COMIC BOOK
SHMUEL BREBAN (JEWMANBERG)

Teaser copy: Having supposedly disappeared over 2,800 years ago, a group claiming to be the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel resurfaces in the Middle East with seemingly inexplicable powers, and, oh yeah... they want their land back.

PAGE 1, 2 PANELS:

Panel 1: WALT REGAL (Larry King-esque host) moderates a televised discussion between SUIT #1 (male) and SUIT #2 (female). There is a logo on the bottom right that reads, "Week with Walt Regal". Walt is touching his earpiece. Suit #1 and Suit #2 are each raising a finger, as if attempting to interject a point.

Caption (top left): New York, Sat. evening.

WALT REGAL

Now, hold on a second. The both of you need to stop interrupting each-

WALT REGAL (CONT'D)

I apologize for the interruption, but we have late-breaking news out of the Middle East...

SUIT #1

We support Israel!

SUIT #2

We support Israel even more!

Panel 2: Just Walt.

WALT REGAL

I don't know if I'm hearing this correctly, but... yes, yes we have amateur footage that will be available to us momentarily.

WALT REGAL (CONT'D)

Apparently, a group of, for lack of a batter word, unusually attired, powerful men, women, and children have mysteriously appeared in northeastern Syria, near the Turkish border.

WALT REGAL

There are reports that the group ignored repeated Syrian orders and continued traveling south, prompting the Syrian Arab Army to...

PAGE 2-3, SPLASH:

This is an extremely busy splash, as the SYRIAN ARAB ARMY clashes with the TEN LOST TRIBES, during the middle of the night, in Syria. The tribes, each with their own distinct mode of archaic dress (and each man, except for Tribe Reuven, wears a head-covering), total 248 members (please see Guide for the specifics). The Syrians are firing at the tribes, and some of the tribes' abilities, which are tribe-specific, are revealed on this splash, as follows:

The tribes of Shimon (large gladiators, wielding advanced heavy weaponry, see Guide) and Gad man the front lines. Bullets bounce off of Tribe Gad. One of the warriors of Shimon, named SHIMSHON, appears as if he's 13 yo and fights near his father MALACHI, who appears as if 40 yo (see Guide).

Caption 1. Al-Hasakah, Syria, late Sat. night.

Caption 2 (near Tribe Shimon): The tribe of Shimon: warriors, temperamental.

Caption 3(near Tribe Gad): The tribe of Gad: Survivors, near-invulnerable.

The tribe of Asher, situated on the right flank, use the soil (and any vegetation) as weapons against the Syrians.

Caption 4 (near Tribe Asher): The tribe of Asher: Their bread has richness - able to control soil and vegetation.

The tribe of Naphtali, positioned on the left flank, recite unintelligible spells and hypnotize some of the soldiers.

Caption 5 (near tribe Naphtali): The tribe of Naphtali: Their sayings are beautiful - incantations, spells, hypnotism.

(Note: Most of the other tribes, as well as almost all of the women and children remain in the background and are visible, but not prominent, on the splash.)

Caption 5 (bottom-right, Walt Regal): "The Syrian Army reportedly suffered major casualties in a short span of time to the group of travelers, many of whom, allegedly, exhibited inexplicable abilities."

PAGE 4, 2 PANELS:

Panel 1: A female REPORTER (24 yo Arab, non-threatening, dressed sharply but not holding a microphone) attempts to interview the leader of Tribe Yisachar, named SHLOMO (80 yo in appearance). It is clear from Reporter's facial expressions and hair that she is moving at a brisk pace just to keep in stride with Shlomo and the tribes, who continue their sojourn. Shlomo is toward the middle of the pack. To Shlomo's left stands his son SHAUL (35 yo in appearance). To Shlomo's right stands ELI (27 y.o. in appearance) of Tribe Zevulun. Reporter is to our right of Shaul. Many members of TRIBE ZEVULUN and TRIBE YISACHAR are in the area (with Yisachar mainly toward our right (Shlomo's left), and Zevulun to our left). There is fraternal mingling between the two tribes. More media have gathered in the background but mostly maintain a safe distance.

