. Her footsteps echoed beside me. She sat on the chair and laid down her bag next to her. Both of us were still, no one moved, no one talked. Not even Sir Lumpus. Maggie and I were both focused on our reading. Well, at least trying to be. There was still tension, it seemed like there was a wall between us that no one, not even me, was trying to break.
But I knew I had to.
