Chapter 29- What. The. Hell

My eyes fluttered open; that's when I realized that I was, indeed, at the hospital. The previous events had not been dreams, but reality. I sighed; at least I was feeling much better. A bit sore on my side still, but I could move and breathe without feeling that strong stab of pain. A robust nurse with warm eyes and a sweet smile came into the room with what I assumed was my chart.

"Hi sweetie, how are you feeling?" She asked

"Much better." I smiled

"That's great! You've recovered exceptionally well! That's why you can go home today. In the closet over in the corner are some clean clothes for you to change into." She said and made her way to the door.

"Wait!" I said and she stopped to look at me. "Who brought the clean clothes?" I asked

"Oh, it was your boyfriend, such a sweet kid he is." She said with a wink

I mumbled thanks to her with a reddened face as I watched her leave the room. I got up and indeed, some of my clothes were in the closet. I grabbed the jeans and the t-shirt and quickly changed into them. Eager to get out of the hospital and go back home and pretend like this never happened. I can't imagine how mad and disappointed the Klein's would be if they knew about this incident. I shuddered at the thought. It should be fine though, Caleb did promise to keep quiet about it.

"May I come in?" I herd from outside my room. It must be the doctor.

"Sure, come in." I replied.

A tall man that seemed to be in his mid forties came in, wearing a while lab coat. Yeah, he has to be the doctor.

"I'm glad to see that you have recovered so well." He said as he took a seat on the couch in the room.

"Yeah I feel better, just a bit sore." I answered

"Yeah that's understandable. That's why I just came in to give you a prescription for some pain killers. That way you can start taking them ASAP and feel even better." He said with a smile. I realized how handsome he was. He had soft blue eyes, tan skin, light brown hair that was already graying on the sides; that added character to his appearance.

"Thank you doctor." I said

"Well, I'll let you go now. Have a good day."

"Thank you, you too doctor."

Once he was out of the room, Caleb came in soon after.

"Ready to go?" He asked

"Yeah." I answered

He grabbed the bag with my dirty clothes and held the door open for me. I looked around and I didn't see Liam.

"Where's Liam?" I asked

I saw Caleb's expression go from soft to hard in a second.

"He left." He said matter-of-factly

"Oh." I said, trying not to sound so disappointed. But I'm sure he and Irving saw right through it.

"Come on, let's go." He said softly and led the way out to the parking lot. Irving walking next to me, placing his hand softly, but firmly, on my lower back, giving me support.

The drive home was silent, but pleasant. I glanced over at the rear-view mirror and noticed that Caleb was looking at me. I quickly glanced out the window, trying to hide my blushing face. A couple of minutes passed by and he was looking at me again. Geez! This guy is going to get us killed if he doesn't keep him damn eyes on the road. Suddenly the car came to a halt. I noticed that we were parked in front of a pharmacy.

"Melody, can you please give me your prescription." Caleb said.

I nodded and gave it to him. He hands the note over to Irving and he leaves for the pharmacy. That left me and Caleb alone… in his car… alone… great. I can't help but feel a bit nervous. I don't know why I was feeling nervous, and that only made me feel uncomfortable.

"Are you hungry?" Caleb asked; making me jump slightly from the sudden noise.

I'm a bit startled by his question. But the rumbling in my stomach indicates me that I am indeed hungry. "Yeah, I am hungry." I answered.

He nods at me and looks out the window, not uttering another word. Okay… that's weird. He just asks me if I'm hungry and that's it? He doesn't even ask me if I want to go somewhere to eat? Or is his intention to purposely starve me?

Before my thoughts could get carried away, Irving opened the passenger door and sat down. "Here's your meds Mel." He said and gave me the medicine.

"Thank you Irving." I replied softly. From then on, we drive back home in silence again. Gosh, these two usually can't stay quiet. How come they're being so silent now?

We finally arrive to the Klein's residence and Caleb parks his car. I struggle to get out and I gasp in surprise as I feel a strong pair of arms life me from up. Caleb picks me up bridal-style and heads to the house. All I managed to do was give him a puzzled look.

He saw my expression and chuckled slightly. "I'm just helping you in the house Mel. That way you won't hurt as much."

"Thanks." I said dumbfounded. I wasn't used to him being so nice and courteous with me. It was nice, a bit weird, but nice nonetheless.

Inside, he carefully sits me down on the couch; his gentleness gave me butterflies. Wait, no! I cannot allow myself to get butterflies because of him! Stop butterflies! I say to myself in my mind. Stop fluttering, now! I demand that you stop!

