Chapter 2: The Proposal

It was a Monday night so it wasn't usually busy at the diner where Alexa worked. It was closing time and everybody was cleaning up. Everybody was doing their share but Alexa had finished hers.

"You done?" asked Tina. Tina also worked at the Diner but she went to a different school. She had and Asian look with tiny eyes and pallid skin.

"Yeah." replied Alexa unfastening her apron.

As she took off her apron, she noticed she wasn't wearing her necklace. With a worried look on her face, Alexa went to get her bag. She fumbled through the contents of it and heaved a deep sigh.

Tina watched Alexa scrambling the contents of her bag.

"What's wrong?" asked Tina with concern.

"Cant seem to find my necklace." Alexa replied digging her hands through the pocket of her jeans.

Tina was going to answer when Alexa asked her another question. "Hey, when I got here I was still wearing it, wasn't I?"

"Hmmm.." said Tina and paused to think. "When you clocked in I didn't see any necklace June."

Alexa's face was painted with worry. She had lost her necklace; it wasn't only a necklace but a memento, a remembrance.

Seeing the serious worry on her friend's face Tina said with reassurance "Don't worry I'm sure you just dropped it on your way here."

With hose words uttered, Alexa's face lit up like she had a brilliant idea.

So she retraced her steps before going back home.

Alexa laid her head face down in the cafeteria table. She sighed deeply. Energy was draining from her. Juggling school and work was eating her. Then you just have to add the mortgage of the house. And to top it all off she lost her keepsake from her parents.

A pat came to her back.

"Hey June." Came Ellie's high pitched voice.

Alexa lifted her head a bit to see her best friend but continued to lie at the table.

"What's wrong?" Ellie queried with concern audible in her voice.

"Lost my necklace." Came Alexa's muffled reply.

ALexa nodded and adjusted her glasses.

Ellie lifted Alexa's head and tucked the stray ebony strands in her ears.

"Come on June. It's only a necklace."

"It's not just a necklace. It was their last gift to me and I lost it." Alexa exclaimed.

'I'm sorry to hear that June. I'm sure you'll find it."

Ellie continued to stare at her best friend.

"What's wrong with her?" asked Josh as he put his tray in the table.

"She lost her necklace." Replied Ellie.

"Have you tried retracing your steps?" asked Josh.

"Yes. I even looked for it at home." Said Alexa.

"How about at the diner?" asked Ellie.

Alexa shook her haed. "Tina said when I came there I wasn't wearing it anymore."

"Maybe you dropped it here at school." Suggested Ellie.

June perked her head like she had at least an ounce of hope finding her necklace.

"Don't worry. We'll help you look for it." Josh offered and clutched Alexa's right hand.

Now if they weren't best friends, Alexa would think Josh is flirting with her. But since they were she knew it was his way of comforting. She knew that Josh was just naturally sweet.

"Right El?" asked Josh.

"Oh. Of course." Replied Ellie cheerfully.

"I'll check the lost and found later. Maybe it's there." Josh said with a smile displaying his perfect white teeth.

"Thanks." replied Alexa with a toothless grin.

"Come on June. Get up. Let's get you fixed up." Said Eliie.

Alexa's brows furrowed. "What's wrong with my face?"

"Well your lip gloss has smeared and you look oily." Retorted Ellie. "Let's put some make up on you." Continued Ellie with a mischievous grin in her face.

Alexa didn't wear any make up except maybe for lip gloss. She didn't know how to do it and she was lazy to learn.

"You know I don't wear make up." Alexa defended.

"Fine." Ellie said defeated. "Then just some powder and lip gloss."

Ellie lifted Alexa and both girls went to the bathroom.

The day had been long. June wasn't in the mood to go to school today and learn. her eyes were still heavy from the lack of sleep last night trying to find her necklace.

'Why did I have to lose it anyway? I'm such a klutz. I should have secured it before I left school.' June scolded herself

She sighed deeply.

But then she remembered Ellie and Josh telling her not to worry, that maybe she'll find it. Maybe they're right and she was blowing this thing out of proportion. Yeah, maybe she need to relax a little bit.