Caption 1 (Walt Regal, top left): "An intrepid, young Israeli field reporter of one of our sister stations managed to get a short interview with one of the travelers in the Al-Hasakah region of Syria, and as soon as we have the subtitles up..."

Caption 2 (near Tribe Yisachar): Tribe Yisachar: Scholars and wise men, possess an additional ability of which no one speaks.

Caption 3 (near Tribe Zevulun): Tribe Zevulun: Fiscal experts, friends of Tribe Yisachar.

Caption 4 (near Shlomo): Shlomo of Tribe Yisachar: Chief Rabbi and leader of the Tribes.

REPORTER

Excuse me, sir! You seem to be the leader around here. Can you-*

Caption 5: * Translated from Arabic.

Panel 2:

Eli has stepped in front of Shlomo and Shaul, toward Reporter, which has forced Reporter to back away just a tad. Eli is chastising Reporter.

ELI

You do not address my father-in-law! Ask of me what you must know.*

REPORTER

I'm not sure that I understand what you- Well, who are you guys, and what are you doing?

Caption 1: *Translated from the biblical Hebrew.

PAGE 5, 3 PANELS:

Panel 1. Reporter and VIDEOGRAPHER (filming interview) keep stride with Eli, as the interview progresses.

ELI

We are the ten exiled tribes of Israel, which is our destination.

REPORTER

You are walking to Israel?

ELI

Yes.

REPORTER

Why?

Panel 2. Just Eli.

ELI

Because, young lady, we-

Panel 3.

PRIME MINISTER MOSHE GOREN (42 yo, see Guide), flanked by two MOSSAD AGENTS, races down a corridor (depicted in mid-stride).

Caption 1 (middle-right): An undisclosed location in Jerusalem.

Caption 2: The man in the middle has just called for an emergency meeting of the Forum of Seven, the seven most senior ministers of the Israeli cabinet.

Caption 3: (bottom right): Let's meet the players:

PAGES 6-7, SPLASH:

The splash has six panels, each one features a member of the Forum in mid-stride (reminiscent of a 70's action pose). See Guide for detailed physical descriptions of the ministers.

Panel 1. BENNY ISAACHAROFF (33 yo) is mid-stride.

Caption 1: MK Benny Isaacharoff, Minister of Strategic Affairs: Security coordinator, represents the right wing, "liberal conservatism" LIKUD Party.

Caption 2: Publicly denounced as "inept" by his father.

Panel 2: URI SHAPIRA (40 yo) is mid-stride.

Caption 1: MK Uri Shapira, Minister of Intelligence and Atomic Energy: Political head of the Israeli intelligence community, also represents the LIKUD Party.

Caption 2: Does not know a single thing about atomic energy.

Panel 3: ELIYAHU BEN-YOSEF (45 yo, sports yamulka and long beard) is mid-stride.

Caption 1: MK Eliyahu Ben-Yosef, Minister of Internal Affairs: Primarily controls religious issues, represents the ultra-orthodox, conservative SHAS Party.

Caption 2: He's more religious than you.

Panel 4: HAIM LEVY (62 yo) sweats profusely as he jogs.

Caption 1: MK Haim Levy, Minister without Portfolio: Although not a head of any particular industry, largely considered the most intelligent member of the Knesset, represents the LIKUD Party.

Caption 2: His patriotism is the only reason that he hasn't won the Nobel Prize for Physics.

Panel 5: SARAH PERELMAN (28 yo female) is mid-stride.

Caption 1: MK Sarah Perelman, Minister of Foreign Affairs: Arguably the 3rd most important politician in Israel, represents the "revisionist zionism", economically liberal YISRAEL BEITENU Party.

Caption 2: Rumored to be dating Israeli soccer star Eyal Berkovich.

Panel 6: YONATAN ISAACHAROFF (58 yo) determinedly runs mid-stride.

Caption 1: MK Yonatan Isaacharoff, Minister of Defense: Oversees most of the Israeli military, 2nd most important politician in Israel, represents the center-left, social democracy LABOR Party.

Caption 2: Secretly grooming his inept son for the position.