"Melody!" I jumped from Caleb's sudden outburst.

"Huh?" I say confused

"You didn't hear me? I asked you what you wanted to eat."

"Oh, sorry. I didn't hear you. Umm, I want a grilled cheese sandwich."

He smiles at me and hands me the remote before he and Irving left for the kitchen. I can't believe he is being so nice to me. I can surely get used to this side of Caleb; it reminds me of how he was before he became Mr. Super Hottie Popular Heartthrob. He was the Caleb I used to know, the guy that was my best friend once upon a time. I bite my lip hard. I can't let myself get my hopes up; I'm sure that things will go back to how they were pretty soon. To distract myself, I turn on the TV and watch some dumb reality show on MTV. Soon after, Caleb and Irving come into the living room carrying trays with food. I can see that the foods they are carrying in are the grilled cheese sandwiches, some apple juice and cubed watermelon… that's my favorite! I can't believe he remembered my favorite meal. It's all I demanded to eat throughout my whole childhood. I look at him with curious eyes and thank him for the food. They put the trays down and sit on the couch with me. We start eating in silence while we watch some TV.

"Alright guys. I'm done with my food. Thank you and I'll see you guys later." He says as he stands up and picks up his plate. He goes into the kitchen, puts the plate in the dishwasher and heads back out to the living room.

"Why are you leaving already?" Caleb asked him.

"Cause, I'm going to go meet Ruby. My lady needs me. But I'll see you guys later. Bye!" He calls out as he heads out the door.

I clear my throat uncomfortably.

"Well, thank you very much for the food. It was very good." I say sincerely.

"You're welcome." He paused and he looked like he wanted to say something else but was hesitant. He took a deep breath before speaking again. "Melody, I need to talk to you about something." He said in a serious tone. I become nervous but nod to encourage him to continue. It can't be that bad… right?

Again, he takes a deep breath and finally looks at me straight in the eye. "I want to apologize for my behavior since you moved in. I'm going to sound like a freaking asshole for it, but I want you to know how truly sorry I am. The reason why I acted the way I did is because of Blake. She threatened to tell my parents some pretty bad things about me that would get me in trouble if they ever found out. She said that if I wasn't mean to you she was going to tell my parents what I had done. I panicked so I agreed to it. But trust me that I didn't do it because I purposely wanted to be a fucking asshole to you. But I eventually realized what a coward I was for letting her get to me like this; especially because I was hurting you. And I couldn't live with myself anymore. I couldn't forgive myself. So I finally told Blake that I could care less if she told my parents but I wasn't going to be mean to you anymore. So when I was going to finally apologize to you, I realized you were gone. I panicked at first, but then I felt like a complete prick, because I knew you left because of me. I don't expect you to forgive me, but I just needed to let you know. To apologize." He finally finished. I had been so intent on what he was saying that I didn't realize that I was crying. It wasn't until a tear dropped on my hand that I realized I was crying.

"Please don't cry." Caleb whispered, wiping a stray tear from my cheek with his thumb. My first instinct was to smack his hand away, and that is exactly what I did. I felt very angry. Angry because he had put me through hell all because he was afraid of the threats of a stupid girl. Angry because he made me feel like shit. I was ready to yell at him and speak my mind until I looked at his face. I could really see the hurt and regret in his eyes. That made all the anger evaporate almost instantly. I take a deep breath before speaking.

"I understand that you were in a tough situation. But you shouldn't have treated me the way you did. Do you have any idea how that made me feel?" I said looking at Caleb's face. He shook his head and looked down. "But, I can see that you are genuinely sorry. That's why I forgive you."

Caleb's head snapped up and he looked at me with excited eyes.

"You do?"

"Yes, I do."

"Than you so much Melody!" He said gleefully as he embraced me in a tight hug. It hurt a bit because of the pain on my side, but I didn't mind.

"Well," He started as he got up from the couch. "It's been a rough couple of days. I'm going to take a nap. I didn't get much sleep." He said playfully.

"Okay." I said. I could use some rest myself. I lay on my back trying to get comfortable.

Caleb stopped and turned around before leaving all the way to the staircase.

"By the way," He said, "I broke up with Blake."

And with that he left up to his room.

I didn't know what to say or think. I just couldn't wipe away the stupid grin off my face as I tried to take a nap.

What. The. Hell.
