My phone rang. "Yes?"

"Is this Lira Hottel?"

"We were told to contact you. Evan Scott is in our Emergency Room." I gasped and my heart beat faster.

"Is he ok?"

"I'm sorry but I can't say more over the phone."

"Ok, I'll be there in two minutes." As soon as I got there I ran straight to the E.R. desk. "What happened?"

"He was in a car crash, he's in critical care. Lira I'm sorry but it doesn't look good." The nurse at the desk was one I'd known since I was little. I started crying and she came around the desk. "I'm not supposed to let non family members in to see him but come on." She led me to his room, there were so many tubes and machines. After she got me there she left. And I walked to his bed and looked at his prone figure. I grabbed his hand and started crying.

You can't leave us." I whispered through my tears. "You can't leave us. You promised you'd never leave me."

What Now

"Lira come on, I know you miss him but it's been three months. You can't ignore everyone forever." She raised her head to look at me.

"There are only two people in the world I could talk to. One of them is dead and the other doesn't know or care what's going on."

"Who, of your friends, doesn't know or care what's happened to you?" She just looked at me and shook her head. She was always hiding in the dark, wearing baggy clothes, and the sweatshirt of his that he had given her. I could not figure out who she could be talking about, I was wracking my brains, then I had an idea. It wouldn't hurt to call him.

"Hi Alex, it's Amy. Look I know you don't really like me but I have a favor to ask of you."

"What is it?"

"You heard about the crash didn't you?"

"No, what crash?"

"The crash in Lakeville, where Evan was killed."

"Evan. Oh isn't that Lira's boyfriend?"

"Yes he was. And he was killed. And she won't talk to anyone. She said there were only two people in this world she could talk to, she said one was dead and the other didn't know or care. I think the other might be you."

"Why would it be me? I haven't talked to her for four months."

"Yes but three of those four she hasn't spoken more than two sentences to anyone."

"I don't believe it's me."

"Who else could it be? You could at least try talking to her."

"I don't know, but it's not me. Goodbye Amy."

It's been another month and she still hasn't talked to anyone. It's fair time and she's not showing anything, and she's hiding.

"Lira is that you?" She looked lonely sitting on the bench by herself, and she was wearing pants and a sweatshirt even though it was 84 degrees out.

"Hey Alex."

"Aren't you supposed to be at the horse show?"

"I'm not showing this year."

"Why not?"

"I just….didn't feel like it."

"How are you doing?"

"I'm….okay." I sat down next to her.

"Are you really okay? Or are you just saying that?" She smiled sadly at me and gave a sad excuse for a laugh.

"You always could tell."

"Yes well, you've never been good at hiding it."

"You're the only one who could ever see it." I looked at her more closely, there was something….wrong.

"What's wrong Lira? And don't just say it's because of Even because I know that's not true." She looked me in the eye. She looked broken and hesitant. "Come on Lira, you can tell me anything."

"I haven't…. haven't told anyone. I'm….Alex I'm pregnant." She started crying. "I'm pregnant and he's gone Alex." I wrapped her in my arms.

"I'm here for you Lira." Slowly she stopped crying and looked up at me.

"What am I going to do Alex?"

"I don't know Lira, but come on lets go to my camper, people are staring hun." We got to camper, I got her some water, and I sat down next to her. "Am I the only one that knows? Haven't you told your parents?"

"No. I haven't told anyone. You're the only one I've talked to much for the last four months."

"I don't know how I can tell them. What will they think of me? I'm only 18."

"Lira, they're going to notice eventually. I'm surprised they haven't yet." I could see it now that I knew, and now that she had taken her sweatshirt off.

"I know but….I don't know what to say to them. What am I going to do? How can I go to school or have a life? I have no one to help me. He's supposed to be here with me. He promised me he'd never leave me." She had started crying again.

"I'm here Lira, and I will help you. And you have friends who will help you, and family." I said holding her close again.

"Mom, Dad, I have something to tell you." I was very glad that Alex was here with me, I'd never be able to do this without him. They looked at me like they couldn't believe I was actually talking to them. "I'm pregnant. About 5 months along. It's Evan's." I was surprised at their reactions. My mom got up and hugged me. She told me she had wondered but not wanted to say anything since I was upset enough. She said we could get through it. And Alex just stood by my side and smiled, as if saying I told you so. Four months later I had a baby girl. I named her Christine Marie. She was named after three different people. His older sister and one of my best friends who had gotten us together were both a form of Christine and Marie is my mom's middle name. I brought her to meet his dad and sister. I had to explain everything that had happened since I hadn't talked to them at all since the accident. His dad picked her up, announced that she had his eyes, and started crying as he rocked her. And Alex was there for me through it all, becoming my closest friend, and then something more. Now two years later we were at his house sitting in his room and Chrisi was at my parents' house. I was listening to him play guitar.

"Lira, I have something to ask you."

"Yes?" He kneeled down and pulled out a box.

"Will you marry me Lira?" I was shocked.

"Yes. Of course I will." He put the ring on my finger and I hugged him close.

"Also, if it's ok with you, when we get married I'd like to adopt Chrisi."

"You want a daughter that's not yours?"

"Of course I do. And just because she's not mine genetically doesn't mean she can't be my daughter."

"Of course you can adopt her. I love you Alex."

"I love you too Lira."

"I Like my new name, and hers, Lira Cecelia Fenwick and Christine Marie Scott-Fenwick."

"I like them too." He smiled and pulled me to him.