PAGE 8, 6 PANELS:

Panel 1. The Prime Minister stands and holds a remote control, pointed toward a television that is playing footage of the earlier interview (page 5). The other six members of the Forum are seated. Here is the arrangement; The PM is between our 9 and 10 o'clock;, Yonatan is at 11; Eliyahu is at 12; Benny is between 1 or 2; Sarah is at 3; Uri between 4 and 5. Haim is at 6 (Eliyahu and Haim face each other).

Caption 1: Prime Minister Moshe Goren, LIKUD.

Caption 2: Holds the remote and the control.

ELI (from tv)

We are the ten exiled tribes of Israel, which is our destination.

REPORTER (from tv)

You are walking to Israel?

ELI (FROM TV)

Yes.

REPORTER (FROM TV)

Why?

Panel 2. Just Eli.

ELI

(smiling widely)

Because, young lady, we want our land back.

Panel 3.

The television has been turned off, and the Prime Minister is now seated. The discussion begins.

PRIME MINISTER MOSHE GOREN

Ladies first.*

MK SARAH PERELMAN

The phones are ringing off the hook from all of the usual suspects. They are threatening full-scale war if we displace even a single Arab on behalf of this group.

PRIME MINISTER MOSHE GOREN

How long do we have until they reach our borders?

Caption: * Translated from the modern Hebrew.

Panel 4. MK Yonatan Isaacharoff watches skeptically as his son, MK Benny Isaacharoff fields the question.

MK BENNY ISAACHAROFF

They appeared near Al-Hasakah, and from their current trajectory, should run squarely into Mount Hermon in two hours.

PRIME MINISTER MOSHE GOREN

And they're just going to climb Mount Hermon? With their women and children?

MK BENNY ISAACHAROFF

Some of them have displayed abilities more fantastic than the rest, but yes, even their weakest is stronger than our strongest. They will climb.

Panel 5. Yonatan's face reveals a hint of a grin, as the dialogue between the PM and Benny continues. The focus is on Yonatan.

PRIME MINISTER MOSHE GOREN

Will the Lebanese or the Syrians buy us some time on their sides of the mountain?

MK BENNY ISAACHAROFF

The travelers should run into more Syrian soldiers, as well as the Lebanese on the north side of the mountain, but that won't slow them. They probably won't even break stride...

Panel 6. Just Benny.

MK BENNY ISAACHAROFF

These men... each one is an army.

PAGE 9, 5 PANELS:

Panel 1. The PM poses a question to Yonatan.

PRIME MINISTER MOSHE GOREN

Do you agree with that assessment, Yonatan?

Panel 2. Close-up of Yonatan, whose reluctance to agree with his son is evident.

MK YONATAN ISAACHAROFF

...Yes.

Panel 3. Just the PM.

PRIME MINISTER MOSHE GOREN

(incredulously)

These travelers claim to be the lost tribes... I find this difficult to believe, to say the least...

Panel 4. The PM poses a query to Eliyahu.

PRIME MINISTER MOSHE GOREN

Forgive my ignorance, Eliyahu, but what is the story here?

MK ELIYAHU BEN-YOSEF

That is a very good question, Your Excellency...

Panel 5. Aerial shot: We return to the traveling tribes. It is approximately two hours before dawn. There are no soldiers in the area, but there are many media present, especially near the TRIBES of EPHRAIM and MENASHE (Adonises in beauty and attire; slight bronze glow; their uniforms are similar but each tribe wears their own patch, see Guide), which are situated at the top right (back of the procession). TRIBE DAN is at the top left (and also in the line of the cameras that are on Tribes Ephraim and Menashe). Flashbulbs are going off. Everyone is moving at a brisk pace. The formation of the tribes, due to the lack of incoming fire, has shifted to a more relaxed state. The women and children are mostly near the the men of their tribe, and there is some inter-tribal mingling.

Caption: 2 miles southwest of the Tadmur ruins, Syria.

PAGE 10, 4 PANELS:

Panel 1:

Toward the top of the screen (but leaving room on top for captions), Shlomo walks with ZEVULUN (70 y.o. in appearance, leader of Tribe Zevulun). Shlomo is to our left; Zevulun is to our right; they are walking toward the bottom of of the panel. They appear to be conversing in a friendly manner.

Caption 1 (pointing to Shlomo): Shlomo of Tribe Yisachar: still Chief Rabbi and leader of the Tribes.

