Scene Three

"A New Beginning Point"

JOSH
(JOSH moves over to the train tracks and sits on them)
Dear Megan... no, I... I can't do this anymore. It just... it just hurts too much. This can't keep happening...
(spotlight on the train station bench, empty)

(after a couple of seconds, SANDRA comes running in)

SANDRA
Ha! I beat him today. I can't wait to see the look on his face when he gets here...

(SANDRA sits down on the bench and waits)

(soon after sitting, SANDRA notices JOSH on the train tracks)
Hey, someone's on the tracks.

(SANDRA stands up and strains her eyes)
And it looks like it's... Josh?

(SANDRA runs up to the end of the station)

(spotlight follows here and illuminates JOSH, who's sitting upright on the tracks, visibly distressed and disheartened)
Josh! What are you doing on the tracks?

JOSH
I'm waiting for a train, Sandra. Same as always.

SANDRA
You can do that up on the benches, same as always! Don't sit on the tracks!

JOSH
I don't think you really understand what I mean. I'm waiting for a train... to take me away.

SANDRA
What are you talking about? Of all the times to make sense, this would be a good one!

JOSH
I'm... I'm giving up. On this charade, on this dream, on everything. There's no point anymore.

SANDRA
What? You're not seriously thinking of... Why? What about Megan? What about your future? What's the point in holding on this long just to throw it away now?

JOSH
There's nothing left with Megan! She's... gone. She's been gone ever since her last letter got to me.

SANDRA
Just because she doesn't show up for a couple months doesn't mean-

JOSH
(interrupting) You don't know what it's like to sit here every week and hope that she'll show up, only to go home alone each and every Saturday!

SANDRA
You've held on this long, Josh! Why, of all weeks, would you give up now?

JOSH
Because this week I realized that I'm not chasing after a girl who can come back. Not anymore.

SANDRA
But... you said... (realization) Oh.

JOSH
For a while, I had hoped that it wasn't true. So I kept coming to the train station, hoping each day that she would walk out of those doors and greet me again.
(pause)
After a while, I gave in and accepted that she was gone. But I kept coming hoping for the chance to see her one more time, even in a vision, or something. I held on to the hope that she'd come down and give me some kind of departing message, to wrap this whole thing up.

(JOSH slams his fist on the ground)
But not a single sign of any kind came my way. I couldn't even be spared so much as a "So long, Josh"... I've had it. There's nothing left... She's just a dream that never came true...

SANDRA
Josh, please, let's talk about this somewhere else. They're running maintenance checks today; the trains could come through here any minute.

JOSH
Fine. Let them. The sooner they come, the sooner I'll be reunited with her.

SANDRA
You have more to live for, man! Don't give up just because of this.

JOSH
(JOSH's voice starts to crack) I loved her, Sandra! I... I've never loved anyone before. I thought it was perfect... we balanced each other out... she was the world to me... everything I did after college, I did to help her... there's nothing left for me if there's no Megan...

SANDRA
Please Josh, please just get up. What are your friends and family gonna think about this? And what about her parents? They're grieving too, and I'm sure they don't want you leaving any time soon.

JOSH
I know... But what am I suppose to do now? I have nothing left to hold on to...

SANDRA
There's plenty to hold on to, Josh, you just have to find something that helps you cope.

JOSH
Megan was always the one who was by my side, always comforting me if something went wrong... I'm so used to bottling up my emotions, so that something like this never happens. But the bottle's broken now, and I'm paying for it. Everything's spilling out now, and I can't control it.

SANDRA
Are you trying to tell me that no one else has ever felt the way that you did? That you're the only person who's ever dealt with loss? Did the story of Paul from yesterday just slip by you?

JOSH
It's not the same! He's not dead! He didn't stick by you for eight years!

SANDRA
But it's all the same emotions! It's still love, it's still pain, it's still heartbreak, damn it! Sure, the death makes this much more extreme than my case, but they're all the same feelings. It's all the same...

(JOSH stares at SANDRA)

(everything is silent for a moment)

JOSH
I feel so... broken without her. I'm such a useless wreck...

SANDRA
Josh, listen to me. You said something to me yesterday that helped me out a lot. I'm gonna tell you the exact same thing.

(SANDRA jumps down to the tracks, grabs JOSH's shoulders and looks at him eye-to-eye)
It's time to move on, Josh. In the talks we've had, I can tell you're a good person and that you are meant to accomplish so much. But you need to get over Megan now.

JOSH
I... I... I guess...

(SANRA picks JOSH up, and BOTH get up onto the station and sit back on the bench. SANDRA's arm is around JOSH's shoulders.)
...Gosh, it makes so much sense hearing it from someone else.

SANDRA
A person's voice never sounds the same to themselves. Now come on, Josh. It's time to step away from the tracks and into a new chapter of your life. I'm sure Megan would've wanted you to stay here and do good work.

JOSH
(sniff) Y'know Sandra, there's a lot more in common with you two than I first imagined.

SANDRA
(chuckle) Do tell.

JOSH
You both don't know when to give up on me. You keep fighting until you get your way. (sniff) That and you like to turn the things I say against me.

SANDRA
It's alright, tough guy. Let it all out. Tell me all about our history with Megan. Everything that you want to say about her.

JOSH
Alright. But should we do this now, or...?

SANDRA
Well, I've still gotta set up the station and everything. You wanna get together sometime this Wednesday? Maybe go the park?

JOSH
That'd be... nice. Thanks.

SANDRA
It's no problem. Honest. But now I have to get ready for the opening. You have a safe trip home, and don't go stepping into traffic or anything or I'll make sure you get to Megan in pieces.

JOSH
(chuckle) Sure thing, Sandra. Sure thing. Have a good day at work today.

SANDRA
Thanks. I'll see you around then.

JOSH
Yeah... see you.

(JOSH and SANDRA start to leave the stage in separate directions)

(JOSH stops and turns around)
(serious) Wait! Before you go...

(SANDRA stops and turns around)

SANDRA
Yes?

JOSH
Do you think Megan minded? You know, about that thing last week...

SANDRA
Where did that come from? (chuckles) And why ask that?

JOSH
(smiles) It was getting way too serious around here. Had to ease the tension somehow...

SANDRA
(SANDRA shakes her head and turns around)
Bye, Josh.

JOSH
Bye, Sandra.

(JOSH and SANDRA leave the stage in separate directions)

(spotlight turns off)

(During JOSH's last monologue, he goes offstage and grabs a headstone and places it on the empty side of the stage. He then grabs a large stack of letters and sits in front of the headstone)
Dear Megan, I hope you'll understand. I waited a long time to see you once again, but I guess I'm not finished here. I'll see you again, but it will be some time much later. Until then, I'll keep searching for something new in life, and having brand new experiences.
(Spotlight on JOSH)

(JOSH places the stack of letters in front of the headstone.)
I'm gonna leave these here for you, y'know, in case you wanna look through them or anything. I think I'll keep writing letters to you, letting you know what I've been up to. Even if you're gone, it wouldn't feel right to just leave you behind. I'll come back every couple weeks or so with new stories about my life. And don't worry, Sandra will take good care of me. I'm sure of it. Forever with you, Josh.

(JOSH exits the stage.)
