Chapter 4

Kendall's POV

Carson drove us to school the next morning. I yawned the whole way there. Carson snores like a buzz saw, so I didn't get much sleep. My whole body was stiff and sore from what happened with my dad yesterday. I wanted to go home, I wanted to check on my mom, but I just couldn't deal with my dad. I just hoped mom was okay. Without me there to knock around, god only knows what dad could have done to her last night.

"Dude, you okay?" Carson asked as he pulled into the school parking lot. "You seem kinda quiet." I sighed, nodding.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Just tired, because you're insane snoring kept waking me up." I said with a pointed look. He chuckled.

"Sorry, dude. Can't help it. Runs in the family." he said, turning the car off and slamming the door. I grabbed my guitar and we headed up the front steps to the school.

I shoved my guitar into my locker and waited from Carson to grab his books from his locker. He slammed his locker door shut, and we were about to head down the hall when his girlfriend, Olivia, made her way towards us. She was all smiles, as usual.

Olivia was a total sweetheart. She was gorgeous, with her big blue eyes and long, shiny blonde hair. When she started dating Carson, people were kind of confused, because they seemed like kind of a weird match. But they balanced each other out well, and they were cute together. She made him really happy, anybody could see that when they looked at him,. I hoped that one day I would find a girl that was a good match for me.

"Hey babe." she said, giving him a light kiss on the lips. She grinned at me. "Hey Kendall! I haven't seen you in forever." she said, giving me a hug.

I smiled. I couldn't help it, Olivia was so warm and bubbly all the time that it was impossible not to smile when she was around. "I know, it's been a while." I said.

"Sorry I had to cancel last night, Carson. But I'm free tonight, if you want to do something." she said, looking up at him with a hopeful smile.

"Well, uh, Kendall and I were going to hang out..." he said, trailing off.

"Dude, it's fine. We can hang out some other time." I said with a shrug. Carson looked at me wearily.

"You sure?" he asked. I nodded. "Okay then, how about we get coffee after school?"

"Sounds great." she said. Carson laced his hand with her's and they walked off down the hall. I sighed, watching them leave. I was happy for Carson, but he spent so much time with Olivia. It's like everywhere I looked, people were happily in love.

I heard a loud laugh behind me. I turned to look, rolling my eyes. Cue Abigail and Ashton walking towards me. He had his arm draped over her shoulder, laughing about something. He stared icily at me as they passed. But something seemed off. I looked at Abigail. She didn't look as happy as she usually did. She looked...reserved, awkward. She was hugging her arms to her chest, as if to hold herself together. She didn't looked as comfortable with Ashton as she usually did. Maybe they had a fight or something and she was angry with him.

But then again, why should I care?

But it was then that I saw it. The little bluish-purple tint on her cheek. My eyes widened. That mark on her cheek was unmistakably a bruise. My eyes narrowed as I looked from Abigail to Ashton. I knew he was the one to give her that bruise. I could tell from the way he was smugly looking at me. He knew I had noticed it. Anger bubbled inside of me. It was one thing for my father to do that to me, but for someone to do that to a girl? A girl who did no one any harm? It just wasn't right.

The bell rang, and I sighed, grabbing my guitar from my locker and heading to music class. Mr. Benson was writing something on the whiteboard when I got there. I went to go sit next to Carson, and I made a face when I noticed he was busy making out with Olivia.

"Really dude? In the middle of music class?" I asked, slapping him on the shoulder. He smiled sheepishly at me.

"Class hasn't started yet, has it?" he asked matter of factly. I rolled my eyes.

Abigail entered the room, she looked miserable. She sat down in front of me. I sighed sadly, looking at her. Her shoulders trembled slightly, and I clenched my hands into fists. I hated Ashton more then I had ever hated anything in my life. The nerve of that guy, doing something like this to her.

"Alright guys, how are you're duets coming along?" Mr. Benson asked, turning to face the class. He got a bunched of mumbled anwsers. He smiled. I nudged Abigail in the back. She turned around to face me, her facial expression unreadable.

"Hey, are we still staying after school to practice our song?" I asked her. She nodded.

"Yeah, but I can't stay long. I have plans with Ashton." she said the last part quietly, not meeting my eyes. I gave her a small smile as she turned around.