Caption 2 (pointing to Zevulun): Zevulun: Leader of Tribe Zevulun and father of Eli, who is married to Shlomo's daughter Tziporah.

10 feet ahead of Shlomo and Zevulun (about an inch below Shlomo and Zevulun on the panel), walk Eli (our right) and Shaul (our left).

Caption 3 (pointing to Shaul): Shaul: Son of the Chief Rabbi.

Caption 4 (pointing to Eli): Eli: Son of Zevulun, son-in-law and arguably top student of the Chief Rabbi.

SHAUL

What was that earlier?

ELI

What?

SHAUL

With the reporter...

Panel 2: Shaul indicates displeasure with Eli.

SHAUL

I could have spoken for my father.

ELI

Then why didn't you?

SHAUL

Because you jumped in, and this wasn't the first time...

Panel 3. Shaul poses a serious question to Eli, who remains stoic.

SHAUL

Have you been attempting to circumvent me and position yourself to become the next Chief Rabbi?

Panel 4. DAN (60 yo in appearance) and his son YITZCHAK (14 y.o. in appearance) of Tribe Dan walk and talk to each other while walking amongst their fellow tribesmen (Dan is a small tribe, see Guide). SHIRA (55 yo in appearance) walks with her daughter DEVORAH (13 yo in appearance) toward the back of the tribe.

Caption 1: The Tribe of Dan: Serpent-like cunning, advanced chameleons, espionage experts.

Caption 2 (pointing to Dan): Dan, leader of the tribe.

Caption 3 (pointing to Yitzchak): His son Yitzchak.

DAN

No, son. This changes nothing. You will marry Devorah as soon as possible.

PAGE 11, 6 PANELS:

Just Dan and Yitchak in 6 similar panels, indicative of a comedic punchline in the final panel.

Panel 1.

YITZCHAK

But father, I'm not in love with her.

DAN

You speak of love, Yitzchak, when our very tribe is at stake? The particular ability of our tribe is only passed down to full-blooded Dan. You understand this, correct?

YITZCHAK

Yes, father.

Panel 2.

DAN

And you understand that you are the only male member of our small tribe that is young enough to reproduce, correct?

YITZCHAK

Yes, father.

Panel 3.

DAN

And you also understand that Devorah is the only female member of our small tribe that is young enough to reproduce, correct?

YITZCHAK

sigh...Yes, father.

Panel 4.

DAN

But do you comprehend just how important our abilities will be for what we must accomplish?

YITZCHAK

I... I think so, father.

Panel 5.

Dan watches as Yitzchak contemplates the query.

DAN

So, then you understand why you must marry Devorah?

Panel 6.

Yitzchak pleads, prompting Dan to exhale in exasperation.

YITZCHAK

But I don't love Devorah!

PAGE 12, 4 PANELS:

Panel 1. Shira and Devorah walk together toward the back of tribe Dan.

Caption: Shira and her daughter Devorah, Tribe Dan:

DEVORAH

No, mother, you just don't get it.

Panel 2: Just Shira and Devorah.

SHIRA

What don't I get, Devorah. Tell me what I don't get.

DEVORAH

Yitzchak doesn't want me. He wants Leah of Tribe Reuven.

SHIRA

Tribe Reuven! Please...

Panel 3: TRIBE REUVEN, which includes a pretty girl who appears as if 12 yo, walk together. The men of the tribe don't wear any head coverings, and the the women dress more provocatively (to a degree) than those of the other tribes.

Caption 1 (toward top-left): Tribe Reuven: Irreligious separatists, the only tribe without a specific group function.

Caption 2 (toward bottom-right, Shira): "There is no way that Yitzchak's father will permit him to wed anyone from REUVEN. Feh!"

Caption 3 (bottom-right, Devorah): "But mother..."

Panel 4:

A teary-eyed Devorah poses a question to her mom Shira, who indicated empathy.

DEVORAH

Why doesn't he want me?

PAGE 13, 3 PANELS:

Panel 1. Tribe Dan (our left) and Tribes Ephraim and Menashe (our right) are in the line of the paparazzi (our far-right).

Caption 1 (near Tribe Dan): Much to the surprise of the paparazzi, Tribe Dan won't appear in any of their videos or photos.