Since June had a free period today, she thought of going to the library. As she entered the familiar smell of books greeted her. Yes it was comforting. Being bookwork the library was her sanctuary, a place to escape. And the books, they were like magical portals that transported her to another place, away from reality for a while. Yes, she such a geek.

June traced the spines of the books as she passed each shelf. Their texture gave this comforting familiarity. She stopped at the classics section and reached out for one book and opened it. The smell of the old paper teased her nose and she began reading.

A sudden tap came to her shoulder and she let out a little yelp. June turned around to see who it was.

Dylan Foxx.

She blinked several times trying to register if this was real or not. Maybe her eyeglasses were blurry.

"Hey." He greeted nonchalantly and put his hands in his pockets.

So June agreed to what Ellie said. He really was cute -- the way his dark hair partially covered forehead and his penetrating jade green eyes.

"Didn't mean to scare you." He added suddenly. When he spoke June could only look at his lips.

And she continued to stare at him dumbfounded holding a book.

June wondered why he was talking to her. She didn't even know if he knew her.

"June, you alright?" he asked.

Well that answered June's question. He knows her all right.

"Yeah. " she answered as confident as she could. "What do you want?" June asked a bit too defensive. She really suck talking to boys.

"I just want to.." he trailed.

June was puzzled to what he wanted.

She waited for him to finish.

"Hey there's dirt on your face." He said and touched her cheek to get the dirt.

"Oh thanks." she quickly put my hand on my cheek touching where he touched.

June fought hard to tell her brain not to blush. It was the first time a boy touched her cheek.

"Actually there wasn't any dirt on you face, I just wanted to touch you." He explained and smirked.

"Funny. Haha." she retorted.

Because June was inexperienced with boys, she wasn't quite sure whether he was flirting with her or he was being friendly. She thought of asking her Ellie later.

Then Dylan smirked smugly.

"You know what's funny? You actually think I was flirting with you. Haha." He said condescendingly. Then he laughed.

June was surprised at that development. It took her a while to register his rudeness and then she glared at him.

Well, that collapsed her fantasy.

"And I thought you were a nice guy. Jerk." she said with mockery in my tone.

He smirked again and June wanted to wipe the smile off his face.

"So are you just here to tease me?" she asked annoyed and turned her back on him and continued flipping the book.

"While that sounds fun, I have other reasons why I'm here." He explained.

June didn't respond and waited for him to continue.

"I want you to be my girlfriend." He said.

She blinked in surprise and turned to face him. Did she hear that correctly? Did he just ask her to be his girlfriend while moments ago he made fun of her?

"What kind of sick joke are you playing ?" she asked angrily. June didn't like to be toyed with.

"Look. Hear me out." He said his voice serious. "I want you to be my pretend girlfriend." he continued putting emphasis on the pretend.

"No." She said firmly. "I won't do it."

"Come on." He said.

"No." I said firmly.

"Why not?" he asked inching closer to me.

"Because I don't want to." June replied nonchalantly.

"Look, I really like this girl. And she…" he trailed off.

"She what?"

"She has a boyfriend." He finished.

"Well I think that's game over for you." she said coldly.

He frowned. "No its not. If she thinks I have a girl friend, maybe she'll get jealous and you know realize her feelings for me." He explained.

June laughed. "That's the most ridiculous plan I've ever heard." she said to him.

He stared at her with his green eyes turning hard.

"There's no way I would do it." she said and walked to the tables and sat.

Dylan followed after her

"Come on. Please." He said.

June took note that he even said please.

"No. I will not agree to that plan of yours." she said.

"I'll make you agree." He said with seriousness in his tone like he was threatening her.

"Well I'd like to see you try." she replied mockingly giving him a glare.

Then Tracy Stutton walked inside the library with her minions. Yes, they were the cheerleaders. They called out after Dylan.

Dylan rose from his seat.

Then he said "I'll see to that." Dylan walked out of the library and followed Tracy.

Make me happy and give me a review.