"Okay guys, I got a new song for us to try. Grab you're instruments, and I've chosen Olivia and Abigail to sing the solo." Mr. Benson said, handing out sheet music. I took the guitar part, and smiled when I read the title. It was Shelter by Hedley. I was super excited about this one, I was a huge Hedley fan. I turned to Carson, who was tuning his bass.

"Dude, we're doing Hedley!" I said. He chuckled.

"Only you would be eager about that." he said, shaking his head. I scoffed.

"Oh, come on dude, you know they're a good band!" I said. Carson shrugged.

"You go ahead and thing that if you want to." he said.

"Alright guys, everyone get ready." Mr. Benson said, going over to the piano. "1, 2, 3, go"

Olivia

See I could spend forever here and never wanna stop
Cause baby you are making my day
Don't tell me what it takes my dear to keep you in one spot
I'm crazy good at finding a way

Abigail

For all of my days I'll be brave I'll be stronger
And always keep a hand on my pride
Cause if I build it with care it will last that much longer
I'll always give you somewhere to hide

Both

I'll give you shelter, out of the rain
I'll make a good day, out of the pain
And if you got a long way down, I'll feel the same
I'll give you shelter, out of the rain

I smiled as I found myself mouthing the words along with them. Abigail looked over at me a couple times during the song, and I gave her an encouraging smile. She quickly averted her eyes. I sighed to myself. I could feel Carson's eyes on me, but I didn't care. I was concerned about her. I knew we weren't exactly close friends, or anything, but I knew she was hurting. I had experienced was she was going through right now, and I didn't want anyone else to have to go through that. I knew I needed to talk to her, t help anyway I could.

The bell signalling lunch rang, and before I could even approach her, Abigail rushed out the door as fast ash she possibly could.

...........................................................................................................................................................I wasn't able to track Abigail down the rest of the day, that is, until our practice after school. I made my way into the music room, and saw that she was already there. She was seated on the risers, scribbling in a notebook, humming softly to herself. She looked up and offered a small smile when she saw me.

"Hey" she said quietly, putting her notebook in her bag and taking her sheet music out. She sat down at the piano as I took my guitar out of it's case.

"Hey." I said, strumming a few cords.

"So, I was thinking we'd try to polish up the harmonies a little today. I mean, our voices seem to blend well together, it sounds good, but we need to make sure we-" she started, but I had to cut her off.

"Abigail, look. Before we go over the song, I need to ask you something." I said, looking over at her. Her smile fell, and she looked down at her feet. Her shoulders fell, and I knew she could tell what I was about to ask.

"Sure, go ahead." she said quietly, looking back up at me. Her eyes, usually so bright and full of life, were filled with tears. I could feel an uneasiness building in my stomach. This was so wrong. She shouldn't have to feel this way, she shouldn't be going through this.

"Abby...." I whispered, walking over to stand next to her. I sat down beside her on the piano stool. I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck before continuing. "Abby, does Ashton...hurt you?" I asked. It felt so wrong to be asking her this, but I needed to know. I needed to make sure my suspicisons were right. I almost hoped they weren't.

She looked at me nervously. "W-what are you talking about?" she asked. I gingerly reached my hand up, touching her cheek. She winced, flinching away.

"Don't tell me that bruise just appeared there spontaneously." I said. She would not look me in the eyes, so I turned her head with my finger. "I've been abused before, Abigail. I know what it's like. You can tell me, I can help you through it." I said.

"Y-you've been abused?" she asked, her expression changed to shock. I nodded.

"Yeah, by my dad. But that's not what I'm asking. Does Ashton abuse you?" I asked, gently taking her hand.

She sighed, looking down. Her shoulders began shaking, and I could tell she was sobbing. I gently rubbed her back, trying to offer any kind of comfort I could.

"I have no idea what I did to make him so angry. He was never like that. Sure, he's gotten upset with me before, but never anything like this. He has never actually hit me before. But yesterday, I don't know what happened. He just...snapped, and slammed me up against the brick wall and started hitting me. And I have no idea why!" she said, crying into my shoulder.

"Abby, it's not you're fault." I said. "The guy's a jerk. He's not good. And you deserve so much better, you're an amazing, sweet girl, and you can do so much better then Ashton Hoggart." I said.

She wiped her eyes, nodding. "I know. But he loves me, and if I break up with him, who knows what he'll do?" she said.