Caption 2 (near Tribes Ephraim and Menashe): Which can't be said of the paparazzi's primary focus.

Panel 2. The paparazzi click away and film the radiant Adonises that are Tribes Ephraim and Menashe.

Caption 1: Tribes Ephraim and Menashe, the two tribes that emanated from Joseph: Beautiful, lucky.

Caption 2: These two tribes comprise an insular, pocket community of their own, at least partly from necessity.

Caption 3: The other tribes view Ephraim and Menashe as arrogant and stuck up...

Panel 3: The beautiful members of Ephraim and Menashe smile and wave at the paparazzi.

Caption 1 (top-left):...but maybe they're just a little jealous?

Caption 2 (bottom-right, MK Eliyahu Ben-Yosef): "After we were destroyed by ancient Assyria..."

PAGE 14, 4 PANELS:

Panel 1: Eliyahu tells the tale to the other MK's.

MK ELIYAHU BEN-YOSEF

...and we're going back close to three thousand years, mind you...

MK ELIYAHU BEN-YOSEF (CONT'D)

Anyway, the nine tribes of the Northern Kingdom and the tribe of Shimon were exiled.

MK ELIYAHU BEN-YOSEF (CONT'D)

But to where? That is the question.

Panel 2. Just Eliyahu.

MK ELIYAHU BEN-YOSEF

These Ten Lost Tribes disappeared from historical accounts.

MK ELIYAHU BEN-YOSEF (CONT'D)

But they had to go somewhere, didn't they?

Panel 3:

MK Haim Levy indicates annoyance/displeasure, as Eliyahu continues.

MK ELIYAHU BEN-YOSEF

Legend tells us of a raging river, the Sambation.

MK ELIYAHU BEN-YOSEF

One opinion identifies the Sambation as the Guzana River, which is coincidentally located right near where this group appeared in Al-Hasakah.

Panel 4: Haim rolls his eyes.

PAGE 15, 5 PANELS:

Panel 1: The P.M. appears to be mildly intrigued, as Eliyahu continues.

MK ELIYAHU BEN-YOSEF

The Sambation is a furious, dangerous river for six days a week. Impossible to cross.

MK ELIYAHU BEN-YOSEF

But it rests on the Sabbath, which is the only day of the week on which religious Jews are forbidden to travel in certain manners.

Panel 2. Just Eliyahu.

MK ELIYAHU BEN-YOSEF

Would the wicked kings of Assyria, Tiglath-Pileser the 3rd and Sargon the 2nd, may their names and memory be blotted out...

Panel 3. Haim indicates annoyance.

Panel 4. Just Eliyahu.

MK ELIYAHU BEN-YOSEF

Would they have exiled these very religious tribes to the far side of the Sambation, perhaps forcibly on the Sabbath, then the tribes may never have been able to return.

MK ELIYAHU BEN-YOSEF

And we can only speculate as to what was on the other side of the Sambation. It's entirely possible that-

Panel 5. Wide shot, as Haim begins to lose it.

MK HAIM LEVY

Enough! Enough of these fables already!

PAGE 16, 6 PANELS:

Panel 1. Eliyahu indicates that he's taken offense to Haim's outburst. Haim, who is now standing, flies off the handle. Everyone else indicates varying levels of surprise at Haim's outburst.

MK ELIYAHU BEN-YOSEF

If you'd just allow me to-

MK HAIM LEVY

NO! Just shut up already, Rabbi!

Panel 2. Just Haim.

MK HAIM LEVY

I have had it with-

Panel 3. Haim rubs his temples, as if he has a migraine.

Panel 4. Haim, now seated, his head tilted downward, continues rubbing his temples.

MK HAIM LEVY

(muttering)

I don't want to be here.

Panel 5.

Haim and Eliyahu, both seated, continue their debate.

MK HAIM LEVY

Science, Rabbi. We live in the real world, yes?

MK ELIYAHU BEN-YOSEF

How does your science explain their abilities, which just happen to mirror the prophecies and the blessings bestowed upon each tribe by their-

MK HAIM LEVY

It's an act, Rabbi! Their abilities are scientific in nature, and they're acting as if they are the tribes.

