I was furious. Shamefully, I will admit the hole in the wooden door that led to the servant stairs was mine. I needed out, I needed air. I needed answers. I climbed the stairs, peeking into rooms until I found one that resembled a princess' sitting room. I crashed on the couch, planning on waiting until Isabelle came up. Propriety, forget it.
It took me a few minutes to get impatient and start looking around the room. I flipped through a book, looked through her jewelry box, trying to find something that gave me some clue to the girl in the ballroom. That's when I saw the window to the balcony was wide open. Moving towards it to get a better look, I saw the door to her bedroom was also wide open, and there was a figure lying in the bed. I drew my sword, finally glad it was worth something more than decoration. "Hello?"
When I inched closer, I saw Isabelle's ball gown, and I sheathed my sword again, running to her side. "Isabelle? Isabelle, wake up!" I touched her cheek. Her skin was ice cold, her pulse faint, and she wasn't breathing. Her lips were starting to turn blue, too, which made me panic.
I'm going to break a rule right now and talk straight to you. You know that moment your mind goes blank and you don't know what to do, so you end up doing the first thing that comes to your mind, no matter how stupid? Well…
I panicked. And the first thing that came to my head after that blank was that stupid fairytale my sister loved, where the prince wakes up the girl with a kiss. So, without any thinking, I leaned over and kissed her softly.
Two seconds later, I was thrown across the room, rose vines springing up from the floorboards and pinning me to the wall. She gasped and sat up, blinking as she stared at me. "What the heck just happened?"
"Je ne sais pas! Zut alors, Isabelle!" I struggled with the vines. "Do you plan on letting me down?!"
I regretted asking almost immediately. Isabelle stared, looking like she was about to cry. "I don't know how."
I felt sorry, so I tried to console her from my spot as a wall decoration. "Shhhhhh, hush. It'll be fine, just… go find Edward."
There was a crash outside the door as Edward swept into the room. Screaming could be heard from the hallway. "Quick, we've got to move," he said, not looking the least bit surprised by what he saw. "The person who tried to impersonate Isabelle I think just turned to plan B. The castle is being raided."