"But if you stay with him, you could get seriously hurt!" I said. She nodded.

"I know. I have to really think about what to do about this." she said. I gave her a small smile.

"Well, whatever you decide to do, I'm here for you when you need me." I told her. She smiled gratefully.

"You know he told me he doesn't want me to see you anymore after this project?" she asked. I chuckled, rolling my eyes at Ashton's stupidity. "But I'm not going to listen. Because you're a cool guy."

I smiled. "I know." I said with a shrug. She giggled, punching me lightly in the shoulder.

"So, I guess we should probably get to work on this duet?" she asked. I nodded, standing up and strumming a few cords before launching into the song.

After practising with Abigail, I found Carson, who had stayed after school to finish up a biology project, since he was my ride home.

"So, how was singing with what's her face?" Carson asked with a smirk. I chuckled.

"It was okay. She's a sweet girl, and she can sing really well." I said. He nodded. I loaded my guitar into Carson's car, but before he could start the ignition, something caught my eye that I did not like. My eyes widened as I saw Abigail pushed up against a brick wall by Ashton. He was punching her and kicking her, slamming her head against the wall again and again. I looked over at Carson, who was watching, his eyes wide. I ran over, Carson right behind me.

"Hey, Ashton, get the fuck away from her!" I screamed.

Ashton turned around, removing his hands from around Abigail's neck. She doubled over, gasping for breath. His eyes narrowed when he saw me.

"What do you want, Ken-dork?" he growled.

"I want you to stop hurting her! Do you realise what you're doing? You're hurting the girl you're supposed to be in love with!" I said. He pushing Abby out of the way, and she tumbled to the ground. Carson knelt down to check that Abby was okay.

"You're just here to protect her because you want her. Don't try to deny it, I see the way you look at her. You want my girl." he snarled. I rolled my eyes.

"No, Ashton. I just don't want to see a lady get hurt." I said.

Ashton hauled off and punched me in the face. My neck snapped back, and I heard Abby scream. I punched Ashton in the stomach, then kicked him in the crotch. He cried out in pain. He slammed me into the wall, punching me in the face again. I pushed him off of me, and he stumbled backward, but not falling to the ground. He pushed me down, kicking me in the side. Carson stood up, trying to pull Ashton away, but Ashton kicked him in the stomach.

"Ashton, stop! Please!" Abigail screamed.

"Shut up, bitch!" Ashton snapped.

"Hey, don't talk to her that way." I said, struggling to stand.

"Hey, guys, break it up!" a voice called out. Mr. Benson ran over to us. "Ashton, my office, right now!" he commanded. Carson helped him lead Ashton away, and Mr. Benson knelt down beside Abby and me. "You kids okay?"

I nodded. "Give me a minute, I will be." I said. Abigail nodded in agreement.

"Okay, well, when you guys are ready, I need you to come inside, so we can get the full story." he said. Abby nodded.

Mr. Benson fallowed Carson and Ashton inside, and Abigail crawled over to me. "Are you sure you're okay?" she whispered. I nodded, wincing as she touched my cheek, where a bruise was forming.

"Yeah, I'll be okay. I'm used to it." I said. She sighed, shaking her head.

"Don't make jokes. You didn't have to do that for me, Kendall. You get enough of this at home, you didn't have to get him to stop." she said.

"Yah, I did. I couldn't just stand by and watch you get hurt, Abby. No one deserves that. Especially not someone like you. You're better then that. Better then him." I said.

"Well, I certainly appreciated it. Thank you, Kendall." she whispered.

She leaned over, lightly kissing my lips. It was a sweet, quick kiss. Her lips fit perfectly with mine, and I smiled into the kiss. She pulled away, nervously smiling. "Sorry." she said quickly.

"Don't be. If I get rewards like that, I'm going to start helping people more often." I said with a sly smile. She giggled, shaking her head.

"Come one, we need to go inside. Hopefully Mr. Benson expels Ashton." Abigail said with disdain. She helped me stand up, and I winced as I tried walking. She put her arm around my waist, letting me lean on her. I smiled gratefully.

"You helped me, I might as well return the favour. You be good to me, I'll be good to you." she said.

I rolled my eyes, smiling. "That was insanely cheesy." I said.

"I know." she said with a smile.