Panel 6. Close-up of an angry Haim.

MK HAIM LEVY

It's a show for the benefit of lemmings such as yourself!

PAGE 17, 5 PANELS:

Panel 1.

MK ELIYAHU BEN-YOSEF

So, you have no idea how they got these wondrous abilities, and you leave open every possible explanation, except the one that is tangentially rooted in religion!

MK HAIM LEVY

Yes, Rabbi, it's called being-

MK YONATAN ISAACHAROFF

ENOUGH!

Panel 2.

An irate Yonatan pounds his fist on the table.

MK YONATAN ISAACHAROFF

ENOUGH ALREADY!

Panel 3.

Everyone else, especially Benny, indicates shock at Yonatan's outburst.

Panel 4.

Just Yonatan.

MK YONATAN ISAACHAROFF

It doesn't matter! It doesn't matter if they are who they say!

MK YONATAN ISAACHAROFF

I don't believe that these warriors are acting, and I don't know if they are ancient tribesmen, but it doesn't matter!

Panel 5.

The PM questions Yonatan's assessment.

PRIME MINISTER MOSHE GOREN

(incredulously)

It doesn't?

MK YONATAN ISAACHAROFF

Your Excellency, if you will indulge me for a moment, I will explain...

Panel 1: Mount Hermon, establishing shot.

Caption 1: Mount Hermon.

Caption 2: Its summit, 2,814 meters above sea level, lies on the border between Lebanon and Syria.

Caption 3: Parts of its southern slopes are either owned or occupied by Israel, depending upon whom you ask.

Caption 4 (bottom-right, Yonatan): "These men... they are the most powerful in the world."

Panel 2:

Early rays of sunlight are beaming over the horizon, as Syrian and Lebanese military, on either side of the tribes' path, prepare to fire upon the approaching tribes (who are now in battle formation, as depicted on pages 2-3).

Caption 1 (Yonatan): "They claim to be our people. They want to be a part of Israel."

Caption 2 (Yonatan): "They want to settle on the lands which they believe were allotted to them."

Panel 3.

The fight begins. The tribes display all of their relevant powers, as the Syrian and Lebanese forces spray bullets. The bullets bounce of off Tribe Gad. Tribesmen other than those of Gad show signs of minor wounds and bleeding, but none fall.

Caption 1 (Yonatan): "For what purpose?"

Caption 2 (Yonatan): "To destroy it?"

Caption 3 (Yonatan): "No, certainly not."

PAGE 19, 4 PANELS:

The Tribes plow through the Syrian and Lebanese soldiers. Some of the Tribesmen other than those of Gad show more signs of minor wounds and bleeding, but none fall.

Panel 1. Aerial shot: 1/4 of the Syrians and Lebanese have been fell, with no Tribes casualties.

Caption 1 (Yonatan): "The biggest gift in the history of mankind has dropped squarely in our lap, and we argue over whether or not a legend is true?"

Caption 2 (Yonatan): "It doesn't matter!"

Panel 2. Aerial shot, but tighter on the members of Gad deflecting bullets: 1/2 of the Syrians and Lebanese have been fell, with no Tribes casualties.

Caption (Yonatan): "They are warriors. They have soldiers that can deflect bullets!"

Panel 3. Aerial shot, but tighter on the Tribe of Asher using parts of the mountain itself as a weapon: 3/4 of the Syrians and Lebanese have been fell, with no Tribes casualties.

Caption (Yonatan): "They can control the soil... Don't you all understand what that will mean for us?"

Panel 4. Aerial shot: All of the Syrians and Lebanese have been fell, with no Tribes casualties.

Caption (Yonatan): "And who knows what other abilities they may have! And they want to be a part of our country!"

Panel 2: Seen from over the shoulders of the soldiers in the middle of the pack (the few dozen soldiers who are in front of this point of reference are in the shot): The Tribes approach from the distance.

Caption (Yonatan): "Here is our one chance to shed those shackles."

Panel 3: The tribes are 40 feet from the front line of soldiers, when Moshe raises his hand, open-palmed, ordering the Tribes to halt.

Caption (Yonatan): "Regardless of if they are whom they believe themselves to be, there is only one play here, Your Excellency..."
